1 Title Duration Purpose/ Scope Occupational Relevance Candidate Pre-requisites Instruction/ Supervision Delivery Assessment Exothermic Welding in Construction Minimum 1 day of 6 learning hours The purpose of this standard is to provide the knowledge and skills to perform exothermic welding to make connections for lightning systems. Connections may be completed on a roof or on the ground. The scope of this standard covers: Hot work risks including: fire, explosion, sparks, flames, toxic fumes, and burns. The hot work risks are in addition to working at height. Write a hot work permit (welding) Fire prevention, protection, monitoring, alarm, mitigation strategies/systems, and emergency fire response How to perform a work area hazard analysis and risk assessment How to handle and store exothermic welding tools and equipment Exothermic welding tools and equipment Principles and advantages of exothermic welding Preparation for exothermic welding How to make exothermic welds How to clean up after welding Training delivered against this standard is relevant to the following occupational group(s): Operative and Craft; and Supervision. For this training, candidates must hold a valid Working at Height Awareness certificate. It would be beneficial if candidates had a basic knowledge of roofing systems. Before candidates perform the work on a construction site, candidates must have successfully completed roofing-specific training for working safely at height. As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have: A train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate Successfully completed training to this standard At least 2 years relevant industrial experience A verifiable CV The following methods may be used in the delivery of this standard: Practical training: off the job simulated environment (on the ground) Theory training: classroom, e-learning, or a combination The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes. All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation. Learning should include at least 50% of learning activities to suit example work pieces. 2 Quality Assurance Renewal Approval Date Review Cycle Quality Assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard. CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the Training Organisation can meet the requirements of the Training Standard. Approved Training Organisations will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB Quality Assurance team. No Renewal/Refreshment Requirements - There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard. TBC Either on request or in 3 years from approval date. Learning Outcomes The candidate will be able to: Describe hot work risks including: fire, explosion, sparks, flames, toxic fumes, and burns. The hot work risks are in addition to working at height.
