Paper Weathering patterns of carved sand stone and conservation challenges- World Heritage site of Qutb complex for Stone Conservation ( SC-16) conference to be held in Glasgow in Workshop on Historic lime mortars August 2014, Association with National Centre for Safety of Historic Structure, IIT, Madras I was the resource person for the workshop conducted by NCSHS, its first Theme-Based Workshop during 31st July to 2nd August, 2014 at IIT Madras, Chennai. IIT Chennai has established the National Centre for Safety of Heritage Structures (NCSHS) under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (Government of India). NCSHS is envisioned as a long-term programme towards addressing the national grand challenge of ensuring structural safety of historical monuments and heritage structures in India with resource persons from India and abroad. The centre is mandated to (a) undertake fundamental research and technology development, (b) build capacity in national and state-level implementing agencies, (c) provide technical solutions to challenges in conservation, and (d) disseminate R&D outcomes. The workshop had covered a range of scientific and practical aspects of historical lime mortars through lectures, presentations, demonstrations and site visits to historical buildings in Chennai. In particular, the workshop will focus on characterisation of historical lime mortar, chemistry of hydraulic/non-hydraulic lime, practical aspects of using building lime, consequences of using cement in historical buildings and existing traditional practices of building lime. The 3-day lime workshop aimed at developing a status paper on practical aspects and scientific material characterisation of historical lime mortars in India
3 Conservation of World Heritage site of Humayun s tomb and adjoining historic building complexes ( ) I had worked with AKTC (Aga Khan Trust for Culture) as a program officer as well as consultant for conservation works since February 2008 on Nizamuddin Basti, Sunder Nursery, and Humayun s Tomb Urban Renewal Project. The site is comprised of several historic Mughal monuments of 16-17th Century including World Heritage site of Humayun s tomb. Preparation of conservation plans of World Heritage site of Humayun s tomb and adjoining historic structures Tomb garden complexes of World Heritage site such as Humayun s tomb complex, Isa Khan Tomb garden complexes, Bu Halima Tomb garden complex and Afsarwala tomb complex were extensively surveyed and documented. A detailed condition mapping was carried out in order to understand the major cause of decay as well as to work out the appropriate conservation works. A detailed conservation plans were prepared as a part of the program. The Humayun s tomb and other significant structures of the World Heritage site were documented stone by stone to analyse the cause of decay. Lime Training workshops I had co-ordinated a series of 18 lime workshops in three years at World Heritage site of Humayun s tomb for conservation officials from Archaeological Survey of India, conservation professionals, architects and students. The lime training program was established with the aim of providing specialised training in the use of lime in historic monuments. The course had adopted a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach and was designed for professionals involved in the conservation of historic buildings. 3D laser scanning workshops Co-ordinated 3D laser scanning workshop in December 2008 to train ASI staff for High Definition Survey of monuments. Several 3D laser scanning sessions were carried out on World Heritage of Humayun s tomb along with the trainees. Research for Mughal glazed tile works After finding the traces of original Mughal glazed on World Heritage site of Humayun s tomb, a detailed documentation and condition mapping was done of individual existing Mughal Glazed tile works. After several discussions and evaluations, conservation process was established for the conservation of glazed tile works for this site. I had carried out an extensive scientific and experimental research on Historic Mughal Glazed tiles of Humayun s tomb for find out the original compositions and preparation techniques for the conservation and reproduction using traditional materials and techniques to re-establishing the production techniques for Mughal glazed tile. After 4 years of extensive research an approach was established for the production of close matching glazed tiles. Conservation plan of Quli Qutb Shahi tomb complex, Hyderabad The Qutb Shahi Tombs Complex, presently nominated to the World Heritage List is one of the most significant historic medieval necropolises with 70 structures within its complex, encompassing 40 mausoleums, 23 mosques, five step-wells/water structures, a hamam (mortuary bath), pavilions, garden structures and enclosure walls built during the reign of the Qutb Shahi Dynasty that ruled the Hyderabad region for 170 years in the 16th 17th centuries. A conservation plan was prepared for Quli Qutb Shahi tomb complex which includes 3
4 documentation and detailed condition mapping of 56 monuments. An inventory was prepared for each structure to re-establish the significance of the site. Training workshops As an expert, I was invited for the following workshops: Listing workshop at Aurangabad workshop in March 2005 ( For INATCH) Local people and students of architecture were trained to carry out listing of heritage buildings of Aurangabad Listing workshop at Raipur in January 2007 ( For INTACH) Students of architecture, historians, geographers and planners are main participants of the workshops. Workshop included presentations, site visits, filling inventories and evaluation. Building conservation workshop at Hyderabad in April 2007 ( For HUDA) The workshop was organized by HUDA for training of PWD engineers. I also have written a technical manual on repair works for the participants. INTACH from August January 2008 Worked with INTACH as a consultant conservation architect from August January 2008 and handled following projects: Listing of heritage properties Listing of Heritage properties of Agra, Uttar Pradesh Listing of Raipur District, Chattisgarh Listing of Bilaspur district, Chattisgarh Listing of Daman city, Daman Listing of Patiala, Punjab Preparation of conservation plans It includes documentation, condition assessment and analysis, conservation items of works and estimates, conservation strategy, preparing material specifications and project planning. Projects are: Sirhindi gate, Patiala, Punjab Conservation of Sunami gate, Patiala, Punjab Darbar Hall, Quila Mubarak, Punjab Darbar Hall complex, Kapurthala, Punjab Moorish Mosque, Kapurthala, Punjab Quila Ahluwalia, Amritsar, Punjab Unprotected heritage structures of Agra, Uttar Pradesh Conservation plan and execution of conservation projects Sainik School, Kapurthala Samania gate, Patiala 4

Conservation plan for Gol Ghar, Mubarak Mandi, Jammu 2. Conservation plan for Rani Chandak Mahal, Mubarak Mandi, Jammu 3. Conservation plan for Naya Palace, Mubarak Mandi, Jammu Listing of Heritage properties of Jabalpur city, Madhya Pradesh Listing of heritage properties of Jabalpur was carried out in year 2003 and over 369 heritage properties were listed.
