3 The City of Salmon Arm provides a Residential Solid Waste and Recycling Collection Program for eligible dwellings within City limits. Residents are permitted one (1) standard bag of garbage per week and an unlimited amount of recyclables every other week. Garbage and Recycling is collected in the City of Salmon Arm by Progressive Waste Solutions. Please read the following guidelines carefully. Failure to follow garbage/recycling placement, storage, and content guidelines may result in non-collection. The Collection and Disposal of Solid Waste and Recycling Bylaw No can be found at: GUIDELINES Limits Each eligible dwelling is permitted one (1) standard bag of garbage and unlimited recycling, provided each bag does not exceed maximum size and weight limits. Extra garbage bags must have Extra Bag Tag stickers. These may be purchased at City Hall or the SASCU Recreation Centre for $2 each. Maximum (standard) bag size is 17 gallons (75 litres) or 33 (82.6 cm) by 26 (66 cm). Maximum bag weight is 22 lbs (10 kg). Bags should be placed at Curbside before 7:00 a.m. For informat on cal : Progressive Waste or ca/curbside SAMPLE $2 Extra Bag Tag Bags (required) All garbage and recycling (except large, corrugated cardboard) must be placed in bags and tied or closed securely. Flatten large corrugated boxes and tie in bundles no larger than 8 (20 cm) thick X 30 (78 cm) wide X 30 (78 cm) tall. Recycling bags must be clear or clear blue in colour. Garbage bags may be any colour except blue. Containers (optional) Garbage/recycling bags may be placed in containers to protect them from weather and scavengers. All garbage/recycling placed in containers must also be bagged. Cans with loose debris (i.e. sweepings), will not be accepted. Containers must be non-corrosive, durable, watertight and fitted with handles and a lid. Recycling containers must be blue in colour and have a clearly marked recycling symbol. Garbage containers may be any colour except blue. Placement Bags must be placed at the curb, in front of the residence before 7 AM on collection days. Bags must be visible from the street (i.e. in front of snow banks, vehicles, etc). ITEMS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR DISPOSAL The following items are not accepted for curbside garbage collection, curbside recycling, or for burial at the landfill: 8Auto hulks and tires, biomedical waste, farm animal carcasses and farm animal body parts, ignitable wastes, liquids and semi-solid wastes (except as permitted by bylaw), log yard wastes, PCB s, radioactive wastes, reactive wastes, and solid waste that is on fire or smoldering. The following items are not accepted for curbside garbage collection, but are accepted elsewhere as compost, recycling, etc.: 8Construction and demolition wastes that have been designated as recyclable or reusable by the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD), any other items deemed to be marketable or recyclable by the CSRD, recyclable wastes (including but not limited to: corrugated cardboard, directories, lead acid batteries, paper fibres, propane tanks, scrap metal, white goods, food cans, glass jars and containers), any other items listed in Schedules of the BC Recycling Regulation (provided there are opportunities to recycle listed items), hazardous waste (except permitted by bylaw), and yard and garden waste. 4 Curbside Yard Waste Collection Spring: Monday, April 25, 2016 Fall: Monday, November 7, 2016 The City of Salmon Arm will be providing yard waste collection services on Monday, April 25 and Monday, November 7, coinciding with the CSRD s Free Yard Waste Events. All items (including branches) must be placed (unbundled) in compostable (kraft) paper bags. Bags can be found at local retailers. Please check with retailers for availability. The following items will be accepted for collection: clippings (grass, lawn, and hedge), sod, flowers, weeds (noninvasive), leaves, vegetable stacks, shrubs, and shrub/tree branches. Shrub and tree branches may be up to 1 (2.5 cm) in diameter and 3 (91 cm) in length. Materials will be accepted in unlimited quantities, provided each bag does not weigh more than 44lbs (20 kg). Do not bundle branches. Bags must be placed curbside by 7 AM. If the trucks are unable to reach every neighborhood on the collection day, missed neighborhoods will be collected on subsequent days. BC RECYCLES BC Recycles is made up of several product stewardship organizations. Stewardship agencies are non-profit