2 SELECTED PROJECT EXPERIENCE Master Plan Update University of San Diego San Diego, CA M.W. Steele Group, LLC in association peerson+design+consult, inc. Currently working on a Master Plan Update for the 180-acre University of San Diego (USD) campus. Working closely with M.W. Steele Group on the program development, campus and community outreach strategy, site capacity studies, design guidelines leading up to a Master Plan Update to guide the next years of campus development. The Master Plan not only guides the physical development of the campus it is the road map for the USD campus that creates a vision for the future. The Master Plan shows that future enrollment, campus populations, developable land and future facilities can be accommodated. It sets forth the goals and long-term development projected for the USD campus while recognizing the unique attributes of the campus to the Linda Vista community and the city of San Diego. Responsible for the existing conditions, guiding principles, policy framework and design guidelines in the Master Plan that set up the site selection adjacencies, site improvements and compliance with the City of San Diego Conditional Use Permit requirements for a higher education institution. 3 SELECTED PROJECT EXPERIENCE West Campus Capacity Study and Siting Analysis University of California, Riverside Riverside, CA peerson+design+consult, inc in association with Zimmer Gunsul Frasca, Nelson\Nygaard Consulting, WRT Prior to preparation of the Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) amendment for a new 40-acre School of Medicine, an extensive 500-acre development analysis was prepared and site capacity study completed. Land use and academic adjacencies, open space framework, circulation, including parking and shuttle bus routes were analyzed and a 3D model created to confirm building lay-out for nearly 8.5 million square feet of development planned for the West Campus. Working as the lead consultant, peerson+design+consult managed and directed the West Campus Capacity Study including confirmation of the academic and housing programs, alternative site options, development of open space, parking, circulation, and infrastructure framework plans similar to a master plan effort. Our team provided landscape architect, architect, traffic engineering and utilities infrastructure services that were translated into planning principles and design guidelines in the LRDP to direct the physical development of the West Campus. The Capacity Study was necessary to validate the projected enrollment, campus population, academic programming, and land use decisions guiding the West Campus. The new vision for the West Campus was to emphasize the Gage Canal open space corridor and connect it with a series of malls, quads and plazas. 5 2005 Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) Amendment 2 University of California, Riverside Riverside, CA peerson+design+consult, inc in association with Zimmer Gunsul Frasca, Nelson\Nygaard Consulting, WRT University of California, Riverside (UCR) occupies almost 1,210 acres with nearly half of the area on the West Campus occupied by agricultural teaching and research fields. In order to meet the campus academic goals, projected student enrollment, and a new School of Medicine to be located on the UCR campus, an amendment to its long range plan was prepared. The LRDP guides the physical development of the campus and discusses future land use patterns and development of facilities, roads, open space, and infrastructure. A comprehensive update to the existing 2005 LRDP was prepared including land use changes, increased building square footage from 11.8 million to 14.2 million, a new open space framework plan, siting and consolidation of parking garages, and a new 40-acre School of Medicine site on the 500-acre West Campus. Working as the lead consultant, peerson+design+consult managed and directed the nearly 3 year work effort to prepare the LRDP Amendment, oversee campus constituent review and approval at the highest administrative level of the campus, as well as prepared the nearly 200 pages of updated text, maps, and figures to support the amendment. Our team provided landscape architect, architect, traffic engineering and utilities infrastructure services to support the updated long range plan. As part of the amendment process, we worked with the environmental consultant to ensure environmental compliance of the LRDP with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). 6 Revelle and Muir Colleges Neighborhood Planning Study University of California, San Diego (UCSD) La Jolla, CA UCSD Physical Planning Office in association with BMS Design Group Responsible for preparation of a neighborhood study that covers 105 acres for the first college, Revelle, and second college, Muir, at the UCSD campus. This study guides the anticipated enrollment growth and space planning for the two college neighborhoods. It anticipates academic program and housing growth, identifies sites for new facilities, and a pattern of development intended to enhance the quality of life and character of each college. Goals in the areas of Academic, Student Life, and Site Criteria lead the overall vision. Four big ideas guide the physical development: Neighborhood Quads, Ridgewalk, College and Campus Connectivity, and Unique Landscape Expression. Opportunity sites for rehabilitation or reuse of existing buildings were identified as well as sites for total redevelopment in order to improve academic adjacencies and connect open spaces with pedestrian walkways. Design Guidelines focused on three key elements: Sustainable Design and Climate Responsiveness, Building Location and Orientation, and Building Design. Guidelines are provided for site development, building design and landscape improvements. A phasing strategy was also prepared. The Study achieved unanimous support from the numerous campus planning and design committees that were actively engaged throughout the process. 7 Service Ms. Peerson was appointed in March 2012 by Mayor Sanders and the City Council to serve a four year term as a Planning Commissioner on the City of San Diego Planning Commission. Appointment to the Planning Commission is one of the highest honors a planning professional can attain for public service. Planning Commission meets weekly and the position is not a paid appointment. Ms. Peerson possesses the ability to understand and analyze complex issues, listen to divergent positions, and make an informed decision where there is controversy and a lack of consensus. She must abide by a strong Code of Ethics as an appointed official and city decision-maker. As a Planning Commissioner she is responsible for directing short and long range growth and development of the city. Teaching Interests Throughout her career she has studied how regulations, ordinances, and policies shape the physical environment. Students learn how to recognize patterns using formal elements lots, blocks, streets, and neighborhoods to analyze and interpret urban form. The importance of scale and measurement are integral to students gaining analytical skills to understand how form affects social factors. Her teaching bridges theoretical and methodological questions with an emphasis on the contemporary city historical context, evolution of urban form, access to open space and public facilities, and quality of life. Given her education and breadth of professional experience she brings an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to her teaching at the University of San Diego and UC San Diego. Her classes are taught in a combination of lecture, studio, and hands-on format using case studies from her own work, projects discussed by the Planning Commission and current professional practice.
