This panel brings together national, state, and local preservation leaders who have worked in public and private sector positions and partnerships to develop and implement projects and policies since the adoption of the National Historic Preservation Act and creation of the Virginia Historic Landmarks Register in As advocates and administrators in state government, historic sites, private practice, non-profit preservation organizations, boards and commissions, and other preservation-related activities, this panel represents the development of preservation in Virginia, including the expanded reach of historic preservation into open space and rural area protection, archaeological sites, and privately-financed rehabilitations made possible through state and federal tax credits as well as creative ways to document and interpret history, the natural world, and the constructed environment. Panelists include: Robert Carter, Kat Imhoff, Genevieve Keller, Hugh Miller, W. Tayloe Murphy Jr., Trip Pollard, and moderator John H. Sprinkle Jr. 12:15 pm 1:45 pm 50 for the 50 th Special Awards Luncheon Omni Hotel, James River Foyer and Salons A, B, C The conference theme Remembering the Future of the Movement provides the opportunity to look back at the people, projects, and issues that have been influential in defining the field of historic preservation in the Commonwealth. As we anticipate the 50 th anniversary of both the National Historic Preservation Act and Virginia s Historic Landmarks Register in 2016, we present a special lunchtime honor roll program called 50 for the 50 th: Celebrating 50 Years of Historic Preservation in Virginia to recognize and celebrate accomplishments in the field. Join us to reminisce and reflect during this tour of defining moments in Virginia s historic preservation movement, as selected by a jury of preservationists. 1:45 pm 2:00 pm Afternoon Break, James River Foyer 2:00 pm 4:30 pm Concurrent Afternoon Sessions Preservation Challenges and the Transformation of the Branch House into a Museum of Architecture and Design (off-site tour, bus transport provided) 2501 Monument Ave, Richmond, VA Pre-registration required, space limited to 24 participants Participants will tour the Branch House to learn its history and preservation challenges. After the tour, attendees will

engage in an interactive talk about comparative examples to the Branch House and will be given time to explore the current exhibition Balance in Motion: The Evolution of Cycling in America. Dovetail Construction s Headquarters (off-site tour, bus transport provided) 1620 Brook Rd, Richmond, VA Pre-registration required, space limited to 45 participants Tour the first building in America to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places while achieving LEED Platinum and Net Energy Zero status. Dovetail Construction Company s mission in building their award-winning headquarters, affectionately referred to as the Emerald Barn, was to be a catalyst and segue (a yellow brick road) in making Richmond an emerald city. When they saw this former electric railway car barn, originally built in 1907, in the heart of an enterprise zone, they decided to begin a journey to have it listed on the National Register of Historic Places, register it as a proposed LEED platinum project, and find a way to make it a net-zero energy solar powered commercial office that was both inspirational and compelling. Footprints of the Slave Trade: Walking Through a Way of Life in Shockoe Bottom (off-site walking tour) Depart Omni Hotel; pre-registration required Join Ana Edwards to walk the footprints of the trade in enslaved Africans in Richmond's oldest neighborhood, Shockoe Bottom, from the city's founding in 1737 through the height of its role as the largest domestic slave trading site in the country (aside from New Orleans) and explore the personal and societal conflicts of living enslaved in the "Land of the Free." Preserving Virginia: The Future of History Documentary Film Screening Omni Hotel, James River Salon D Join Preservation Virginia staff and board members for an open discussion about historic preservation in Virginia as it is being practiced in the 21 st century. Explore recent case studies from around the Commonwealth following the presentation of Preserving Virginia: The Future of History and the tobacco barn-focused short film A Good Hat and a Good Set of Boots.

5:00 pm 7:00 pm Evening Networking Reception and Preservation Pitch Contest Omni Hotel, James River Foyer Tuesday, October 20 Virginia Preservation Conference, cont d 7:15 am 8:30 am Morning Walk along Richmond s Low Line (Optional) Depart Omni Hotel; walk is approx. 3 miles roundtrip Please join members of Capital Trees, a local non-profit focusing on urban greening initiatives, for a walking tour of their latest project, the Low Line. The Low Line is a planned linear park that will rehabilitate 5.5-acres of derelict property on the banks directly on the historic Kanawah Canal and adjacent to the James River. It includes the western trailhead of the Virginia Capital Trail, and has important historic, environmental, social, and economic development attributes. Reclamation of this property has already begun and when complete the site will be cleared and planted to serve as a great riparian buffer along the sensitive James River watershed, including storm water mitigation amenities, native plants, and pollinators. 8:00 am 9:00 am Continental Breakfast Omni Hotel, James River Foyer 9:00 am 10:15 am Plenary Session Keynote Speaker Omni Hotel, James River Salons A, B, C Stephen P. Nash, University of Richmond, journalist and author of Virginia Climate Fever In his keynote, Nash will introduce the topic of sea level rise as part of a larger discussion of climate change. Nash's presentation will summarize what scientists are telling us about the near-term impact of global warming on Virginia temperatures, rainfall, and especially sea level. A combination of research data from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and the Department of Historic Preservation provides an overview of potential impacts on coastal historic and archaeological sites, physical strategies for adapting to sea level rise, and a speculative approach to keeping the preservation of cultural resources on Virginia's climate policy agenda. The key question to ask is why and how this issue matters for historic preservation in America and, more specifically, Virginia. 10:15 am 10:30 am Mid-morning Break, James River Foyer