organizations formed by BC s producers and brandowners as part of their compliance under the BC Recycling Regulation. These agencies collect and divert end-of-life consumer products and packaging from disposal. Multi-Material BC Multi-Material BC is the stewardship agency responsible for the recycling of packaging and printed paper in Salmon Arm and many other communities. Multi-Material BC is a non-profit stewardship organization representing the businesses who supply packaging and printed paper to BC residents. OTHer stewardship agencies Stewardship agencies exist for many of the products that you cannot recycle under the MMBC Program. This includes batteries, beer containers, beverage containers, cell phones, outdoor electrical equipment, electronics, lighting equipment (including lights, lamps and fixtures), lead-acid batteries, medication, used oil and antifreeze, paint and household hazardous waste, small appliances and power tools, thermostats, and tires. Place shredded paper inside a securely-tied, see-through plastic bag (no opaque, coloured or black bags). 8Padded envelopes. PAPER PACKAGING FOR DRY GOODS Corrugated Cardboard Boxes Shipping boxes; grocery and liquor store boxes; and pizza boxes. 8Cardboard boxes with wax coating, e.g., empty shipping boxes made Empty Boxes. Staples and tape OK. available for residents to transport their groceries home. Flatten large corrugated boxes and tie in bundles no larger than 8 (20 cm) thick X 30 (78 cm) wide X 30 (78 cm) tall. For ice cream, frozen yogurt, etc. Empty and rinse cartons. 8Straws or non-paper insulating wraps. 8Foam cups (take to MMBC recycling depot). 8Biodegradable or compostable plastic packaging. 8Napkins. 8Juice cartons (return to depot for deposit refund). 8Drink boxes (return for deposit refund). 8Straws. 8Stand up pouches. 8Plastic wrap. STEEL/ALUMINUM CONTAINERS Cans and Lids For food (including pet food); tins for cookies, tea, chocolates, etc. Empty Aerosol cans Spiral Wound Cans and Metal Lids Aluminum Foil and Foil Take-Out Containers Empty and rinse cans. Labels OK. Remove lids, drop into can and squeeze slightly. For food, air fresheners, shaving cream, deodorant, hairspray, etc. Empty cans. Remove caps & place loose in recycling bag. For frozen juice concentrate, potato chips, cookie dough, coffee, nuts, baby formula, etc. Remove lids & place loose in recycling bag. Remove caps & place loose in recycling bag. 8Jugs for flavoured tea, juice, other beverages (return to depot for deposit refund). Plastic Bottles and Caps Plastic Jars and Lids Plastic Clamshells Plastic Trays and Tops Plastic Pails For food, dish soap, mouthwash, shampoos, conditioners and other personal care products, pills and vitamins, laundry products, household cleaners, automotive cleaners, e.g., glass cleaner, windshield washer fluid, etc. Plastic bottles have screw caps, spray pump or pull-up tops. Empty and rinse bottles. Labels OK. Remove caps, spray pump and pull-up tops, and place loose in recycling bag. For peanut butter, jam, nuts, condiments, vitamins and supplements, personal care products and cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, etc. Plastic jars have wide mouths with screw-top lids. Empty and rinse jars. Labels OK. Remove lids & place loose in recycling bag. For baked goods, fruit, produce, eggs, etc. Containers are clear with hinged or click-closed tops. Empty and rinse containers. Labels OK. For deli chicken, single serve meals, prepared foods, baked goods, housewares and hardware, e.g. screws, picture hangers, etc. Containers are clear or have black bottom trays with clear domes. Empty and rinse trays. 8Beverage bottles (return to depot for deposit refund). 8Stand up pouches. 8Containers for motor oil, vehicle lubricant, or antifreeze products.* 8Biodegradable or compostable packaging. 8Liquid-absorbing pads. 8Foam trays (take to MMBC recycling depot). 8Liquid-absorbing pads. 8Soft plastic packaging for perishable foods, e.g. meat, fish or cheese, etc. 8Plastic blister packs, e.g., plastic/foil packaging for items like chewing gum and pills or plastic/paper packaging for batteries, toothbrushes, etc. 8Plastic paint cans.* 8Plastic pails larger than 25L. 8Pails for lubricants and oils.* *For disposal information, please call the Recycling Hotline at or visit

DEPOT ONLY ITEMS The following items are NOT accepted for curbside garbage collection or curbside recycling collection. Please take these items to the nearest MMBC recycling depot.
