4 A Sustainable Campus Community Environment: The building is a key part of the school s desire to create a sustainable campus and change the behaviours of students, staff and the wider community in best practice environmental management. In the planning stages, a representative group of parents, staff and students provided input to ensure the Centre met the needs of the educational facility community and the broader community.

5 A true community facility delivered pro bono Community Environment: Continued Through the generous support of partner organisations the project s final cost was less than half of the initial estimates. The architects designed, specified and supervised the project pro bono and local suppliers made significant contributions.

6 A Focus on Innovative Education Learning Environment: The project challenges current understandings of the role that educational facilities play in the learning process through its space planning, location and purposeful building. The Centre focuses on the school s innovative educational needs and creates an environment to support them. The entire building internally and externally provides locations for education to take place. The building s functional design supports the schools mindfulness meditation program, indigenous and environmental curriculum.

7 Located in the Moorooboon Wetlands Learning Environment: The building consists of a main program space, a small kitchenette, store room and a series of external covered decks and stairs for external activities. To respond to the multitude of programmatic requirements, the building has an elemental plan with a single primary space that is flexible. The primary space can be reprogrammed as necessary and includes smaller service spaces grouped to the side. This plan creates transition spaces and thresholds to different spaces to create a calm, reflective environment suitable for education, reflection and meditation. Its location within the Moorooboon Wetland makes it an ideal base for delivery of other curriculum areas and is also used extensively to teach Art, Science, English and Humanities to classes of 25 students or more.

8 A Purposeful Building Physical Environment Narrative The design solution is a purposeful building that creates a calm space for meditation and plays a role in the schools environmental, indigenous culture and mindfulness meditation curriculum. The building is physically separate from the rest of the school, and this enhances the connection to wetlands and existing environmental initiatives. Being separate creates a micro environment to deliver the College s innovative curriculum. The M&ICC is located in a precinct that provides habitat, sequesters carbon, improves whole site biodiversity and operates as both an outdoor and indoor specialist classroom.

9 Physical Environment Continued The external shape of the building is a design response to the site to maximise the views and limit direct eastern and western summer sun. The building has large, exaggerated awnings over each window ensuring that solar heat gain is used to its best potential. These elements together with significant insulation will complement the second stage geothermal exchange unit. The design solution also supports the existing sustainable initiatives of the school, including the water management systems, electricity and the indigenous artist in residence program scheduled to begin in January 2014.

10 A Fit For Purpose Design Planning Process: Narrative The construction process was shared with the students as part of the learning process. Students observed the construction process and management of procurement and sustainability in the built environment was incorporated into the curriculum from the planning phase onwards. Through continuous consultation with the community a truly fit for purpose building has been created to meet the needs of the schools innovative curriculum.

11 A True Community Hub Planning Process: Continued Procurement summary: Initial discussions between Bill Thomas and teachers defined the need for the facility Subsequent discussions with Administration. Bentleigh Secondary College approached the architecture firm to complete architectural and planning work. The architecture firm accepted and agreed to complete the project pro bono Planning group of teachers, students, parents formed. Planning group and architect meet regularly to define scope Builder approached and appointed (cost of wages only) Further meetings between Bill Thomas, Hugh Jones, Stuart Baber, Nick Cini and Tim Cantwell to refine the timeline.
