Fahle House Tartu maantee 84A Tallinn Estonia In the United States, the phenomenon of revamped industrial buildings began some decades ago, when the new middle-class became tired of suburban life and started to move back to the city centres 'Loft living' became the new lifestyle and a successful real-estate product Today, this is happening in Estonia The Fahle Building, a former paper factory perched on one of the highest points in Tallinn, has become the city's first large-scale example of industrial rebirth It has restaurants, office spaces and now, towering over all this, a new glass box with apartments The objective is clear: to emphasize the imposing factory building by adding a new layer to this landmark, a fashion statement in the form of a sexy glass building overlooking the city The 14-storey structure does not try to blend in or to hide its modern appearance It is a fitting apotheosis for what was, until recently, a heap of crumbling limestone walls 2007 KOKO s Koger & Partners Triin_Ojari The Fahle Building is public, the newly added apartments are not 2
photo: Paleko ARCH studio photo: Paleko ARCH studio Litexpo Pavilion Laisves Prospektas Vilnius Lithuania Located on a former flood plain of the Neris River, the original 30-year old pavilion and its newer, rather temporary-looking neighbours were judged too small to handle the crowds and an expansion project was established to boost capacity and revamp the entire site Primary requirements were strengthening the 'sense of place', unification of the existing pavilions into a functional whole and the creation of a new visual landmark for the central expo piazza The new structure is a simple triangle in plan, which is both respectful and significant: its diagonal face redirects views to the surrounding green hills, while the rectangular rear blends functionally with the existing grid The diagonal elevation is revealed as if by cutting an imaginary enclosed square volume The roof extends out over the glass screen, creating a canopy that emphasizes the overlapping of inside and outside spaces The main elevation has been eliminated in favour of the smooth transition of space photo: Paleko ARCH studio 2006 Paleko ARCH studio Lithuanian Exhibition Centre Litexpo Bartenis_Siaulytis 3
Koidula Street Apartment Building L Koidula Tallinn Estonia 3+1 s prove that the suburban dream can be realized down town, too Their apartment building is located in an old neighbourhood, right next to the city centre of Tallinn The complex consists of two parts: a building with six apartments dating from the late 19th-century historicist period, joined to a new three-storey building, which projects into the yard - one of the complex's most valuable assets The building is innovative for its typological variety Each of the ten apartments has a different floor plan and there are several duplexes The façades display a similar differentiation The glazed stairwells visible behind the façade on the garden side, boldly cut through the private sphere and convey a sense of openness, while the street façade, clad with Aluzinc, creates a more closed impression and echoes the folds of the roof forms The project offers the qualities of a detached house, such as privacy and spatial variety, just a 5 minute tram ride from the city centre Project is not public! 2005 Landscape designer 3+1 s Atelier le Balto Private Triin_Ojari 4

photo: Indrikis Sturmanis photo: Indrikis Sturmanis Private House in Sigulda Gulbju Iela Sigulda Latvia Largely invisible from the street, this private house received an award for the best Latvian architectural design of 2004, beating all its heavyweight rivals and becoming a place of pilgrimage for both architects and the general public The hillside on which the building sits was first excavated and then filled in again once the house was completed The plot was strongly landscaped in bands of simple 'materials': a rye field skirting the street, a grassy lane on the valley side, gravel for the 'cour d'honneur', and pebbles for the tourist trail that passes across the roof of the building The house itself is an elongated, linear structure, whose orthogonal geometry provides a backbone for the skewed volumetric composition and spatial layout A combination of rough, massive surfaces and smooth, light elements meanders through the house Slanting, protruding and naturally uneven elements create a genuine sense of nature photo: Indrikis Sturmanis 2004 General consultant Associate architect Associate architect ARHIS Barbara Abele Juris Lasis Kristaps Sulcs Undisclosed Anita_Anteniske The house itself is private, but a tourist trail passes through the plot and across the roof 6
photo: Ingmar Muusikus photo: Ingmar Muusikus Suure-Jaani Sports Centre Lembitu tee Suure-Jaani Estonia According to Suure-Jaani locals, a 'vegetable soup' has emerged literally in their rural town in Southern Estonia Veronika Valk sums up her creation: "The neo-pop bright coloured sports complex features open-plan ball courts with sponge-like walls and felt panel ceilings for acoustic comfort Kids are thrilled by the fully climbable façade - concrete slabs covered with a perimetral ladder of untreated Siberian larix The canopy's slim steel supports separating the inner courtyard from the street are in fact bicycle racks The interior design is full of integrated solutions, eg cupboards as drawing boards and exterior lighting doubling as interior illumination via glass cupolas" photo: Ingmar Muusikus Public access unknown! 2005 Associate architect Associate architect Veronika Valk Katrin Koov Siiri Vallner Suure-Jaani City Government 7
