Description Inventory No. PG: 87B-026 Condition excellent good X fair deteriorated ruins altered Prepare both a one paragraph summary and a comprehensive description of the resource and its various elements as it exists today. The is located at Neck Road near Aquasco, Maryland. However, the number on the dwelling indicates the address is Neck Road. The is located to the east of an unpaved circular drive on a sloping lot. A wood fence surrounds the dwelling to the west and north. Mature trees and shrubs, dense in areas, mark the property. Situated to the southeast of the dwelling is a shed. DWELLING The was constructed in late-nineteenth century. This wood-frame building has an I-house form and has been reclad in vinyl siding. The side-gable roof, covered in asphalt shingles, features a front-gable pediment on the façade (west elevation). The roof features overhanging eaves and a box cornice. An exterior-end brick chimney with corbeled cap is located on the north (side) elevation. An entry portico is located on the façade, while a screened porch is located on the north (side) elevation. The façade (east elevation) features a centrally placed, one-story, one-bay portico. The portico is supported by four wood posts and capped by a front-gable roof covered with asphalt shingles. The gable end of the portico is clad in vinyl siding. The portico shelters a single-leaf, paneled wood door featuring one-light sidelights and a three-light transom. Two 1/1 vinyl-sash windows with vinyl-clad surrounds flank the door. The second story is fenestrated by a small 6/6 window with wood surround flanked by two 1/1 vinyl-sash windows with vinyl-clad surrounds. The front-gable pediment is fenestrated by a semi-circular arched window with wooden sill and surround. The south (side) elevation is fenestrated by centrally located 1/1 vinyl-sash window with vinyl-clad surround at the first and second stories. The north (side) elevation is fenestrated by a 1/1 vinyl-sash window with vinyl-clad surround located at the first story, east of the chimney. The first story features a screened porch. Based on its form and materials, it appears the porch was constructed in the mid-twentieth century. Set on a poured concrete foundation and capped by a shed roof covered with asphalt shingles, the porch features screened openings. The east (rear) elevation is fenestrated by two 1/1 vinyl-sash windows with vinyl-clad surrounds located in the northern bays of the second story. Located on the east (rear) elevation is a one-story, full-width addition. Based on its form and materials, it appears the addition was constructed in the mid-twentieth century. Clad in vinyl siding, the addition is capped by a shed roof covered with asphalt shingles. An exterior-side brick chimney is located on the east elevation. Fenestration of the east elevation consists of a single-leaf wood door with lights flanked by paired 1/1 vinylsash windows with vinyl-clad surrounds. The south elevation of the addition is fenestrated by a 1/1 vinyl-sash

The interior of the was not accessible at the time of the 2008 on-site survey. GARAGE Located to the southeast of the dwelling is a one-story garage. Based on its form and materials, it appears the garage was constructed in the mid-twentieth century and rebuilt c This concrete-block structure has no exterior cladding. The front-gable roof has no covering. Rafters are the only extant element of the roof. Fenestration consists of a single-leaf wood door on the north elevation flanked by window openings covered with plywood. The window openings feature wood surrounds and rowlock sills. The south elevation is fenestrated by two, large, single-leaf wood doors. The doors are currently off their hinges and are no longer operable. A small, one-story, one-bay addition is located on the west elevation of the garage. Based on its form and materials, it appears the addition was constructed c This concrete-block addition has no exterior cladding and is capped by a gable roof covered with metal sheets. The addition is missing half of its roof and has a collapsed west elevation. The interior of the garage was not accessible at the time of the 2008 on-site survey. INTEGRITY The retains a moderate level of integrity. Late-twentieth-century additions on the east (rear) elevation have not altered the form of the dwelling, as seen from Neck Road. The recent addition of vinyl siding and enclosure of the north (side) elevation porch has affected dwelling s integrity of materials, design, and workmanship. The construction of a large single-family house within sight of the dwelling to the north has diminished its integrity of setting, feeling, and association. Sited at the end of a long, one-lane road in rural Aquasco, Maryland, the retains its integrity of location as the property, as well as the surrounding properties, remain rural. The garage maintains a low level of integrity. It has lost its integrity of design, materials, and workmanship due to its current poor condition. The garage has lost its integrity of association, feeling, and setting as a result of its vacancy. The garage, situated close to the, maintains its integrity of location. (For compliance projects, complete evaluation on a DOE Form see manual.) STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The was constructed in the late-nineteenth century at Neck Road near Aquasco, Maryland. The dwelling is an example of the many vernacular farmhouses built in Prince George s County in the second half of the nineteenth century. The dwelling has an I-house plan with rear addition, a front-gable pediment, and a full-width side porch. As a result of several alterations and the rear addition, the does not retain sufficient integrity to convey its significance as a late-nineteenth-century I-house constructed in southern Prince George s County. HISTORIC CONTEXT The is located approximately one mile south of Aquasco, Maryland, a rural agricultural village located in southeastern Prince George s County. Aquasco Road (MD 381) serves as the major north-south transportation route in the community. The village s location between the Patuxent River on the east and Swanson s Creek on the west created a fertile area of farmland, primarily used to grow tobacco. Historically, tobacco was an important commodity in the community. The area s proximity to the Patuxent River not only contributed to the fertileness of the land, but also allowed access for the shipment of goods in and out of the community. By 1746, the production of tobacco was significant enough that a tobacco inspection warehouse was proposed for construction close to the community at Trueman s Point. Although the inspection station was never established, the landing was integral to commerce and trade. 1 In the eighteenth century, the area around Aquasco was divided into large tobacco plantations. 2 By the end of the eighteenth century, Aquasco Road was established through the area, resulting in the formation of a small village known as Woodville. 3 By the mid- 1 Pearl, African-American Heritage Survey, Mark Andrich, et al., Aquasco Historic District (PG: 87B-36), State Historic Sites Inventory Form (1984), 7:1. 3 Pearl, African-American Heritage Survey, 106.

5 Maryland Inventory of Inventory No. PG: 87B-026 Number 8 Page 1 nineteenth century, Martenet s Map of 1861 documents a grist mill, several stores, a tavern, blacksmith shop, several churches, and a wind mill. 4 Today the area is known as Aquasco. Martenet s map also documents A. H. Scott living south of Aquasco. The indicated location of residence does not match with current or historic maps, suggesting that the had not been built yet and A. H. Scott lived at Saint Phillips Road, the Scott Farmhouse (PG: 87B-011). Hopkins Atlas of 1878 notes Richard M. Scott living in the area of the. 5 Richard M. Scott, born c. 1843, was listed as a farmer at the time of the 1880 U.S. Federal Census. 6 Scott resided with his wife, Mary, and their five children. In 1885, Richard M. Scott conveyed the property to his wife, Mary Scott. 7 In 1955, Norman and Kathron Walker Lynn conveyed the property to Alfonso and Rose Procopio. 8 Alfonso Procopio, along with Albert Procopio, developed Aquasco Speedway, one of the pioneering dragstips on the east coast. 9 Aquasco Speedway is located south of the, on the same parcel of land. Currently the track is closed and entrance is barred by a locked gate. The Procopios also owned and operated Capitol Raceway in Crofton, Maryland and Cecil County Dragway in Rising Sun. The track was closed in In 1999, Alfonso Procopio conveyed the property to Raymond F. and Anita R. Procopio. 11 In 2002, Karen R. Thomas purchased the property from Raymond F. and Anita R.
