3 Project brief: Development of a premier management institute in the financial capital of India. Provision of a enhanced environment for education of future managers. Thus the need for a well developed educational facilities, administration, infrastructure facilities as well as amenities such as dinning area, auditorium, and interaction spaces. This project was to be handled individually along with the selection of dissertation topic and project brief. Design features: Spatial hierarchy: open, semi-open and enclosed spaces; public, semi- public and private spaces; silent and noisy spaces. Various interaction spaces to entertain student and student-faculty discussions as well as for cultural events. Landscaped spill - out spaces. and study areas to provide a clean and green environment for the students. Barrier free design to enable disabled access throughout the campus. 4 Site Location: Kharghar hill, sector, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. - km away from Kharghar node. Topography: Gently sloping land with the slope increasing towards the south & south-west side. Area: 0 hectares. Kharghar Node: Third most developed node of Navi Mumbai located on the Mumbai-Pune express highway[nh4] and at the foothill of Kharghar hills. It houses many prestigious educational institutes of India. Kharghar hill: Picturesque and peaceful spot of Navi Mumbai, specially during the monsoons. Scenic views of the city and the mountains can be seen. Transportation: Connected to Mumbai by Harbour line of the Mumbai-suburban railway as well as local buses Proposed international airport is approximately km away. 5 KEY FEATURES: Zoning & Orientation: The nature and functions of the spaces is taken into account while zoning. The structures are orientated in such a way to make the maximum use of the north light, thus reducing the energy consumption. 7 Sustainable Design Features: Courtyards, Green pockets, open terraces, terrace gardens and water bodies. Waste water is re-used for gardening purposes. To prevent soil erosion, eco- friendly geo -textiles are used as a base for growing grass. Evergreen trees and rain trees have been used, majorly on the south side to cut down the harsh sun. Also, fins and recessed windows have been used as shading devices. Architectural Character: Small scaled structures [max. g + ], use of anthropometry, use of semi covered [pergolas+slab] corridors connecting the structures. Overall design maintains the indoor and outdoor relation. Interactive Spaces: Wide steps, Outdoor seating, amphitheatre, ledges for seating along the corridors and porch areas. 8 A ACADEMIC BLOCK FACULTY BLOCK B ACADEMIC BLOCK: segregated from the semi public areas. It is designed to make the most of north light and the prevalent wind. A small terrace garden at the first floor acts as a respite for the students. FACULTY BLOCK: connected by a bridge to academic block. A congregational space provided between the faculty & academic block [view A]. LIBRARY BLOCK: various sections are segregated and are layered on split levels. The roof of the adjoining computer center is accessible from the first floor level of the library. 9 A ADMINISTRATION BLOCK: It is the main entrance to the campus. A water body, wide steps covered by a space frame canopy welcome the students, staff and visitors. A transitional space connects the main entry to the rest of the campus, by semi-covered corridors. 10 Project brief: An existing building was to be selected and suitable retrofitting solutions for its fabric were to be proposed, in order to improve the overall performance. About the site: Location: South Mumbai, very close to the sea, Type: office building, Height: g + 4, Year of construction: 90s, Type of construction: frame structure with stone cladding. Current issues: Cooling requirements are high which leads to the use of air conditioning. Inadequate amount of natural light hence use of artificial lighting throughout the day. Humidity levels are high during summer and monsoon seasons. Objectives: Reduce heat gains. Provide adequate ventilation Reduce the humidity levels by using de-humidifiers. 12 Project brief: A guest house for Schlumberger - a leading oilfield service provider. The project includes designing accommodation for company employees [for families & bachelors]. Provision for amenities like restaurant, library, swimming pool & gymnasium. Sports facilities: Squash, badminton, T.T., Pool, basket ball, football & tennis. Site Area: 48,00 sq.ft. Team members:. Project Brief: A resort to be developed for a company which is a pioneer in premium resorts and clubs in India. The project includes designing of a Reception, Time Share Units, a Hotel, amenities such as restaurants, conference rooms, holiday activity and a Spa. My contribution: Contributed extensively from the conceptual stage of the project. Worked on the site layout, zoning, designing and detailing of all the blocks. Prepared presentations for client at various stages of the project. Worked on details and working drawings for all the blocks in coordination with the various consultants involved. Concept: To create buildings that appear visually integrated with one another, View A View A establishing continuity in perception. Use of locally available materials such as wood and stone. Buildings oriented towards the south to maximize penetration of solar radiation and also to benefit the scenic valley views. Use of stepped terraces to decrease the amount of cutting and to maintain slope stability. Also the layering of the structure does not block the views from the pathways.
