LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE CASE STUDIES alkizim muneeer khalid b02/52599/2012 project 1 the learning resource centre

Golden West College Architect: Steinberg Architects Materials: Glass Concrete Location: Huntington Beach, CA, USA The LRC building incorporates green design: LED motion-sensor lights; large skylights to allow daylight into the 3rd and 2nd floors; large north-facing windows for natural light and a view of the native garden; and smaller, metal-screened west-andeast-facing windows to filter sun. The functional design of this building organizes its resources into social, group and individual study areas and staff service areas, allowing for communication and quiet areas to coexist comfortably. The Learning Resource Center The Learning Resource Center converges 10 distinct resources into one shared space, with the intent to improve the student experience, bring learners together, and encourage 21st-century thinking.

The approach and entrance to the building moves visitors through a series of transitional spaces. First, they cross under a suspended installation that establishes a gateway to the campus while reinforcing the entrance to the LRC. Once in the lobby, the space expands into a double height volume that allows a visual and physical connection to the library located on the second floor.as visitors circulate vertically through the lobby, they arrive at another threshold bringing them to the main library entrance. Upon crossing this entry, is a second double height volume within the building. This area connects the second level to the third, acting as the primary circulation between floors. This portion of the library is highlighted further by the large communal seat stair for informal gatherings and presentations, as well as four large skylights that help bring natural lighting into the center of the building. The combination of these three elements -- volume, communal gathering and natural lighting -- create a very dramatic experience upon entering the library. Materials Used Architecturally, the building uses: -a simple palette of architectural concrete, -stainless steel metal panels and -glass for the exterior envelope. The interior s exposed concrete is complemented by the use of bamboo flooring and wall panels, and through the use of vibrant color on both the flooring and furniture.

Once inside, there is a natural organization to the various library sections created by the layering of quiet, collaborative, social and private zones of the floor plan. These are further enhanced by the abundance of high quality natural lighting made possible by maximizing the building s northern exposure. In order to leverage the natural lighting on the east and the west facades, while minimizing solar heat gain, the glazing units have an integrated, expandable metal skin on the innermost layers. The LRC building incorporates green design: LED motion-sensor lights; large skylights to allow daylight into the 3rd and 2nd floors; large north-facing windows for natural light and a view of the native garden; and smaller, metal-screened west-and-east-facing windows to filter sun. The functional design of this building organizes its resources into social, group and individual study areas and staff service areas, allowing for communication and quiet areas to coexist comfortably.

Crafton Hills College Architect: Steinberg Architects Location: Yucaipa, CA, USA The design of the LRC provides the backdrop for a truly integrated learning experience. While the entry to similar facilities is often an uninviting, double-loaded corridor, the LRC is designed to feel welcoming and promote an active learning environment. Another key element was the relocation of the main campus data center to the LRC. While this was a short-term logistical challenge, it made the LRC more adaptable to future educational innovations in and the storage and distribution of academic information. The LRC represents a new campus and community landmark that blends harmoniously with the distinctive architectural language of the campus designed by E. Stewart Williams. In doing so, the architectural team developed a vocabulary for all future buildings on campus -- sympathetic to the older campus, yet steadfastly unique. The construction team explored how to connect existing resources to allow for campus and community interaction and expose students to various programs. Tutoring spaces and library resources were combined with multimedia training facilities to enable a broad range of teaching environments. The planning team worked closely together to discuss the client's goals and needs, and translate them into architecture.

Housing educational resources with adjacent outdoor environments provide opportunities for informal learning environments and chance encounters, leading to a stronger, more fulfilling educational experience.the LRC provides a central location for all of the campus learning resources outside the classroom, including the library, the learning center for student tutoring, and the teaching and learning center for faculty. Its gallery, auditorium, and multipurpose room also serve as a magnet for campus and community programs. A variety of formal and informal learning environments enable users to study privately, in small groups, or in larger, more formal settings. The LRC hosts a broad range of community events, including: lectures, recitals, and guest speakers in the 100-seat auditorium; local arts program displays and shows in the art gallery; and, lectures, recitals, and meetings in the multipurpose room. The spatial distribution of program elements also provides unique flexibility for multi-faceted events utilizing the various spaces. For example, the outdoor patio might play host to a reception preceding a recital in the auditorium accompanied by an art exhibit or dining experience.

