3 NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY GRADUATE STUDENT BUILDING AS LANDSCAPE The project is a catalogue of diffferent case studies from all over the world that resemble landscape in its form, function and appearance. these projects were specifically selected for they being a public space and at the same time being a building that merges with the site context to become a part of the topography. Antinory Winery Biesbosch Museum Olympic Sculpture Yokohama Terminal Espana Library Heyder Aliyev Center Park A space is defined by the programs and its functions. a public space is categorized as the space that is not functioned privately by any institution or organization. it could also be a part of the building or be an open space serving for all kinds of people, from kids to adults. The move between private and public spaces can also vary from a well defined boundary to a more loose transition. Expanded forms From all the buildings that I have studied from across the world, I observed that all the buildings, being a public space, in their own way resembles landscape elements.they all function effectively as per their site context. For further understanding, I have cassified them as expanded and compact according to their form responding to the existing site topography. Expanded 1. Entire structure is accessible 2. Functions for outdoor activites as well 3. Forms new terrain Compact forms Compact 1. Limited access 2. Less activities and interaction 3. Disguise like a landscape element but performs as an object.
4 NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY GRADUATE STUDENT BUILDING AS LANDSCAPE It was observed that expanded landscapes make better public spaces. the designs are : Reactive : more approachable to the people using that space. Responsive : the notion of sidewalks is relived by providing an alternative viewing platform. Relevant : the building reflects the landscape of the site and its surrounding. Concept providing ample activities invites people to a novel and distinct experience. Form INTERNAL PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENT EXTERNAL PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENT The form of the conceptual prototypical model is derived from the analysis of two of the case studies: The biesbosch musuem and The yokohama terminal. The roof of the biesbosch museum creates an interesting resemblence of mountains and valleys with the water bodies running through the valleys meeting the natural water bodies on the ground. also, the pedestrian on the rood imposes a sense of walking between the mountains. The circulation that occurs in the interior through exterior of the yokohama terminal connects the spaces with multifacilitated programs in many different ways. The surfaces of the roof are extended to merge with ground so as to create continuous open spaces. The conceptual model is built by merging the ideas of the roof of the museum and the interacting circulation from the terminal. The roof unfolds a variation in spaces in the interior as well as in the exterior. Started with a generic form - Square as a space. corridors and pathways connecting the surroundings with the space came along i.e. space+passage. furthermore, the multiple spaces with connecting passages were added. Different spatial experiences were created with the folding of the surfaces. Connections between the spaces were evolved while increasing the variations in the form. Playing with the scale of the spaces responded the program and create multifunctional areas.
