AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION Summarized below are the three areas of specialization of Mr. Acomb s research and service activities: Sustainable Site Design and Land Development Mr. Acomb is a national leader in the field of sustainability site design. He had served on numerous national committees and industry task forces to prepare guidelines for sustainable sites, including agencies such as the EPA s National Stakeholder Group to Review Water Conservation Guidelines for New Home Construction (2006-present). He represents the profession on the national committee to create the WaterSense brand for water conservation and develop national guidelines for site design, including landscape and irrigation design. NAHB National Green Design Guidelines ( ). Glenn represented the profession of landscape architecture in the creation of Green Design Guidelines for the National Association of Home Builders. The Guidelines were published in LEED Sustainable Sites Category Proposal (2005-present). Glenn was asked to present a summary of site design research at the first ASLA Austin Summit, a national meeting of experts to discuss the preparation of a proposal to the USGBC for a LEED Sustainable Sites Category. Since that time the proposal has moved forward and hi has co-presented the status report at the 2006 ASLA Annual Meeting. In addition, he co-founded a multi-disciplined research consortium of University Florida faculty, the Program for Resource Efficient Communities (PREC), providing research and technical assistance to property owners, municipalities and developers in sustainable design and land development. As a principal researcher for PREC, he designed the site improvements for the Model Center for Madera, an 88-lot, model green subdivision located in Gainesville. He is currently involved in the design of the University of Florida s first green roof, the Perry Construction Yard project, located adjacent to Rinker Hall. This 2,600 square foot roof will harvest rainwater through two 1,550 sq. ft. cisterns, making that available to irrigate the landscape. In 1
2 addition to his technical assistance, Glenn raised $25,500 to fund the green roof (the majority of funding through a grant from the Florida DOT). Over the past 7 years, he has presented papers and made presentations on site sustainability to 6 national conferences, 13 state conferences and countless other workshops and seminars at the county level. He regularly is invited to serve on the faculty of IFAS in-service training for extension staff, and has contributed to numerous guidelines involving site design considerations. Water Conservation in the Landscape From , Mr. Acomb served as the consultant to the St. Johns River Water Management District to design water conservation demonstration landscapes in partnership with private property owners and cities as well as to advise the District in areas of water conservation in the landscape. During that time, he has designed a variety of landscapes in Marion County, Lake County, St. Johns and Alachua County. A. Sustainable Site Design and Land Development. Mr. Acomb is extremely active in the field of site sustainability. As an original member of the College of Design, Construction & Planning s Sustainability and Smart Growth Committee (2002), he continues to serve on the College s Sustainability Committee. In 2003, he partnered with the Greening UF Committee to create the biweekly, University-wide Conversations in Sustainability, a forum that discussed sustainability on the campus and in the community. In the spring of 2004, he served as part of the faculty for a course in sustainability in the University s Honors Program. He also serves as topical lecturer for other courses in the College. In 2001, he co-founded a multi-disciplined research consortium of University Florida faculty, the Program for Resource Efficient Communities (PREC), providing research and technical assistance to property owners, municipalities and developers in sustainable design and land development. As a principal researcher for PREC, he currently has grants for comprehensive 5
6 documentation of sustainable design measures in community design and land development practices, as well as to critique and identify model land development in the State of Florida. In 2003 Mr. Acomb designed the site improvements for the Model Center for Madera, an 88-lot, model green subdivision located in Gainesville. Madera is a partnership with the University of Florida s Energy Extension Service that will be a model community to illustrate sustainable practices in site design and building construction. His work modeling the performance of the model lot in comparison to conventional lot design and performance has been nationally recognized and presented at a number of national conferences. He co-designed the University of Florida s first green roof project, the Perry Construction Yard project, located adjacent to Rinker Hall. This 2,600 square foot roof will harvest rainwater through two 1,550 sq. ft. cisterns, making that available to irrigate the landscape. The plant material consists of primarily native plants that will provide for an expanded plant palette for future green roof projects in Florida. In addition to his technical assistance, Glenn raised $25,500 to fund the green roof (the majority of funding through a grant from the Florida DOT). In 2001, Mr. Acomb co-founded the Program for Resource Efficient Communities, a consortium of multidiscipline University of Florida faculty to actively pursue grants and service for comprehensive documentation of sustainable design measures in community design and land development practices. In addition the group provides sustainable planning and design input for development projects. Currently, the group is partnering with Audubon International to evaluate and prepare evaluations of candidate projects seeking Audubon International designation in the State of Florida, and to create a Center for Sustainable Communities for continuing research in resource efficient development in the State of Florida. As a part of this, Mr. Acomb will continue to identify model sustainable land development codes in the State of Florida. In 2006, he was asked to serve on the American Institute of Architect s S/DAT (Sustainable Design Assessment Team) to assist Guemes Island, Washington, plan for sustained, future development. A team of 6 nationally prominent professionals from across the United States spent 4 days in Guemes Island and prepared recommendations for the future (AIA report). B. Water Conservation in the Landscape. The balancing of the demands for Florida s water resources with environmental protection has become one of Florida s most critical issues for the coming years. Currently, Glenn serves on the Environmental Protection Agency s (EPA) national stakeholder group to create guidelines for new home construction and creation of the new WaterSense brand for water conservation appliances, design and construction practices. The work in the Madera project has been instrumental in understanding the performance of best management/design practices at the lot and community design level. Further, he has co-written the certification criteria for the IFAS Energy Extension Service s Water Star certification for landscape improvements as a part of IFAS training, has served as lecturer for Water Star training (for extension agents and water management staff), and serves as faculty for in-service training for the Florida Yards & Neighborhoods Extension Staff (University of Florida). 6
7 From , Mr. A majority of these have been residential single-family homes. His research on the Madera project has focused on the documentation of the performance of site design techniques resulting in water conservation in a way that is made available to the public, the design and construction communities and to regulatory entities. Measuring water conservation practices in the landscape will take place through the Madera project, the 88-lot demonstration subdivision that is a partnership of the University of Florida Energy Extension Office and the developer. A cost-sharing grant is under consideration by the St. Johns River Water Management District to measure the capital costs of water conservation measures as well as cost-benefits through 3 years. Through the Madera project, data will be collected regarding capital costs and life-cycle costs for a variety of construction areas including landscaping, turf improvements, irrigation improvements, site stormwater management, permeable pavement, and roof stormwater collection and infiltration. C. Construction Education and Licensure. Mr. Acomb has been devoted to site design and construction as the lead faculty member in construction education. In 2007, he wrote LARE Review: Mastering Section C: Planning and Design, published by Professional Publications, Inc., the leading publisher of licensure preparation books.
