Executive Committee Elections - Candidate Information Sheet 2018 President Elect Lauren Smith BLA, ASLA I started my career by earning a Landscape Architecture degree from Purdue University in my home state of Indiana. During my education, I completed a year-long internship in the Phoenix-metro area which lead me to relocate to Phoenix after completing my degree in May of I spent the first eight years of my professional career working in the valley, gaining experience on a variety of projects within the public and private realm. After nearly eight years, I sought out a change and relocated to Salt Lake City and began my career with GSBS Architects. My passion lies in creating spaces for communities that are used on a daily basis. I am looking forward to taking advantage of all the natural beauty Utah has to offer. During my free time, you can find me exploring all of what Salt Lake City has to offer or one of the numerous National Parks or Monuments. Although I m new to Utah, I am very excited about being involved in the local chapter of ASLA. I have been impressed with the activity of this chapter and immediately wanted to become a part of the leadership team. My interest in chapter involvement mostly spurs from wanting to be an integral part of a community made up of landscape architects that pushes the professional to learn more about our industry and stay current with trends. The two main goals I would strive for as an Executive Committee Member would be Collaboration and Public Engagement. Collaboration: Being a landscape architect requires great collaboration skills. The ability to collaborate successfully and effectively can be one of our best to a team. If I am selected to the Executive Committee, I hope to bring that collaboration to Utah ASLA s events and expand the opportunity to have Utah ASLA collaborate with other industry local chapters (i.e., AIA, ULI, etc.) Public Engagement: Many landscape architects have experience conducting and/or participating public engagement meetings for their projects. However, in this instance I m referring to more of a public education initiative. ASLA has been working hard towards public awareness of what Landscape Architecture is and how we shape the spaces they experience on a daily basis. With many states having licensure threatened and many young people not knowing what landscape architecture is, I view this as a top priority for ASLA and our industry s future.
Michael Budge, Principal, LOCI, LLC, ALSA Michael Budge is founder and Principal of Loci. Loci opened in early 2014 and is dedicated to creating healthy, livable cities and towns through the use of a rigorous and methodological design and planning process. Michael believes that Landscape Architecture is greatly concerned with the quality of life, and this concern must find form through the nature of the firms work. Michael has over ten years of professional experience which has given him valuable experience and expertise in complex design processes. Michael has a passion for attention to details, a strong design sensibility and a desire to use that ability to make memorable and meaningful places. He has had first-hand experience in urban design; the design of resorts, institutions, parks and recreational openspace; neighborhood and community planning; mixed-use development. These projects have allowed him to work through many different phases of design from conceptual master planning and site analysis through construction documentation and observation, all of which have taught him what it takes to see a project from initial ideas through implementation and how to work at a range of scales simultaneously. Trustee Tina Gillman BLA, ALSA After 17 years practicing landscape architecture, I believe in the power of the landscape architecture profession to create places that are beautiful, joyful, and elegant while providing for environmental, financial, social and economic needs. I also believe in the untapped potential of our ASLA chapter to grow the profession and support our chapter members. As chapter president, I am most proud of the reorganization of the chapter executive committee positions two years ago. Renaming positions and assigning those positions responsibilities that correspond with ASLA s mission - advocacy, communication, education, and fellowship -- will allow the chapter ro reach its potential. Already this organization has allowed individuals holding those positions to create public relations campaigns, establish relationships with legislators, and begin to broaden our education offerings. As chapter president I had an opportunity to gain a broader view of the profession and realize an understanding of how what we do in our corner of the landscape architecture world is one piece of a much larger picture. An opportunity to fill in as proxy for our chapter trustee at a national board of trustees meeting further broadened my perspective of the efforts and accomplishments currently underway by ASLA s trustees. I want to represent our chapter in these efforts and communicate and share with our chapter members these accomplishments and resources. In addition, I hold a BLA from Utah State University and an MS from the University of Utah. I am a licensed landscape architect in Utah and have worked the past 12 years at CRSA.
