Branding Vision The ABM achieves the following objectives for the Architectural Branding of the Qatar Integrated Railway Network, which reflects the Qatar Railway Company s mission: A. Create a world-class public transportation network B. Establish a Network Identity recognizable in the urban surroundings C. Improve the existing local urban connectivity 10

Vaulted Spaces Building upon elements within regional culture, the vault in the Architectural Branding Vision represents a referential bridge between the historic architecture and culture of Qatar and its future as a beacon of innovation and prosperity. Drawing inspiration from the arch expressions of Islamic architecture, the lightness of the dhow sail, and the tensile profiles of the nomadic tents, the Vaulted Spaces design proposes a step forward in the interpretation and morphological implementation of these elements. LOCAL MORPHOLOGY Each station becomes a cultural vehicle within the network and a local reference point within the urban context. IMPRESSION 11

Oyster The materialization principles are a contrast between a modest exterior versus a rich, illuminated mother of pearl interior The exteriors reference the bowing sail ships of the typical Qatari dhow and the monolithic strength of old Qatari architecture, while the interior spaces create a radiant effect of movement and fluidity. This uniquely Qatari ornamentation and material palette assists in dividing the large interior spaces and guiding pedestrians towards the transient spaces. The pearlescent vaults become identifiers of vertical circulation and access along the journey. The light lines amplify the experience, function as natural way finding elements and contribute to a unique ambience for the Metro Network. MATERIAL SYNERGY MATERIALIZATION IMPRESSION 12

Adaptability Flexibility throughout the Metro Network becomes a design and planning objective at all levels of intervention. Drawing upon the intricate and varied geometries of the Islamic architectural tradition, the design proposal represents a flexible new architectural system which can adapt itself to the scalar challenges set within the Metro Network. Education Type Msheireb Type Through a system of interconnections, the design adapts and transforms to incorporate programmatic functions and to connect interior spaces with exterior urban context. FLEXIBILITY 13 MODULAR SYSTEM

Scale of Identity REVEALING THE IDENTITY The Architectural Branding of the Qatar Rail Metro Network defines a comprehensive design approach that characterizes all the stations in the network. The Architectural Branding localizes zones which are constantly present during the journey and will be recognized by a predominant identifier: 1. NETWORK IDENTITY The accessibility to the network is clearly identified within the urban fabric of Doha through a consistent, integral and recognizable architecture. 2. LINE IDENTITY Once inside the network, an internal variation, relating to the four thematic transportation lines, each with their own attributes and atmospheres, orients and guides the travelers along their journey. 3. STATION IDENTITY Each station becomes a cultural vehicle throughout the network via art installations, media, or informative content that relates to the corresponding local character of the stations. 14

Network Identity BRAND Stations design will be consistent throughout the journey of the Metro Network in order to create an iconic brand. This can be achieved by establishing constant design principles which are applied to the Branding Elements. Recurring design elements will leave a lasting impression on the travelers and enhance the overall atmosphere in the network. The general design atmosphere will be consistent through the steady and rational spatial sequences and main elements. Education Type Msheireb Type 15

Line Identity, Network NETWORK BASE The base material palette is generally muted palette that allows the form of the vaulted spaces on several important materials shine through. The accent of the ornamental tiles on the vaults is not lost in this subtle set of colors, but provides just the sheen and contrast. The Base Identity is distinguished by subtle, brown-toned natural stones. This may be yellow limestone's, amber travertines or calacata gold marbles. The wall material in the Base Identity is brass, serving as a foreground to the natural stones around it. This palette is a noble one to highlight the care and quality that goes into the Doha Metro system. IDENTIFIER WALL FLOOR 16

Line Identity Msheireb Station THEME ATMOSPHERE Orientation and identification of the metro lines becomes better defined as the traveler approaches the platform. Moving from concourse to train a bright, colorful underground world starts to reveal itself to the traveler. The network has defined four thematic channels next to the base identity used for the non line branded spaces: 1. Red Line (Coastal Line) References pearl diving, fishing, ship building, and marine trade 2. Green Line (Education Line) References eminent Islamic science development, writing, and poetry 3. Gold Line (Historic Line) References the actual location, historic artifacts, and the richness of Islamic Art. 4. Blue Line ( City Line) References the prosperous future development of Qatar 17

