2 CDE Studio SQUEEZE will search for radical new proposals for mediumdensity residential developments in the inner fringe of Melbourne. Only few projects currently fill the gap in the market between high rise residential towers and the single (or double) storey terrace typology. Those projects that get realised often fail to promote placemaking and the establishment of a strong identity.. STUDIO 10

3 Within the 13 week semester we will question this mainly market driven approach and put strong emphasis on exploring residential (and mixed use) building typologies that foster social interaction as well as a bespoke response to the prevailing local environmental conditions (orientation/sun/wind/daylight/...) Using high end technology to test different morphological configurations, students will advance their projects with building performance and associated analysis in mind. of rentable floor space takes priority. 4 Learning Outcomes: Students delve deeply into the design of medium density housing precinct with great sensitivity towards the surrounding urban context. Students will learn how to use digital tools to analyse key environmental factors that influence their project s typology and ultimately impacts on the layout of each residential unit. They will learn how to advance their design thinking with multiple performance criteria in mind. In class we will discuss optimisation techniques and their interface with geometry manipulation. STUDIO 10

5 Process: The semester will kick off with group research about the site, its urban context, and mixed use options for its development. Digital tools and associated tool ecologies will be introduced that help to analyse the environmental factors that impact on the project s morphology. Following an intensive workshop in week 4 students will individually develop speculative responses to the design challenges at hand. STUDIO 10

6 Plan Melbourne: All structure plans and housing strategies (already approved and yet to be done) will need to demonstrate how they will deliver a greater diversity of housing, attract more jobs and help deliver the 20 minute neighbourhood. Other areas for consideration may include areas within established suburbs where the housing stock is reaching the end of its life and is ready for redevelopment as medium density housing, and areas around railway stations, public transport interchanges and some public transport corridors.
