Teacher Guide Teacher Answer Key and Kentucky Core Academic Standards for RPA 2 Grade 5 The Reading Proficiency Assessment consists of twelve Multiple Choice Questions, one Short Answer Question, and one Extended Response Question. Remind students that they are to record their answers on the Student Answer Sheet only, except for the Short Answer and Extended Response questions, which will be written on this packet. Before Administering the Assessment Print all Student Answer Sheets and test booklets according to CASCADE directions. Copy the student pages. IMPORTANT: Use photo setting or print and photo setting and do NOT make photocopies of photocopies so that the students will be able to see the pictures well enough to answer the questions. Arrange for accommodations for ECE and ESL students as indicated on the IEP or PSP. Directions for Administering the Assessment Explain to the students that this assessment will help you determine what they know at this point and encourage them to do their best. Remind students of appropriate test-taking procedures. They should answer EVERY question and leave no blanks. If they are unsure of an answer, they should determine a best guess. Review how to record answers on the scan form. Distribute assessment material and review directions. Monitor students during the assessment to make sure they are recording answers correctly. When finished, test booklets should be collected and students should work on other material until all have completed the assessment. Collect student answer sheets and check for stray marks before scanning. After Administering the Assessment Scan student answer sheets in the LEXMARK Scanner according to directions. Score the Short Answer and Extended Response questions and record in CASCADE. Analyze the data from the CASCADE reports. Results should be used to determine what next instructional steps are needed to move students toward attainment of reading standards. Use teacher and student analysis forms to assist with determining next instructional steps. Repurpose the passages to teach, review, and/or assess other English Language Arts Standards.

These look-fors do not include all the possible answers. Teachers are highly encouraged to craft sample responses and modify these look-fors based on their analyses and discussion. SAQ possible answer/look-fors: You read the texts Frederick Law Olmsted and Excerpt from Wikipedia. Which text would you read more closely in order to answer questions about Olmsted s ideas for designing parks in Louisville? Explain why, using information from the text. I would choose Frederick Law Olmsted. The text Excerpt from Wikipedia is about Olmsted s life, whereas Frederick Law Olmsted is about Olmsted s beliefs and how his beliefs influenced the way he designed parks. For example, the excerpt gives a basic overview of Olmsted s works and information about his personal life. Even though it mentions that he designed parks, it doesn t talk about his ideas for designing parks. The Frederick Law Olmsted text talks about how Olmsted wanted to design parks in the city so all people could get to them easily. NOTE: Students may choose to support their answer choices by emphasizing why they would NOT choose Excerpt from Wikipedia. Please accept their answers if they are well-supported. The above is only one example. There are many ideas for designing parks in the Frederick Law Olmsted that students may use in their answer. Extended Response possible answer/look-fors: Use information from the text to answer the extended response. A. Describe the speaker s point of view about stars. Use an example to support your conclusion. B. Describe the ways the speaker gets her point of view across to the reader. A. The speaker is amazed by all the stars, what they do, what they know, and how long they have existed. The author ends the poem by saying, Starlight, stars so bright, So many stars tonight. So many stars for me, From here to eternity. B. The speaker shares her point of view through her observations, questions, and wonderings about the stars. In the beginning she asks, How many can there be, Reaching to infinity? Later, she asks, Do the stars all know What I ll do and where I ll go? She uses exclamation points to emphasize observations Winged horse, swimming fish Shooting Star! Quick a wish! The speaker talks about the same stars she sees were the same stars that were there when Washington was young. She talks about how they will still be there when she is old and has gray hair. She talks about how they will be there for future generations and will be here to eternity.

