3 PRESENTATION OF THE COMPANY Alpina is one of the oldest engineering companies in Italy. It was established in Milan in 1954 and has participated in the economic life of the city for the past 60 years. Formerly owned by the holding companies La Centrale Finanziaria S.p.A. and Bastogi S.p.A., since 1989 it is owned by the professionals who work there. Present partners are eng. Guido Peri; arch. Marco Conte; eng. Paola Erba; Dr. Federico Peri. The company s paid-up capital is Eur entirely private and not connected with any building company, gear supplier or financial company. Alpina produces designs for largescale infrastructures and buildings, performs feasibility and territorial planning studies, provides supervision of works, technical, financial and administrative advice and manages the construction of projects with attention to safety, environment and costs. Alpina specializes in the following four disciplines: - HYDRAULICS (hydroelectric power plants, river structures, dams); - TRANSPORTATION (highways, railways); - STRUCTURES (Civil engineering structures and buildings) - UNDERGROUND (subways, tunnels, soil treatment, foundations); - URBAN DEVELOPMENT (primary and secondary urbanization projects) - PUBLIC BUILDINGS (public buildings). The company s turnover has remained steady in recent years at around 5,5 million Euro per year and regards exclusively the engineering services above indicated. At present Alpina has projects in in Italy, France, Denmark, Azerbaijan, Montenegro, Chile, Saudi Arabia and Israel. In recent years it has also worked in Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Ecuador, UAE, Ethiopia, the former Yugoslavia, Jordan, Greece, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kenya, Liberia, Libya, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Panama, Qatar, Somalia, Spain, Tanzania and Yemen. Alpina holds the Quality Management System Certificate for the Standard UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 issued by Det Norske Veritas; the certification is for the following ranges of services: Feasibility studies, design works supervision, safety works supervision and safety coordination of large scale engineering projects including: hydroelectric power plants, tunnels, river intakes and embankments, dams, roads and railways, bridges, quarries, infrastructures and buildings. Provision of project review and technical control services for civil and plant engineering (Sector EA: 34). Alpina is insured against professional risks with a specific Professional All Risks policy. Its designers are qualified to perform the role of safety coordinator under Italian Law Decree n 81/08. Alpina is registered and qualified in accordance with several private and public engineering service suppliers qualification systems in Italy and with Lyon Turin Ferroviaire in France. Alpina s organization includes about 70 employees. It is thus large enough to handle big projects but also well organized to closely supervise every design with personal care by directly involving top company engineers and designers.

4 GEOTECHNICAL AND UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES Alpina is engaged in the design and supervision of construction with geotechnical and structural experience of large underground works, special foundations and, more in general, all types of works largely adhering to earth. Some of the works designed by Alpina in the world of underground projects in Italy and abroad constitute a unique case not only in the tunnelling itself but also in the design of large underground spaces, for example, the plant of Pont Ventoux that represents one of the largest rock vault carried out in Italy in the Alps not supported by structural arch and the underpass of the monumental complex of the Oudayas in Rabat, Morocco. The intense design of underground works allows a constant refinement of the ability to model the structures and the ground in different geomechanical contexts thanks to the use of advanced geotechnical softwares such as FEM/DEM in two and three-dimensional field. The reliability of forecasting and the optimisation of the design choices are enhanced by the knowledge gained in assisting companies in the stages of construction of the works designed with a special attention to the management of large construction projects that use various technologies of excavation (drill&blast, bottom-up, top-down mechanised opencut, mining etc.) or the more recently developed technologies (consolidation with jet-grouting, gravel piles, plastic piles and diaphragms, vibro-compaction procedures, use of geosynthetics, freezing, consolidation grouting and waterproofing of land). Such knowledge - combined with the distinctive multidisciplinary vocation of the company - often allows an innovative approach for solving geotechnical and foundation problems in the field of infrastructures (for example, the realisations for the Turin-Milan, Milan-Verona High-Speed Railway, Pedemontana Lombarda, Aqueduct of Romagna etc.) and in large housing projects of public interest and urban redevelopment, including the recent works carried out for the Garibaldi Repubblica and Citylife recovery plans in Milan and for the new Opera Teatre in Baku, Azerbaijan.