10:30 am 12:00 pm Addressing Climate Threats to the Commonwealth s Historic and Natural Resources Moderated panel discussion (continuation of plenary opening session) Omni Hotel, James River Salons A, B, C This discussion will begin to identify the impacts of a changing climate on Virginia s historic resources and to explore current discussions of how we can adapt to these changes, including innovative solutions that are being developed to protect the resources of which we are stewards. The discussion may address such topics as what we do to reduce emissions and the consideration of approaches like energy efficiency, renewable energy, and cleaner transportation options. It is expected that the interactive discussion will yield a set of questions and identify Virginia-specific issues that may be explored in greater depth at future conferences and symposia. Panelists include: Amanda E. Ciampolillo, Shereen Hughes, Stephen P. Nash, Matthew Pelz, Jim Redick, Nikki Rovner, and Danny Schmidt. 12:15 pm 1:45 pm Plenary Lunchtime Speaker Session Omni Hotel, James River Foyer and Salons A, B, C The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience and the Evolution of Interpretation Speakers include: Sarah Pharaon, Senior Director, Methodology and Practice with the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, and Jennifer Hurst-Wender, Director of Museum Operations and Education with Preservation Virginia This lunchtime talk will speak to the changing nature of interpretation over time, using the Sites of Conscience approach as practiced at several Virginia sites. Sarah Pharaon will introduce the Coalition and speak to ways that the future of heritage tourism is directly tied to maintaining relevancy for 21 st century audiences. Historic sites are places of memory that inspire visitors long after their tour s conclusion. Historic sites across the state are broadening their interpretation to include once-untold histories. These historic places of memory were saved for a reason- whether for name association or the value of the place- as a reminder of what makes us human. Preservation Virginia and the International Coalition of the Sites of Conscience have worked together and continue to identify and bring these connections from our past into the

present and to engage people in civic discourse as a way to help shape the future through knowledge and understanding. Richmond s Shockoe Bottom, mainly an archaeological site located beneath pavement, will be discussed as a Site of Conscience. The session will address the myriad ways that the incorporation of the Sites of Conscience approach is influencing interpretation at sites and in advocacy work in Virginia and beyond. 1:45 pm 2:00 pm Afternoon Break, James River Foyer 2:00 pm 4:30 pm Concurrent Afternoon Sessions Scott s Addition neighborhood walking tour (off-site tour with the Valentine Museum with a stop at a local brewery, bus transport provided) Depart Omni Hotel; pre-registration required, space is limited to 24 participants Named for General Winfield Scott, this early 20 th -century commercial and industrial area contains what is perhaps Richmond's best selection of Art Deco and Moderne commercial architecture. Today it is a thriving business, residential, and entertainment district. Scott s Addition neighborhood is experiencing a tremendous renaissance and is widely considered the fastest growing neighborhood in the City of Richmond. It is home to more than 1,000 new apartments that have already been incorporated into historic warehouses and other buildings, as well as restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, and a number of attractions. Richmond s Quirk Hotel (off-site tour, bus transport provided) Depart Omni Hotel; pre-registration required, space is limited to 45 participants Opening in September 2015, the Quirk Hotel s 201 W. Broad Street main building, built in 1916, was once a department store. It has been converted into a 75-room boutique hotel using historic tax credits to offset the cost of renovations. Join Ted Ukrop for an in-depth look at Richmond s newest hotel, another example of Broad Street s revitalization. Monumental Church Tour and the Evolution of Architectural Recordation Practices (off-site tour, bus transport provided) Depart Omni Hotel; pre-registration required, space is limited to 45 participants

Located at 1224 E. Broad Street, Monumental Church was built in and is now owned and operated by Historic Richmond. Join speakers Hunter McGuire III and F. Scott Reed of Prologue Systems on a tour of one of Richmond's most significant buildings and learn how 3D laser scans are being used as preservation tools, not just in archiving the architecture, but in facility assessments, building analysis, and project management.