Karura Forest Environmental Centre The vision for the site is for "a world-class transformational education centre focusing on environmental sustainability in the region, with an emphasis on the youth." Attempting to "change attitudes towards the management and the conservation of the environment, in particular forests, and the sustainable use of natural resources through education programming," the centre will aim to "sensitize and educate people on current and emerging national and global environmental issues." Alongside educating people through training and providing a forum for educational exchange, the trust also hopes to "showcase sustainable livelihoods, green economy, green energy sources, green lifestyles." Boogertman's design incorporates a strict engagement with a sustainable use of natural resources, limiting "the development as far as is reasonable within the currently built-up area and prevent encroaching onto surrounding natural habitats. Introdution Located in the northern part of Nairobi County, bordering the Muthaiga, Gigiri and Runda residential areas, the centre will seek to educate people on the many species of plants, birds, insects and mammals to be found within Karura's diverse landscape.

Their design aims to make the centre as self sufficient as possible in the use of natural resources, such as water, and energy. Their plans also feature: A foyer that also is a space for a permanent exhibition on Karura Forest to inform people on the history and the value of Karura Forest as well as on the history of the Shell Sports Club Temporary exhibitions area on corridors or verandah and such spaces that can have interactive screens with individual controls and headsets An "e-library" to exhibit and make available the most recent publications from the main environmental and forestry stakeholders in the region and around the world An auditorium capable of accommodating around 200 persons to provide a main venue for topical presentations and debates Small conference rooms for a maximum of 20 people each to host meetings and seminars Cafeteria and eco-gift shop

BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE MASTER PLANING GUIDING PRINCIPLES 1. SIMPLICITY circulation - pedestrian footpath The paving for pedestrian walkways varies greatly throughout the campus, from concrete of different hues, to asphalt,to traditional brick. Main walkways are edged with brick pavers to highlight significant circulation paths - Concrete is durable, widely available paving material and easy to maintain. - Asphalt, does not work well as a pedestrian walkway material because it is more difficult to repair and does not maintain a neat, clean edge or consistent grade. LOCATION The three-hundred acre college is located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. in a historic, pastoral landscape with agriculture dominating the valleys and woodland in the mountains.

SITE FURNITURE - Consistency of site furnishings may seem insignificant but is also a part of what makes the campus feel cohesive. The use of the same style of site furniture throughout the campus has a visual impacton the way the campus is perceived. Covered circulation paths also provide shading through use of pergola - When placing a piece of site furniture, think about where/how they are placed in relationship to other site features like walkways, benches, building entrances. The landscape master plan attempts to address facilities, opportunitiesto while maintaining implement the desired stormwater traditional campus aesthetic. Generally, bioswales, raingardens and infiltration basins have been designed on the periphery of the campus and/or in parking lot islands inorder to preserve the conventional campus aesthetic. sustainability approach Healthy stream corridors has been introduced in the landscaping to contribute to water quality and increased wildlife habitat. Rain water is collected off of an adjacent parking lot, filtered through the raingardens before reaching a man-made lake. Built a lake, partially fed from a series of raingardens students, upstream, but also as that a acts not stormwater only as a recreational management/quality venue structure for and educational tool for the Urban Environmental Studies and Biology students. LANDSCAPE MASTER PLAN slope treatment Use of different plant material with varrying heights.

Planting plan A sketch for a new entry plaza at the University illustrates the use of colorful annuals and plantings for a significant space and entry feature. A sketch for a new entry plaza at the University illustrates the use of colorful annuals and plantings for a significant space and entry feature. Recommendations - To adopt underground storm water management at small scale with manmade ponds - To define my Entrance procession with pargolas - To define nodes of pedestrian footpaths - Adopt the concept of clear traffic and pedestrian circulations - To use plant material to shed my East and western facades of the building from the hot sun New landscape plantings was designed for to help bring the buildings into scale with the adjacent sidewalk, and provide some relief from the hardscape. - Creates consistency throughout campus - Ensures longevity - Reduce maintenance and replacement costs - Use of quality materials and materials that are appropriate for the given
