2 Graduation Plan: All tracks The graduation plan consists of at least the following data/segments: Personal information Name Annemiek Visser Student number Telephone number Private address Studio Name / Theme Teachers / tutors Argumentation of choice of the studio Graduation project Title of the graduation project Goal Location: The posed problem, research questions and The Architecture of the Interior M. Stuhlmacher, L. Willers, A. Fonteyne The challenge to make a design that responds to the needs of people with dementia and that both triggers them in a positive way and adds quality to their life, while they re now mostly accommodated in practical and functional environments. The Healthy environment Rotterdam The isolation of people suffering from dementia from both the physical outdoor world and the non-dementia people living there. What influence do design elements have on the level of interaction in collective gardens? design assignment in which these result. The insertion of a dementia care center inside a not well functioning collective garden of an existing enclosed building block in the northern district of Rotterdam, in which the connection between dementia people and the outside space and the interaction between the patients and non-dementia people will be the central themes. The creation of several collective gardens between the existing structure (in which the non-dementia people will live) and the new care center should both serve as a safe enclosed outside environment for the people with dementia and should at the same time facilitate the interaction between the different target groups that live around the concerned gardens. The research on the collective gardens will help in
3 designing these gardens in such a way that this interaction and collectivity can be achieved. Process Method description For the research hand-drawings based on observations and interviews will be used to show the design and use of the four collective gardens that will be inquired. Also for the analysis of the research hand-drawings will be used. For the design case studies are first of all important to get an overview of the different possibilities and qualities of several projects. These case studies and the analysis of the location will play an important role in my eventual own design. Mass models and drawings will be used to test typologies, concepts and floorplans. For the interior bigger scale models (1:50 and 1:20) and drawings will be used to test the relationship between inside and outside. Literature and general practical preference Literature: Berg, A. The Lancet Neurology, 3(6), Olde Loohuis, R., Morijn, T., Buuren, M. van, Böhmer, N., Zuur, V., & Egmond, A. van. (2002). Stalenboek: Een inspiratiebron voor het inrichten van collectieve tuinen. Velp: Hogeschool Larenstein. Reference projects: The hogewey in Weesp Kloosterhof Pamele in Oudenaarde Care Home Vijvens Huise-Zingem Reflection Relevance - DvA - NoAa - Sergion Bates Nowadays, the fact that people with dementia are often accommodated in practical and functional environments which are not well enough connected with the outdoor world is a big problem, because this only leads to the worsening of their physical and mental state. It is therefore necessary to change this situation by designing living environments that respond to their specific needs and trigger them in a positive way. The improvement of the connection with gardens and normal people are important aspects in this. However, many collective gardens are nowadays also failing in serving their purpose, actually connecting people by shaping a communal outdoor space. It appeared that
4 there are documents written about collective gardens and how to design them, but these rules don t have a solid basis, since no attention is given to the outcome and many gardens fail in being collective. Therefore, it is very valuable to inquire collective gardens to find out what elements stimulate people to participate and interact with each other in the gardens and what elements or aspects obstruct this.
