4 TISZA RIVER FLOODPLAIN INTEGRATED FLOODPLAIN MANAGEMENT Improving management of 1,600 km2 Influencing an estimated area of 9,400km2 Objectives: Integrated and sustainable management of land, water, habitats and biodiversity that support the socio-economic development Building environmental capacity at the local level Building institutional capacity at the local level Protecting towns and villages Hungary is planning to use farmland to hold up to a billion cubic meters of water to prevent flooding elsewhere. The Hungarian government will create a dozen of reservoirs on farmland near the Tisza that will be allowed to flood.

7 ROTTERDAM CLIMATE INITIATIVE Integrated Approach Its ambitions projects in the fields of the environment, climate, energy and water contribute to a green, clean, healthy and economically strong city and make Rotterdam the most sustainable world port. The city, port and municipality are working together with companies, citizens and knowledge institutions in order to achieve this together, focusing on decisiveness, innovation and cocreation

8 Water Plaza ROTTERDAM IS DESIGNING FOR FUTURE Planned and designed to deliberately allow flooding. On heavy rain days Plaza functions as a reservoir relieving pressure on a surrounding drainage system. Floating buildings Climate proof buildings: as the sea level rises, the floating spheres rise accordingly. The first three pavilions are already in place, while the floating urban district in Stadhavens is planned to be completed by The buildings will use solar energy and will be energy self sufficient. They are targeted to meet the 50% CO2 reduction. A number of sustainability requirements will be met, regarding waste water, choice of construction materials, etc.

23 DOING BETTER-WORKING SMARTER Upgrading planning methodology by introducing new methods and techniques Evaluation criteria and adaptation criteria and measures are based on social, economic, climate change and environmental factors Recognizing that creative thinking is a serious input to any planning exercise: creative thinking does not relate to planning solutions, it embraces methods, techniques and instruments ICIA integrated Climate Impact Assessment specifically designed for urban planning purposes. ICIA should be a compulsory requirement fully integrated in the planning procedures.