Pärnu Residential Building Seedri Tänav Pärnu Estonia The seaside town of Pärnu is Estonia's Riviera - dubbed the 'summer capital', it boasts a beautiful sandy beach and around-the-clock night-life in summer urally, Pärnu is associated more than any other town with a white functionalist style Some of the finest works of 1930s architecture, inspired by technological progress and strict modernism, stand here Supelfunktionalism -'swim-funk', if you will- has become Pärnu's trademark, and the everyday life of these buildings is strictly monitored by the heritage conservation authorities Kalle Vellevoog had no problem with this context as he is a staunch adherent of white Funk - meticulous, rigorous, detail-oriented The holiday apartment building he created is fairly strict and imposes clear contours The V-shaped building has gallery access along glassed-in corridors that overlook an interior courtyard with a solitary tree planted in the middle This outdoor area is not for lingering, but for observing the building itself Project is not public! 9 Gedimino 9 Shopping Centre Gedimino Avenue 9 LT Vilnius Lithuania On April 18th, the new shopping centre Gedimino 9 opened in Vilnius The shopping centre was opened after renovations that took one and half years The building located on the city's central artery has been adapted for trade, business and citizens' leisure purposes More than 60 retail outlets have already opened or are due to open in the near future at the Gedimino 9 shopping centre The design works and the plans to regenerate the former Vilnius Municipality building were commissioned to the architects of a Danish company PLH s and a Lithuanian company Archinova The general contractor of the project is one of the largest building companies in the country, UAB Constructus [text of Gedimino 9] Floor area/size m² Main designer, Interior architect Contractor PLH pkrajewski_pl Archinova UAB Constructus Duke House Asset Managers Monday to Saturday: 10 am to 8 pm Sunday: 11 am to 6 pm Gedimino is the main avenue in the Vilnius old so it's not a problem to find it 9
Karaliaus Mindaugo Bridge Mindaugo Tiltas Vilnius Lithuania The architectural solution of the metal arch construction bridge was influenced by its location - a bend of the river Neris emphasized by four asymmetrically placed arches The bridge has three driving lanes and two pavements An important restriction on the design was to respect the Gediminas Tower, a very important historical object for the Lithuanian people, located close to the bridge The form and shape of the bridge is rather low, to avoid blocking the view on the tower, so the people can see it from many places 2003 Vladas Treinys City of Vilnius pkrajewski_pl 10
Europa Shopping Centre Konstitucijos 7a Vilnius Lithuania A three-storey m2 trade centre is a composite part of the total "Europa" trade and business unit The building of a plastic form stands by its blind facade along Konstitucijos Avenue A complex roof from a steel framework aluminum constructions and glass of a different size provides the interior of a passage with transparency and lightness In 2004 business and trade centre "Europa" was awarded the price "CEE Real Estate" ad the best multi-functional project in Central and Eastern Europe Floor area/size m² Audrius Ambrasas s pkrajewski_pl EUROPA is open from 08:00 till 24:00 Cafes are open from 8:00 till 24:00 Maxima is open from 8:00 till 23:00 Shops are open from 10:00 till 22:
The Barricades Gedimino Vilnius Lithuania The concrete barricades were put together by people in January 1991, to defend the parliament of newly restored republic from the pending soviet invasion In 2007 part of these barricades were covered with glass covers, and now serves as a monument to those who gave their lives for the independence 2007 Vilnius ural Studio pkrajewski_pl 12

photo: Ahti Kooskora photo: Ahti Kooskora Elamu Võidu 30 Võidu Rakvere Estonia It's very common that buildings have a flashy façade but a completely plain backside This is especially characteristic to straight situated dwelling houses in towns This project tries to create the opposite: an emphatic back side, more vivid ends and a flat front facade Although the building is made mainly out of concrete, it looks like a wooden house This material suits well into Rakveres borough milieu The colour scheme of the house creates a morphosis by the change of seasons In summer white blots contrast into the green area but merge during the snowy winter photo: Ahti Kooskora Public access unknown! 15 photo: Rodney Cudmore photo: Rodney Cudmore 2 Sisters House Langstini Garkalne Riga Latvia This building consists of two independent residential premises, based on reinforced concrete piles, forming covered external spaces First floor is a connecting space for entrance zone and rooms of common use The way these spaces are connected allows creating individual living environment and maximum isolation with a view to Langstini Lake Project is not public! Floor area/size m² No Rules Just ure Atozone_Tonine Driving away from Riga on the A2, take the first exit after the A4 exit Then, Take the 4th left and drive about 05km down the road The house will be on your right 15
photo: Rodney Cudmore photo: Rodney Cudmore Majori Primary School Sports Hall Rigas iela Jurmala Latvia photo: Rodney Cudmore The object has a strategically significant location because it is visible from all passings to Jurmala: the railway, the city's main street and the river that has live boat traffic with the capital of Latvia Riga The object is a significant accent in the city's overall landscape, and consequently its shape and silhouette is especially important It is a rather prominent volume compared to the surrounding 1-2 story buildings Therefore, it was important to integrate the object into the existing landscape by reducing its height The variable height of the shed is a peculiar compromise between the heights necessary for sports games and the surrounding low-story buildings The volleyball ground is located in the centre of the shed opposite spectators stands, while the shed's height in direction of sides gradually decreases The sloping surfaces on the sides of the shed are associated to the two-sided slopes of nearby low-story buildings Floor area/size m² Substance Jurmala City Council Atozone_Tonine 16
