1 MSc1 A Hotel & Museum for the American Embassy Wouter Willers Code AR1AR011 Credits 12 ECTS Location Den Haag In 1959 the American Embassy was built on the location of the old Hotel Paulez on the corner of the Korte Voorhout and the Lange Voorhout in The Hague. Marcel Breuer was responsible for the design of the Embassy building. The plot contains an inner garden with auditorium and two building volumes with an entrance on both streets. The plot of the American Embassy was well protected but has now become vacant. This is now an opportunity to bring a new liveliness to this entrance of the inner city. Making a public building to attract people, creating a vibrant new space on the border of the inner city is the aim. The program to renew the building of the American Embassy will be a hotel and the permanent location for the Escher Museum. Researching possibilities to create a strong relation with the surroundings and change both volumes in two different ways for those two different functions is the challenge. 2 Heritage & Architecture MSc1 Living and Working in a Former Ammunition Factory TBA Code Credits Location Excursion Costs AR1AR ECTS Hembrug Yes - The Hembrug area, between Amsterdam and Zaandam, is a unique landscape filled with monuments. The former military site is at the moment one of the biggest locations of redevelopment in The Netherlands and can be described as factories in the woods. It fits in the row of redevelopment of industrial areas next to the North Sea Channel starting with the NDSM Warf and Houthavens in Amsterdam. The area has been in use since 1895 and has always been used for the production of ammunition. Since the development of the site took more than hundred years, different architectural styles are recognizable. A special and attractive work- and residential neighbourhood with a green heart and with a prominent role for monuments will be developed in the Hembrug area. The studio project will focus and work on The Cathedral, a building ensemble almost in the middle of the area. Students will research what it means to live and work in an old industrial area. 3 MSc1 Ljubljana, Emil Navinšek s school buildings Nol Hermkens Code Credits Location Excursion Costs AR1AR ECTS Ljubljana Yes 500 approx. Between 1936 and 1964 Emil Navinšek realized 38 standardized corridor-free school buildings in Slovenia. These buildings were all based on Modern Movement ideals such as social justice, experiment, prefabrication, rationalization, as well as new standards in daylight, ventilation and hygiene. The buildings as a series are architectural representatives of Socialistic Modernism. The school buildings have been in continuous use for more than half a century. Many of the schools were extended or altered independently in various ways. However, such interventions were not coordinated, and solutions varied from building to building, in spite of Emil Navinšek s systematic approach to design the school buildings originally. The design assignment in this project will focus on the use of generic structures as a design tool, and to propose sustainable interventions and extensions for these buildings respecting the architectural and cultural values. Preceding to the project the group will join the obligatory 5-day DOCOMOMO workshop in Ljubljana from 24 to 28 August See also docomomo2018.si/index.php/studentworkshop AR1AR010-3 ects Methodologies of Architectural Reuse AR1AR080-3 ects Technology of Conservation
4 Heritage & Architecture MSc3/4 Revitalising Heritage: Retreat Estates Hielkje Zijlstra Wido Quist Sara Stroux Code Credits Location Excursion Costs AR3AH ECTS Delft & Reuverweerd Yes - This studio combines a Living lab location of the KaDEr Gelderland research project and an actual case at the TU Delft campus. The estate Reuversweerd in Brummen will be converted in a conference and retreat centre for groups of persons with all-inclusive facilities on 5 star level. It includes the main house, stables, a farm and a park. The Hammen farm at the Rotterdamseweg in Delft will be in the centre of the campus-west developments and it is suggested to convert it into the TU Delft Faculty Club. After and during worktime guests of TU Delft can have conversations, workshops, lunch and diners in a historical surrounding including high tech facilities. Both locations ask for a challenging and sustainable approach to balance historical qualities with technological innovations to welcome guests in a special way you create. You get the opportunity to collaborate with stakeholders in both projects. This project is about interior, exterior, gardens, conservation, redesign and innovations. 