Frederick Law Olmsted Designer of the Louisville Park System Frederick Law Olmsted was born in 1822 in Hartford, Connecticut. He lived during a period of great change in America. During his lifetime America was industrialized. Inventors created the automobile and electricity. Americans fought the Civil War. Railway companies finished building the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869 when Olmsted was 47 years old. Many businesses owned factories in cities. People moved into the cities to work in them. As a result, cities became crowded and dirty. As a child, Frederick s father took him on many trips to the green countryside outside of Hartford. Frederick learned to value and love nature during these trips, but he didn t make gardening his work until after he was 40 years old. Before he started designing parks, he was a writer and publisher. He Frederick Law Olmsted published a magazine called Putnam s Monthly Magazine. As part of this work, he visited many public parks in Europe. He became more and more interested in thinking about how parks could help people find peace and quiet. Hartford, Connecticut in 1853

Olmsted s first park project was to help design Central Park in New York City in When he signed his name to the plans for the park, he called himself a landscape architect," which means someone who designs landscapes." Olmsted is now known as the father of landscape architecture. Olmsted s Beliefs Olmsted wanted to improve the lives of the American people. He imagined wonderful parks in the heart of cities that would provide Central Park, New York, 1880 everyone with places to play. His parks created spaces for people to escape their busy city lives and gain a sense of peace. His parks provided relief from the unhealthy environment of the city. He wanted these parks to be for Olmsted designed the grounds of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. Design Ideas Olmsted wanted his parks to calm people when they looked at the scenery. He used curving landscapes with trees and plants at the edges, so that walkers could not see around the curves. He wanted them to be curious and continue walking to see what view was around the next bend. He thought this would help people feel relaxed and peaceful. everyone, no matter if they were rich or poor. Because of this desire, his parks needed to be as close as possible to the city so that all people could get to them easily. Olmsted hoped that when people met each other in the park, a sense of community would develop. Of course, he had the problem of trying to make the spaces look natural while still being in the city. He separated the park spaces from the surrounding areas by planting thick borders of leafy shrubs and trees. This blocked the view of the city from inside the park. People could play in organized activities in specially made spaces, like tennis courts. He designed those areas to be separate from the open areas for walking. Close-up of U.S. Capitol

The Louisville Park System The system of parks that Olmsted designed for Louisville in 1891 is the work of an artist. His design for Louisville includes three large parks and fifteen smaller parks and recreation areas. Olmsted planned a way for people to move easily between the parks in Louisville. He connected them with tree-lined parkways to handle the traffic and movement of walkers and vehicles. The large scenic parks at the ends of the parkways give people a chance to be in the midst of nature. Each park has unique characteristics that blend with its purpose of providing a place for people to enjoy the scenery. Cherokee Park has long roads that wind through the hills and valleys along the Beargrass Creek. The roads open to large green fields in the bottomlands along the creek. Statue of Daniel Boone, Cherokee Park Iroquois Park has a rugged and hilly terrain. It includes a 10,000 year- old forest. It is mostly made up of woodlands. There is an overlook at the top of one of the hills where you can go and see the city of Louisville from above. It is truly an amazing sight. Shawnee Park is built by the Ohio River in the low-lying land that runs alongside the river. Olmsted designed this park with a great lawn as a place where large groups of people could gather. The beautiful view of the Ohio River is the feature that makes Shawnee Park unique. Imagine what Louisville might look like today without Olmsted s brilliant park designs which have endured for more than 100 years.

Excerpt from Wikipedia Frederick Law Olmsted was an American journalist, social critic, public administrator, and landscape designer. He is popularly considered to be the father of American landscape architecture, although many scholars have bestowed that title upon Andrew Jackson Downing. Olmsted was famous for co-designing many well-known urban parks with his senior partner Calvert Vaux, including Central Park and Prospect Park in New York City. Frederick Law Olmsted was born on April 26, 1822 in Hartford, Connecticut. He died on August 28, 1903 at the age of 81. His parents were John and Charlotte Olmsted. Olmsted was married to Mary Olmsted. They had three children John, Marion and Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. After Olmsted s retirement and death, his sons, John and Frederick, continued the work of their firm doing business as the Olmsted Brothers. The firm lasted until Many works by the Olmsted sons are mistakenly credited to Frederick Law Olmsted today. A quotation from Olmsted s friend and colleague architect Daniel Burnham could serve as an epitaph (a short text honoring a person s life). Referring to Olmsted in March 1893, Burnham said, An artist, he paints with lakes and wooded slopes; with lawns and banks and forest covered hills; with mountain sides and ocean views.