Station Identity FOCAL POINTS Installations with features such as media attractors, localized at strategic points along the traveler's journey, give recognizable content related to specific stations and urban adjacencies. The contents of the installations reflect the uniqueness of the particular station, evoking its critical role in the city and the network. The contents of the focal points will be curated by QRC. JV to provide focal points at locations indicated with appropriate MEP supply. 18

DS1, Msheireb Station Box & Context ENTRANCE SHELTER LEVEL Mott MacDonald's scope was up to ground level however in order to complete the station design they were required to make provisional allowance for above grade popus, MEP requirements and an enclosure at the entrance building locations. MEZZANINE LEVEL Some structural amendments to slab edges were required by QR to the approved DS1 submission. This caused significant delay and disruption to the DS2 design process. CONCOURSE LEVEL The main MEP level required significant redesign to accommodate the revised slab positions. This was the primary factor in the supply of updated DS1 drawings and models. RED/GREEN PLATFORM LEVEL Several unresolved DS1 design issues carried over into the DS2 design programme, including: Ventilation terminals at Al Diwan Street, open fire escape stairs, ceiling heights and gold line switch back. GOLD LINE PLATFORM LEVEL Ceiling heights and FOH/BOH wall line positions were revisited during DS2. 24

M1 Geometry, Msheireb 25

M1 Geometry, Msheireb 26

M1 Geometry, Msheireb The Special Entrance Shelter is applicable to selected stations, for example the Msheireb Station. It is organized on a variation of the modular system utilized in the large shelters and adapted to the entrance size, structural grid, and circulation void of the station design. Acting as a sort of Caravanserai, which were inns with enclosed courts that served as resting places on ancient trade routes, the Special Entrance Shelter accommodates travelers by giving them a place to congregate. The space is conceived to be experienced as part of the journey itself: different lighting features and materials guide the traveler through the building, serving as the first step towards the platform. 27

M1 Geometry, Msheireb SHELTER COLUMN ALIGNMENT The Msheireb Main Entrance Shelter geometry was supplied to the Joint Venture DS2 Design Team by way of a 3D model as a one off Special Condition, unique within the network. The DS1 Station Box primary structural setting out was to be considered fixed and was not subject to change. N However, while the DS1 structural setting out principles of the Station Box were similar to that of the ABM, there were significant differences in the dimensional general arrangement of the Station Box structure relative to the Entrance Shelter structural geometry. The result was a misalignment of the below grade columns with the above grade Entrance Shelter structural support legs. FIXED COLUMN POSITION AT CONCOURSE LEVEL VOID TO CONCOURSE PERIMETER OF MEP ZONE 28

M1 Geometry, Msheireb 29

M1 Geometry, Msheireb SHELTER COLUMN ALIGNMENT After exploring the possibility of warping the existing tile arrangement to align the Entrance Shelter columns with the contractually fixed station box columns below. It was agreed that a revised Entrance Shelter design would be supplied by Qatar Rail, incorporating a new roof element which would align the 3 Entrance Shelter columns with the Station Box columns below. MEZZANINE SLAB EDGE In parallel it was agreed that a minor amendment to the structural slab edge at mezzanine level would allow additional columns to be exposed down their leading edge giving a consistent detail around the mezzanine void and giving the illusion of taller columns and shallower floor zones. 30

M1 Geometry, Msheireb ABM CEILING HEIGHTS The proportions outlined in the ABM required high ceilings in public areas, in excess of 5m clear. However due to the track alignment at platform levels and the road make up at grade. The overall height available could not support the structure and MEP requirements and provide 5m clear ceiling heights ABM Column footprint DS1 STRUCTURAL CONSTRAINTS The result was an enlarged floor zone with reduced ceiling heights. This had a detrimental effect on the resultant public spaces and in turn dictated the geometrical setting out of some of the vaults, particularly at single storey columns ABM Column footprint