5 MSc3/4 Revitalising Heritage: Hembrug district Alexander de Ridder Code AR3AH110 Credits 15 ECTS Location Zaandam There is a large scale redevelopment going on Zaandam, fuelled by its proximity to Amsterdam. Next to the bank of the Noordzeekanaal a number of new districts will be created. One of the them, the Hembrug area, has been a military base for a long time and has now become vacant. The green location has the atmosphere of a campus with numerous historical buildings, the area will be densified with new dwellings and enterprises. The new development follows other contemporary developments in the North of Amsterdam such as the NDSM Werf and Houthavens. The focus of the graduation project is how contemporary and future demands for a prosperous city life can be translated into appropriate interventions. How existing physical structures and new design layers can reinforce each other creating an attractive living and working environment. Choosing a building ensemble on the site and developing a specific program is part of the assignment. Understanding the existing site through research is a prerequisite for any proposal. How can the past be an inspirational tool for the future? AR3AR022-3 ects Cultural History Essential Qualities AR3AR032-3 ects Analysis of building & material structures AR3AR142-3 ects Architectural analysis of buildings & urban context
6 MSc3/4 Adapting 20 C Heritage: Flevopolder Lidwine Spoormans Code AR3AH100 Credits 15 ECTS Location Flevoland In the first half of the 20th century, the Dutch created Flevoland. The Netherlands youngest province is usually associated with new, innovative and no history, however, since the first inhabitants settled there 75 years ago, more than 400,000 have followed. The land of engineering, ideals and future, now has its own history and needs to start relating to the built heritage, as a tangible expression of its exceptional past. The social composition of neighbourhoods, educational concepts, infrastructural systems, housing typologies, agricultural methods, soil quality, building methods: everything was designed on this new artificial land. State of the art projects from this past can be studied as the laboratory of modern developments of The Netherlands. Flevoland still remains a breeding ground for architectural experimentation through such projects such as Oosterwold by MVRDV. But new challenges in the province confront us with questions around its transformation. Which experiments from the past prooved to be successful and how do we deal with failures? Is the narrative of new land and innovation the cultural historical value or should we protect architectural and urban products as monuments? In this studio, we will study heritage and future challenges of several locations of Flevoland, each with its specific contemporary needs. After an in-depth analysis, students will work on a relevant design brief, programmatic scenarios and create a proposal. Heritage centre Batavialand, the municipalities of Almere, Lelystad and Noordoostpolder and other experts are involved in the organisation of the studios. AR3AR022-3 ects Cultural History Essential Qualities AR3AR032-3 ects Analysis of building & material structures AR3AR142-3 ects Architectural analysis of buildings & urban context
7 MSc3/4 Adapting 20 C Heritage: Bandung Job Roos Code AR3AH100 Credits 15 ECTS Location Bandung Studio Bandung, is a collabaration with Heritage & Architecture, Architectural Engineering and Urbanism, between TU Delft and ITB Bandung. As a result of long time colonization by the Dutch, Indonesia has many Dutch-Indonesian heritage sites and buildings. They are part of both Dutch and Indonesian history and have become part of the expanding cities and changing landscape of modern day Indonesia. The question for architects and urban planners in Indonesia today is how to preserve and develop heritage sites and buildings, how to give them a new meaning and use. The proposed education and research programme focusses on the exchange of knowledge and skills between Dutch and Indonesian students and researchers to sustainably deal with the many Dutch-Indonesian heritage sites in Indonesia. The graduation studio focusses on the topic of industrial and plantation heritage in and around Bandung (West Java, Indonesia). Because of its moderate climate and its fertile surrounding mountains and many fresh rivers, the region of Bandung has been developed by the Dutch colonial government as a plantation area for many kinds of cash crops, such as tea, coffee, tobacco, cacoa and quinine. At the start of the 20th century also the first textile factories were opened. Industrial buildings and infrastructure supported the plantations and strongly connected the region of Bandung with global trade and economy. The topic of industrial and plantation heritage contains many interesting layers for Dutch and Indonesian students to discuss and study together. It not only questions industrial heritage buildings as objects, but also how the Dutch colony functioned and how it developed on the back of a very fertile region. How to redesign and redevelop the industrial heritage buildings and plantation landscapes in such a way that they become valuable again for Bandung and its communities?
