Graduation Plan Master of Science Architecture, Urbanism & Building Sciences
Graduation Plan: All tracks The graduation plan consists of at least the following data/segments: Personal information Name Maurits Verhoeff Student number Telephone number Private address Studio Name / Theme Teachers / tutors Argumentation of choice of the studio Dutch Housing Graduation Studio Birgit Jürgenhake, Theo Kupers Within the realm of architecture I m particularly interested in dwelling because it affects the users in the most direct manner. The quality and properties of the dwelling have a direct influence on their lifestyle and quality of life. The dwelling should always cater the dweller and his lifestyle, but that is simply not always the case. Especially in today s society where everything grows and changes more rapidly, dwellings and specific forms of living become more important. Graduation project Title of the graduation project Goal Location: The posed problem, Something for every ONE. Oostenburgereiland, Amsterdam In Amsterdam, as in many other big cities around the world, there is a growing group of dwellers which cannot find the appropriate dwellings for their lifestyle. This growing group consist of single dwellers; people who either chose or are destined to live alone, and therefore have different needs for housing. Oostenburgereiland, which is currently open for redevelopment, should play a key role in providing the suitable living environment for this growing group of single dwellers. Oostenburgereiland is one of the three eastern island in Amsterdam, created in the 17 th century. It is a special place
since it is one of the last open plots in the city, ready to be fully redeveloped into an area with a lively mix of working and living. Unique about the island is the strong industrial character combined with the existing buildings, with each having a length well over 150m, lack any form of human sale or relations to the idea of dwellings. However, the municipality has strong ideas for redeveloping this island into a dynamic and innovative part of the city full of activities and riddled with the entrepreneurial mindset. The idea for redeveloping Oostenburgereiland is a form of slow urbanism without a fixed final image. The current and future demand determine how the framework is filled. The question then arises what this current demand is how it should be designed for a place which has a yet undefined future. Problem: Society related: There is currently a growing group of single dwellers and a lack of appropriate dwellings for this group. Site related: Oostenburgereiland is a location with a high potential because of the plan for full redevelopment. There is a demand for a lively mix of living and working, yet the slow urbanism comes with a very uncertain future and final picture. research questions and In what way can architecture, respond and fulfill the current need of this growing group of single dwellers and simultaneously, add to the required lively mix of the redeveloping site, while foreseeing the idea for future changes and dynamics? - Who is this growing group of single urban dwellers? - What is the lifestyle of these single dwellers?
- What element and factors in architecture can respond to their specific needs? - What architectural elements and/or factors can fulfill the current needs while being responsive to possible changes? design assignment in which these result. A housing program which responds to the current needs of this growing group of single dwellers, whilst being open to changes, and in that way reacting to the uncertain/everchanging/developing/dynamic nature of the site. The needs of the dwellers should be researched and answered in the best possible way. Process Method description Site analysis: Thorough analysis conducted in different themes: Historical Context; Site Morphology; Infrastructure and Accessibility; Architecture; Activity and Use; Material and Legacy; Climate; Socioeconomic Factors. Urban analysis: Additional comparable research into precedents: Borneo Sporenburg; Hamburg Hafencity; Western Harbour; Urhahn urban plan for Oostenburgereiland. Thematic research: Researching the growing group of single person households by collecting relevant articles and profiling their lifestyles and needs. Simultaneously analyzing four built case studies of single person household projects. Combining the data from both researches into Test Cases where we place our single dweller profile into a project for single dwellers and research the way architectural elements and factors respond to their lifestyle, gaining valuable insight for our design assignment. Design research: Using the products from the site, urban and theme researches into propositions and design models for the site. Different models will be tested and proposed along an bigger concept and idea for the housing program. Additional research into flexible housing typologies will be conducted to find solutions that offer possibilities for a diverse or changing housing program.

Reflection Relevance The graduation project engages on the current mismatch between the growing groups of single dwellers and the housing market. It attempts to find solutions to create the best possible housing for this current group and keeps in mind the dynamic nature of the site. In a broader sense it questions the current way of separate living and suggests forms or dynamic smaller collective living which have a smaller effect of the built environment.
