34 THE BRAY FAMILY When my wife and I decided to move forward with the new construction of a pool in our backyard we went through the decision-making process of which landscaping company to go with to compliment this major project. We interviewed several landscaping companies stretching from West Michigan to the Lansing area. Most of these companies had very similar designs, plantings and materials. There was one exception though, and that was when we met Brent Diemer with Everett s. From our initial consultation meeting it was obvious that he listened to what we wanted and what was important to us in this project. We wanted something that wasn t like the typical pool project. We wanted the landscaping to be just as important as the design and layout of the pool. They treated our home and this project as if it were their own. They not only cleaned up every day after their own work, but many times even after other subcontractors on site. This gives us the ability to provide new and interesting plants for our customers. Many nurseries buy and sell within a season to keep their inventory depleted. Our approach is different in that we are also a growing nursery. This allows us to stock our nursery with quality, healthy plants and trees at varying levels of maturity. Take a walk through our nursery and you will see shade trees from liners up to 6 caliper, evergreen trees from 3 to 20 plus in height, and a very large selection of Japanese Maples ranging from 3 to 20 plus in height. 37 Our nursery is managed with minimal chemical use. We believe if you start with the right plant and promote health and vigor the way plants naturally grow, you will have a plant or landscape that is capable of sustaining itself. This concept brings us back full circle to the importance of plant selection and management from the beginning. Our nursery is inspected each year by the Michigan Department of Agriculture. We continue to receive top marks each year. We may not have the newest introductions you see in magazines and online. The reason is we want to know plants are proven hardy to our climate before we offer them to our customers. We are not fans of the one hit wonders in the plant world. We like to test and grow these plants for a few seasons before offering them to our customers. This ensures that our customers receive the best possible plants for their landscape.
