13 Confident People Wigan Council has pledged 1.5m into a Business Apprenticeship Programme to increase the number of apprenticeships in the borough. The scheme works by supporting local businesses who want to take on an apprentice with a grant. The programme is unique in Greater Manchester and underlines Wigan Council s commitment to making sure that young people in the borough get the skills to gain employment and have successful careers in their local area. So far this has supported the employment of nearly 400 apprenticeships in almost 300 businesses with more than 1m of the programme being invested. The council practices what it preaches with well over 200 apprentices at the council currently.

14 Social Value Wigan Council is committed to the values set out in the GMCA Social Values Policy and the Council s Deal. These include: Promoting employment and economic sustainability to tackle unemployment and facilitate the development of skills Raising the living standards of local residents to work towards living wage, maximise employee access to entitlements such as childcare and encourage suppliers to source labour from within Greater Manchester Promoting participation and citizen engagement to encourage resident participation and promote active citizenship Building the capacity and sustainability of the voluntary and community sector practical support for local voluntary and community groups Promoting equity and fairness target effort towards those in the greatest need or facing the greatest disadvantage and tackle deprivation across the borough Promoting environmental sustainability reduce wastage, limit energy consumption and procure materials from sustainable sources We look to our partners and contractors to support us in this wherever possible
