2 University of Academic Center of Natural Sciences Jelgavas iela Riga The Academic Center houses around 1500 students from 5 faculties, the faculties of Biology, Geography and Earth Science, Chemistry, Medicine as well as the Department of Optometry and Vision Science department of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics The UL ACNS is the first building in the territory spanning 45 hectares, which, by 2023, will house an entire new, modern and harmonic campus Sestais Stils s 2

3 National Library of Mukusalas iela Riga Since 2014, the National Library of is located in a building on Mukusalas Street 3 (Castle of Light) The library building was designed by the internationally acclaimed n-born architect Gunnar Birkerts (USA), and it is among the greatest cultural projects of the 21st century in Besides the standard services and routine operations, the Castle of Light and its infrastructure serves as a platform for activities of various cooperation partners and a place of unique creative synergies 2014 Gunnar Birkerts 3

4 Swedbank Central Office Balasta dambis 1a 1048 Riga Lately, the most eye-catching feature of the left bank of the River Daugava is the emerging office building of Swedbank, standing up tall and attractive over the river The architectural shape of the building was defined by its location, consequently, the silhouette carries the key role in the building's design It is characterized by lightness, dynamism, and transparency The glazed facade solution was put in place so as to allow some angles of full transparency of the building - it could be referred to as the most transparent building in the Baltics The glass shading and the pools fitted in the green area underline the symbolic lucidity and lightness The dynamics of the design is enforced by the fact that it looks different as viewed from different viewpoints - every time you see it as if anew 2004 Main designer, Tectum Zenico Projekts 4

5 Z Towers Daugavgrivas iela Riga The design of the project Z-Towers is done by the leading architectural Bureau in FL Tadao & Luksevics (NRJA) The design of the facades and the exterior design of the Z-Towers was done by world-famous architect Helmut Jahn The interior design and design of surrounding areas is entrusted to the famous n architect Andis Silis 2016 Main designer, Interior architect FL Tadao & Luksevics Andis Silis Helmut Jahn 5

6 photo: Rodney Cudmore photo: Rodney Cudmore Majori Primary School Sports Hall Rigas iela Jurmala photo: Rodney Cudmore The object has a strategically significant location because it is visible from all passings to Jurmala: the railway, the city's main street and the river that has live boat traffic with the capital of Riga The object is a significant accent in the city's overall landscape, and consequently its shape and silhouette is especially important It is a rather prominent volume compared to the surrounding 1-2 story buildings Therefore, it was important to integrate the object into the existing landscape by reducing its height The variable height of the shed is a peculiar compromise between the heights necessary for sports games and the surrounding low-story buildings The volleyball ground is located in the centre of the shed opposite spectators stands, while the shed's height in direction of sides gradually decreases The sloping surfaces on the sides of the shed are associated to the two-sided slopes of nearby low-story buildings Floor area/size m² Client Substance Jurmala City Council Atozone_Tonine 6

7 photo: Arne Maasik photo: Arne Maasik Pärnu Residential Building Seedri Tänav Pärnu Estonia The seaside town of Pärnu is Estonia's Riviera - dubbed the 'summer capital', it boasts a beautiful sandy beach and around-the-clock night-life in summer urally, Pärnu is associated more than any other town with a white functionalist style Some of the finest works of 1930s architecture, inspired by technological progress and strict modernism, stand here Supelfunktionalism -'swim-funk', if you will- has become Pärnu's trademark, and the everyday life of these buildings is strictly monitored by the heritage conservation authorities Kalle Vellevoog had no problem with this context as he is a staunch adherent of white Funk - meticulous, rigorous, detail-oriented The holiday apartment building he created is fairly strict and imposes clear contours The V-shaped building has gallery access along glassed-in corridors that overlook an interior courtyard with a solitary tree planted in the middle This outdoor area is not for lingering, but for observing the building itself photo: Arne Maasik Project is not public! 8 n Academy of Sciences Turgeneva iela Riga The Academy of Sciences edifice was built after World War II, between 1951 and 1961, collecting the necessary financing from the newly established kolkhozes in and - as further expenses increased, collecting the finances as "voluntary donations" deducted from the salaries of the n rural population The building is decorated with several hammer and sickle symbols as well as n folk ornaments and motifs The spire was originally decorated with a wreath and a five pointed star, which was removed after regained independence in 1991 Being 108 metres tall, it was the first skyscraper in the republic and was the tallest building until the construction of the Swedbank Headquarters in, 121 m 1961 Main designer, Osvalds Tilmanis Karlis Pluksne Vaidelotis Apsitis 8
