2 General Information Registration Information When and Where: This two day regional Technical Seminar will be on W ednesday and Thursday March 3-4, 2010 at the Providence Marriott Downtown Hotel in Providence, Rhode Island. Course Objectives: The objective of the technical seminar is threefold. The first objective is to advance awareness of private engineers and consultants, dam safety engineers and inspectors, dam owners and developers of residential communities about the nature and seriousness of problems associated with plant and animal penetrations of earthen dams. The second objective is to provide a better understanding of plant and animal penetration problems, to present current local and regional policies on plant and animal damage control, and to present state-of-practice procedures and techniques for management and control of plant and animal penetrations. The third objective is to provide state-ofpractice guidance for remedial repair design of earthen dams and their appurtenances affected by plant and animal penetration p. Course Manual: Participants will be provided with two FEMA technical manuals and a CD containing a copy of the entire seminar presentation. Registration Fees: Fees prior to February 16 are $350 for ASDSO members and $450 for non-members. A late fee of $25 applies to registrations received after February 16. Registration fees include all course materials, daily continental breakfasts and coffee breaks. NOTE: State dam safety of ficials are eligible for FREE registration, however advance registration is required. Your participation in this survey will help us ef ficiently tailor the seminar to t he needs of the attendees. About the Instructor The seminar will be presented by Dr. B. Dan Marks, P.E., of Marks Enterprises of NC, PLLC in Arden, North Carolina. Marks Enterprises is a geotechnical engineering design firm specializing in dam engineering/design, slope stability and retaining walls analyses/design, special foundations system engineering/design, and dam safety and geotechnical engineering education. Dr. Marks received his Ph. D. in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering at Oklahoma S tate University in

3 Dr. Marks t aught courses in geotechnical engineering, materials engineering, and engineering geology in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee from 1970 to He supervised over twenty masters degree candidates and was promoted to a tenured-full professor of Civil Engineering in In 1980 Dr. Marks joined the geotechnical engineering firm of S&ME, Inc. in Raleigh, North Carolina as Chief Geotechnical Engineer. Dr. Marks was project engineer on over 6000 projects including over 200 dam projects at S&ME, Inc. during his employment as Chief Geotechnical Engineer and V ice-president from April 1980 through September In 2000 Dr. Marks founded Marks Enterprises in Arden, North Carolina to provide specialized geotechnical and dam engineering/design/education services. Dr. Marks has been a consult ant to ASDSO since 2000 and has taught numerous seminars and workshops on technical issues associated with dam ownership and dam safety engineering. Dr. Marks will be assisted in prep aration and present ation of the seminar by Jonathan D. Ogle, CAD Manager and Computer Technologist for Marks Enterprises.
