3 DESIGN PHILOSOPHY My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style. - Maya Angelou Passion is at the center of everything I do. Passionate for the people, the spaces, and the experiences that connect users and place drive me to pursue greater depth in design. I love working in the conceptual phase because I believe every design has a story to tell and it s the construction of that story line that fuels my creativity. Seeing design as a story is important; it gives value to the people who will inhabit the space, purpose to the space to be more than a box with four walls, and demands an interaction that leaves users feeling connection to their surroundings. Personally, my story has played a huge part in molding the adventurous, determined, and faithful person I am today. Interior Design is a medium for me to give back to the world, a channel for me to share my passions with others and hopefully evoke a desire in another to pursue their dreams. Throughout the design process I constantly go back to the storyline of my concept. What is the point? Why is my design significant? How will users engage with their built environment? These are questions I find myself constantly drawn to, working to solve from the schematic phase all the way through the final design. I believe in taking risks, I believe in architecture and design as avenues of activism, I believe in transforming spaces in ways one would not typically expect. Through design challenges and forcing myself to think in new ways I have learned so much about who I am as a person and as a designer. Design has taught me that there is always a way, sometimes it takes more searching, but every problem has a solution and it s our job to creatively solve them. I have learned to be bold and pursue what matters even when that causes you to stand out, no notable design has ever blended in with its surroundings. Lastly, I have learned that at the end of the day I have found a career that enables me to use my talents and passions to impact the lives of others and that is such a powerful revelation. Design is storytelling, storytelling with a purpose and as an interior designer, I am the author. 6 THE AMAZON JOURNEY 6 AMAZON TRAINING CENTER - SHERWIN WILLIAMS STIR COMPETITION Enter the ATC and immediately be greeted by images and motifs of the Amazon. Let curiosity take you around the corner where you ll find yourself among the tress in a vibrant and active living space. Dive into training in one the classrooms or cook, eat, and socialize in the heart of the center. Continue on where community is cultivated in the living room or retreat to one of the personal breakout nooks. Your experience at the ATC will prepare you for a journey to come, help build relationships with team members, and enlighten you on life in the Amazon. Living Room 6. Personal Breakout Nooks 7. Director s Living Quarters 8. Director s Office 9. Restrooms 7 COLOR STORY Reflecting the ideas of community, team work, and integration with nature, the Amazon Training Center (ATC) is representative of the stories the Kayapo Amazonians tell. Color is integrated in a fashion that inspires and engages users to learn, gather, and work in this environment. The focal wall of the space lies in the back of the living room, and draws curious users through the space to explore for themselves. The Kayapo tribe believed body painting was an expression of their identity and used different forms and colors to express family lineage, social status, and names. The focal wall in the ATC pulls a fusion of colors together in a pattern replicating popular body painting designs to help users truly feel like they are a part of the Kayapo story. Bright and vibrant colors such as yellow and green are used in the kitchen and work spaces to inspire productivity. Blue and browns are used in more relaxing spaces to calm users. Red and orange are used in social gatherings areas to encourage conversation and casual learning opportunities.
7 8 BEHIND THE IRIS - OMNI-CHANNEL RETAIL CONCEPT STATEMENT Behind the Iris is a bold and vibrant store capturing guest by their intriguing window displays and energy as they enter the store. Once inside the journey begins as color and way finding guide you to eye-catching product displays and encourage interaction with technology and associates. Through interactive See Me stations and conveniently located mirrors, product interaction is intuitive and fun, inspiring customers to learn and play with the product. Customers will find their way through the store by using color associations and furniture to key focal points allowing flexibility and movement. Expressive branding and reliance on omni-channel connections with maximize experience and cultivate loyalty. Strategic use of light will provide a comfortable ambiance while highlighting product in a fashionable manner. Shopping in Behind the Iris is not just a task, it is an experience that customers will be inspired by. PROBLEM STATEMENT The biggest problem eyewear stores face is feeling too cold and bland, often described as clinical, rather than capitalizing on the target consumers to provide an experiential environment. Lighting is either inefficient or too harsh causing glare and eye strain. Standard store layouts do not encourage guests to journey through the space and have poor signage to direct guests to their needs. Most consumers as a result do not have memorable experiences in eyewear stores nor feel inspired to return. PARTI AND SCHEMATIC ZONING Private: Employee Support Spaces and Restrooms PROJECT GOALS Create a holistic customer experience by maximizing om- Mirror the trendy and bold customer profile of metro millennials by speaking to their personality. Captivate potential guest by intriguing them with light features and spur loyalty by creating comfort and flexibility within the store. Being highly social and trendy, this generation is all about travel, defining their story, and pursuing the work / play balance. Responsive to the diversity, Behind the Iris features three main product groups; Sporty, Classic, and Retro with custom designed displays to engage users with product that uniquely speaks to them. 8 10 MY GRANDMA S CHAIR - FURNITURE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION TOP LEFT: Conceptual Diagrams focusing on increasing posture and spinal support BOTTOM LEFT: Process Images RIGHT: Proposed Design 11 WHERE THERE S A WHEEL, THERE S A WAY My grandmother has always been one to inspire me to challenge my limits and stand up for what I believe in. Now in her old age with her failing mental and physical strength she is limited in mobility and freedom in her home. She has refused to use a wheelchair because in her opinion they are ugly and uncomfortable. As an artist, she sees the beauty in design and struggles with settling for function. My goal is to address these concerns and personalize a chair specifically for my grandma. Starting with an old wheelchair I used both additive and subtractive methods to construct a new chair that is both functional and comfortable while standing as an attractive piece of furniture.
