2 Curbside Collection Guidelines Materials should be curbside by 8:00 am on the designated collection day, but no earlier than 10:00 pm on the day before collection day. Collection days are Monday to Friday, excluding all statutory holidays, Boxing Day, and Easter Monday (see schedule on page 5). Should your collection day fall on a holiday, pick-up will occur the following business day. To confirm the collection day in your area, please refer to the collection schedule and map on pages 5 & 6, or at Weight limit: 23 kg (50 lbs.) for cans, bundles, and bags of all collected materials. Place all containers within 2 m of the roadway. Remove empty containers no later than 10pm on collection day. Do not tie down lids of containers. Bi-weekly Garbage Collection One 121L can (maximum of 23 kg / 50 lbs.) is accepted per collection. Garbage must be bagged and placed in a rigid, waterproof can with a lid. If you require collection of additional garbage, single use bag tags may be purchased at the Regional District office (4545 Lazelle Ave.) for $2 each (sold in groups of 10). A maximum of four bag tags may be used per collection. Not Accepted in Garbage Collection Program: Recyclables, bulky items such as furniture and construction materials, appliances, electronic products, liquids, or organic materials. Bi-weekly Recycling Collection Unlimited amounts of recycling are accepted each collection, in secured transparent bags placed in cans. Please ensure can is identifiable as recycling (i.e. with a sticker, spray paint, or marker) Flatten cardboard and place beside your recycling can in bundles not exceeding 1 cubic metre (36 x 36 ). Rinse containers to remove food residue. Weekly Organics Collection Six items are accepted per collection: up to two containers with lids (kitchen or yard waste) and up to four bundles or kraft paper bags of yard waste. Containers, bundles, and kraft bags must not exceed 23 kg/ 50 lbs. each. Containers must not exceed 99 L. Bundles may not exceed the dimensions of a kraft bag. 3 How To: Weekly Organics Collection Bagging Requirements To receive collection, please: TO THE CURB 8:00 Organics that contain kitchen and food waste must be placed in rigid, lidded containers. The Regional District recommends, but does not require, the use of compostable bags to help keep bins clean, reduce odour, and reduce animal attraction. Compostable bags come in a variety of sizes, and must contain one of the following logos: am Do not use plastic or biodegradable bags. Biodegradable plastic does not compost Accepted Materials Fruits and vegetables Meat, fish, poultry, and eggs (including bones and shells) Dairy (including cheese and yogurt) Tea bags and coffee grounds Food soiled paper (napkins, paper plates, pizza boxes etc.) Noodles, grains, rice, and bread Small amounts oil and fat (soaked in newspaper or paper towel) Grass clippings and leaves Weeds, plants, and flowers (no noxious plants) Short branches and prunings (less than 10 cm thick and 50 cm long) Food and Kitchen waste must go in rigid containers. Yard waste may be bundled, put in kraft bags, or rigid containers. Not Accepted Materials These items are not accepted and should be recycled or safely disposed of.! If unacceptable materials are found in your Organics, it will not be collected. Remove any unacceptable materials and it will be picked up on your next collection. 4 How To: Bi-weekly Recycling Collection Mixed Containers ACCEPTED Mixed Paper TO THE CURB 8:00 am NOT ACCEPTED Do NOT place in curbside recycling Plastic bottles, jars and jugs Plastic trays and clamshells Paper egg cartons Paper bags Caps, tops, lids and pumps Metal cans Plastic or paper take-out cups, bowls, and lids Boxboard boxes and packaging Shredded paper (contained in paper bag or box) Envelopes Plastic bags and overwrap Paper towels, napkins and tissues Glass Hard and soft cover books Cartons of milk, soup, etc. Plastic garden pots and seeding trays Magazines, catalogues, phone books Household paper Hazardous waste (needles, flammable/ explosive/toxic material etc.) Hangers, pots, pans, and other scrap metal Foil wrap and take-out containers Aerosol cans (empty) Newspapers, inserts, flyers Plastic packaging for toys and other household items Spiral wound cans and lids for frozen juice concentrate, coffee, etc. Plastic tubs for yogurt, margarine, etc. Plastic pails less that 25 L for laundry detergent, etc. Plastic packaging for shampoo, hand soap, etc. Paper carry-out beverage trays Cores from paper towel and toilet tissue Paper gift wrap Paper gift bags Paper bags for flour, sugar, etc. Corrugated cardboard boxes Electronics and appliances Toys and games GLASS, PLASTIC BAGS / OVERWRAP AND STYROFOAM ARE NOT ACCEPTED CURBSIDE. 5 How To: Bi-weekly Garbage Collection One 121 L lidded can of bagged garbage not exceeding 23 kg / 50 lbs. is accepted each collection. TO THE CURB 8:00 am Oops! Oops Stickers are intended to provide information to help you use the collection service correctly. If necessary, they will be placed on your can to help you sort your materials and set out your cans correctly. Most Oops Sticker messages are triggered by safety. If the can is too heavy, or if it is too far or too close to the roadway, it may be unsafe for the collector or other vehicles. The stickers will let you know Collection Schedule Have extra garbage? Extra bag tags are available at the Regional District office for $2 each and are sold in sets of 10. Clearly display the sticker on your extra bags on collection day. A maximum of 4 bag tags may be used per collection. Missed Collection? Please contact Geier Waste Services, the contracted service provider, with questions or concerns regarding the collection service and missed collections. Contact the Regional District for billing and additional program information. What to do with Large Items? Bulky items such as large furniture are not accepted in curbside collection. If items are still in good condition, consider donating to a local thrift store. If it is time for disposal, please call or visit bc.ca for items that are accepted at the Thornhill Transfer Station. It uses Product Stewardship Programs, which are guided by the principle that In the Terrace Area whoever produces or uses a product must take responsibility for that product s environmental impact.
