3 Background 2014 marking the 22 nd Anniversary of Agenda 21, a global blueprint of sustainable development concluded at the Rio Earth Summit, 1992 It has been 14 years ( ) for Local Agenda 21 implementation in Malaysia Where are we now? What are the new challenges for cities? What other cities Worldwide have been doing?

6 Where are we now after 21 years? 32 of 154 (21%) LA with the 2013 Sustainable Cities Award for implementing MURNINET Attendees from LA to Rio+20 & pre / post Rio+20 forum in Malaysia? LA 21: Sustainable Development & Participation NO formal institutionalization of LA 21 No amendment of legislations to facilitate LA 21 implementation at local level No specific 4M (Manpower; Money; Methods; Machinery) Chief Minister of Selangor in his opening remark for a TOD Conference in PJ on quoted that even HOD did not know about LA 21 Manual Implementing LA 21 in Malaysia published in 2003 is not taken as reference?

16 Concluding Remarks Successes Partnership should and be participation celebrated of and all shared, BUT best stakeholders practices must and MBPJ be sustained, must be enhanced replicated for and improved a Low Carbon Green City of Petaling Jaya Challenges Roles of NGOs should including be taken Rotary with integrated Club of PJ is FUTURE important solutions, Global Thinking and Local Actions Opportunities are plenty but need Innovation and Creativity as well as commitment from LA