Jay Bollwinkel BLA, ASLA, ICP Jay received his Associate of Arts and Sciences from Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho) and his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning from Utah State University in He is a charter member and serves as Co-Chair on the USU LAEP Advancement Board. He also serves in his community on the Murray City Center District Design Review Committee and as secretary of the Exchange Club of Murray. He is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the American Institute of Certified Planners and is LEED Certified Professional in Neighborhood Development. Jay is a licensed landscape architect in six states. Jay has served as an officer in ASLA starting as the Treasurer of the San Joaquin Chapter in California Jay helped reignite the Utah ASLA chapter after it had been dormant for a few years in He served as chapter treasurer and converted the check register into Quicken for more accurate and easy financial transparency. He also managed the memorial fund that showed a substantial increase under his care. In 2001 Jay ran and successfully became UASLA Chapter President Elect. As president he successfully lead the chapter fighting for maintaining licensure in the State of Utah and attending leadership meetings in Washington DC meeting with Utah State s Congressional Offices. As past president Jay orchestrating a successful Utah ASLA Annual Meeting in Ogden with the first trade show to offset chapter costs.as the President of MGB+A Jay sponsors all staff members to be ASLA members and has encouraged them to serve on the Utah ASLA Executive Committee with three MGB+A staff successfully serving on the committee. Vice President of Membership JoEllen Grandy, MLA, ASLA JoEllen graduated with a Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon, 2012 and a Bachelors of Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning and a minor in Ornamental Horticulture from Utah State University, She is employed with Layton City Parks & Recreation Department as their Parks Planner. She is responsible for the design of city parks, trails and open space.her most recent project completed is a replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall which was a great honor for her. She enjoys the opportunity to work with so many professionals and to serve a community. JoEllen has enjoyed the opportunity to serve as Secretary for ExCom for the past two years and would love the opportunity to serve again on the board this time in the position of VP Membership & Member Services. She enjoys meeting people and wants to help our ASLA members succeed and grow.
Tad Hansen, PLA, ASLA Tad grew up in the cool, little town of Weiser (Wee-zer), Idaho back when the band Weezer was pretty popular. Since then Tad has earned a BS degree in Agronomy from BYU in 2001 and a BA degree in LAEP from Utah State in During those years he also worked in the landscape field as an installer and laborer, operator and foreman. He currently works at Landform Design Group as a project manager and designer. At LFDG He has enjoyed working on many types and scales of projects, requiring him to wear many hats to complete and giving him experience working with a wide range of personalities, disciplines and municipalities. Attention to detail and communication is a big part of what he does on a day to day basis. Tad is excited for the opportunity to be a part of our Executive Committee here in Utah! Tad has had a great time as an ASLA member and has met and connected with a lot of new people within our Utah chapter since joining last year. As a fairly new member, he has been able to quickly learn and appreciate the value of being a member of ASLA and would love the chance to help other prospective members realize the importance and worth that an ASLA membership can bring to their career like it has his. As Vice President of Membership Tad hopes to work closely with the committee in furthering our efforts to not only help potential ASLA members understand the value of membership but also increase awareness in the community to the value that our profession provides. Being a member of the committee would also give him a chance to be more involved with the association, help it grow and thrive, and have a lot of fun in the process. Vice President of Visibility and Public Affairs Brett Hoffer ASLA When writing a bio about Brett, it s hard to figure out how he ended up in Landscape Architecture. From sports and breakdancing to playing the saxophone and entering science fairs, he has a background as diverse as a wall street investment portfolio. Yet none of these things seemed to lead him to Landscape Architecture, and yet all of these things influence how he designs projects from residential homes to the planning of cities and private developments. Design is most important to Brett and was a main focus while at Utah State University. While at school, he saw the benefit of ASLA and convinced a record number of students to join the student chapter as well as coordinated the matching of students with professional mentors. In addition he served on the Create 2020 student board, of which he was able to spark the remodel of the current studios at USU. He was also keen on developing his own professional network, leading to an internship every summer while at
