8 Florida Green Building Coalition s (FGBC) Green Development Guidelines, serving as a primary reviewer of the FGBC s original and current planning and design standards for sustainable land development practices (2005). In Florida, Mr. Acomb has focused on green infrastructure applications of water conservation including green roofs and low impact development site solutions. From , he served as Co-Principal Investigator with Dr. David Prevatt, P. E., through UF College of Engineering grants from FEMA and the Florida Building Commission to measure wind uplift effects (up to hurricane force winds) upon green roof assemblies (both built-in-place and tray system assemblies). Full-scale green roof assemblies were tested utilizing the University s Hurricane Simulator in successive wind speeds up to 120 mph. The results of the research has been submitted to the Florida Building Commission in order to allow consideration for code guidelines for green roofs in Florida. In the spring of 2011, Mr. Acomb was awarded the FRSA/Earl Blank Fellowship for architectural study in roofing technology to integrate his green roof technology into an online course for campus-wide enrollment. In 2009, he co-authored The Florida Field Guide to Low Impact Development with Dr. Mark Clark (University of Florida Assistant Professor in Soil & Water Science Department), comprehensive technical resource and guide to the design and management of LID tools for Florida. The publisher is the Program for Resource Efficient Communities, an IFASbased research consortium co-founded by Mr. Acomb. In 2006, he co-designed and oversaw installation (in 2007) of the University of Florida s first green roof project, the Charles R. Perry Construction Yard Green Roof, located adjacent to Rinker Hall. This 2,600 square foot roof harvests rainwater through two 1,550 sq. ft. cisterns, making that available to irrigate the landscape. The plant material consists of primarily native plants that will provide for an expanded plant palette for future green roof projects in Florida. In addition to his technical assistance, Glenn raised $25,500 to fund the green roof (the majority of funding through a grant from the Florida DOT). He continues to research in the area of green roof technology with a focus on plant selections, media composition and maintenance guidelines. In 2003, Mr. Acomb co-founded The Program for Resource Efficient Communities (PREC), a multi-disciplined research consortium of University Florida faculty, Dr. Pierce Jones (Energy Extension), Dr. Michael Dukes (Agricultural & Biological Engineering) and Dr. Mark Hostetler (Wildlife Ecology). PREC undertakes research, provides project review and technical assistance to property owners, and offers education for municipalities and developers in sustainable design and land development. As a principal researcher for PREC in , he designed the site improvements for the Model Center for Madera and related open space improvements for this 88-lot, model green AY

9 subdivision located in Gainesville. Madera has been nationally recognized as a model sustainable community with emphasis on collected performance data on the various LID design techniques employed. His work on Madera has been presented at two international conferences, GreenBuild and RSC 06, at numerous national and state conferences, and his article, LID vs. Conventional Site Design: The Madera Case Study was published in Land Development Magazine, published by the National Association of Home Builders. Madera is visited frequently by design professionals throughout the State, municipal staff and elected officials, as well as serves as a teaching tool for IFAS Extension In-Service training, St. Johns River Water Management District, Alachua County, and for numerous courses within UF s College of Design, Construction and Planning. His work with PREC has supported 3 students, one with a funded assistantship. In 2002, he served as an original member of the College of Design, Construction & Planning s Sustainability and Smart Growth Committee (2002). In 2003, he partnered with the Greening UF Committee to create the biweekly, University-wide Conversations in Sustainability, a forum that discussed sustainability on the campus and in the community. In the spring of 2004, he served as part of the faculty for a course in sustainability in the University s Honors Program. He also serves as topical lecturer for other courses in the College. In 2006, he served on the Steering Committee for a new UF undergraduate degree program in sustainability, the Bachelor of Science in Sustainability in the Built Environment (BSSBE) and continues to serve on the Governing Board for this program. B. Water Conservation in the Landscape. The balancing of the demands for Florida s water resources with environmental protection has become one of Florida s most critical issues for the coming years. Currently, Glenn serves on the Environmental Protection Agency s (EPA) national stakeholder group to create guidelines for new home construction and creation of the new WaterSense brand for water conservation appliances, design and construction practices. The work in the Madera project has been instrumental in understanding the performance of best management/design practices at the lot and community design level. Further, he co-wrote the certification criteria for the IFAS Energy Extension Service s Water Star certification for landscape improvements as a part of IFAS training, has served as lecturer for Water Star training (for extension agents and water management staff), and as faculty for inservice training for the Florida Yards & Neighborhoods Extension Staff (University of Florida). From , Mr. Acomb served as consultant to the St. Johns River Water Management District to design water conservation demonstration landscapes in partnership with private property owners and cities to advise the District in areas of water conservation in the landscape. During that time, he has designed a variety of landscapes in Marion County, Lake County, St. Johns and Alachua County. A majority of these have been residential single-family homes. His research on the Madera project has focused on the documentation of the performance of site design techniques resulting in water conservation in a way that is made available to the public, the design and construction communities and to regulatory entities. Measuring water conservation practices in the landscape will take place through the Madera project, the 88-lot AY

10 demonstration subdivision that is a partnership of the University of Florida Energy Extension Office and the developer. Through the Madera project, data has been collected regarding capital costs and life-cycle costs for a variety of construction areas including landscaping, turf improvements, irrigation improvements, site stormwater management, permeable pavement, and roof stormwater collection and infiltration. C. Construction Education and Licensure. Mr. Acomb has been devoted to site design and construction as the lead faculty member in construction education. In 2007, he wrote LARE Review: Mastering Section C: Planning and Design, published by Professional Publications, Inc., the leading publisher of licensure preparation books. Section C of the LARE is the most rigorous subject area of the licensure exam and has been acclaimed and one of the most useful and needed books by LARE applicants. In addition, he regularly serves as instructor for the Florida Chapter ASLA s 3-day LARE Preparation course, serving as co-coordinator for the past 3 years. The course draws attendees Statewide each year and serves as a comprehensive preparation for the national exam.