school and eventually landing himself to work at places like LOCI in SLC, Utah and Design Workshop in Aspen, Colorado. Deciding Utah was the place to be, Brett came back from aspen to work for Dave Harris and Scott Peters at EPG, a job that has suited him perfectly. Getting more exposure for EPG in a professional manner is one of Brett s main objectives, which is why he took charge of updating and revamping the firms design website. As for some of Brett s interests, they include Photography, Snowboarding, CrossFit, Soccer, watching soccer, watching CrossFit, motorcycles, riding motorcycles, His wife, His wife s interests, board games (currently Bohnanza), home improvements, and many other things that seem to change all the time. You can see that I have a history of getting myself involved in ASLA and things that I am passionate about. I am passionate about design and creating beautiful places for people. I am also passionate about how people see our profession and how we present ourselves with media. I believe that we can create a better platform for ASLA Utah through different types of media to get in front of those that can make real changes up on the hill and give this profession exposure as a leader in development and planning. So this is my motivation for running for the VP of Visibility + Public Affairs, and if all else fails, at least you will have an up to date website. Nathan Jaramillo, ASLA, PLA Nathan is a Husband, Father, Landscape Architect and Urban Sketcher. He has always loved architecture, cities, drawings and other creative pursuits but upon attending the introduction to Landscape Architecture course at Utah State University he knew Landscape Architecture was the perfect career path for him. Throughout his education Nathan enjoyed multiple internships in City Planning, Horticulture, Urban Planning, and traditional Landscape Architecture. Once he graduated in 2015 he got a job with loftsixfour where he has loved working on large Campus, Park, Rooftop and Multifamily Projects for the last 3 years. Nathan has a huge passion for Landscape Architecture and if he gets the opportunity he hopes to let that passion help promote this great profession. He believes he can do this through being active with the ASLA Instagram account and showing off the great work that Utah Landscape Architects are doing every day. As well as continuing Utah s participation in World Landscape Architecture Month, Parking Day and coming up with new activities like Sketching Tours in Utah Cities to get other people outside the profession involved and excited about what Landscape Architecture is all about.
Secretary Boyd Reschke BLA, ASLA I am a huge fan of landscape architecture and have been since my introduction to it at age 48. I had decided to make a career change and during the process of figuring it out, landscape architect simply popped into my head, so I did the research and that was it. I was hooked, entered the program at USU and earned a BA in LA in 2008 and it changed my life. As you may recall, 2008 was not a great time to get a job as an LA, so my path took me to the commercial landscaping side of things. I signed on with John Deere Landscapes and had a position that allowed me to meet with hundreds of landscape contractors and others in the industry, throughout the country all attributable to the training I received at USU. Over the years I have had the opportunity to reviewed hundreds of landscape plans at a very granular level and continue to do so in my capacity as commercial estimator for TruCo Services in Salt Lake City. Over the years, I have enjoyed my association with our ASLA chapter and I care about its success, which is why I would like to serve on the board. I believe that I have a perspective of landscape architecture, as an end user along with my training in the profession, that can be beneficial to the organization. Landscape architecture is as important now as it ever has been and is changing the world in a great way. Kyle Funk, BLA, ASLA Kyle recently graduated from Utah State University where he completed his bachelor s degree in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. As a student he was involved in the Community Design Studio, worked as a Teaching Assistant, and developed a passion for service-oriented learning. The project he feels most grateful to have been a part of was the master plan of an orphanage in Colón, Querétaro, México, where he saw firsthand the positive impact that the profession can have on the lives of people. Kyle served as the secretary for the ASLA Student Chapter at Utah State and enjoyed associating with and learning from his peers and professors while working together to plan, organize, and execute many events and programs that enhanced the experiences of LAEP students. His major roles were taking note of the many great ideas produced by the presidency, keeping track of the various things the organization was working toward, and organizing the election process. As a professional, Kyle hopes to continue his commitment to Landscape Architecture by volunteering, serving, and representing the profession well. He is always very excited and willing to share with the community his enthusiasm about the profession.
