Biomass and Pellet Stoves What is Biomass? The use of biomass in heating systems is hugely beneficial. It uses agriculture and forest waste and residues to produce heat with substantially less effect on the environment than traditional fossil fuels. In nature, when wood completes its decomposition cycle, CO2 is released into the atmosphere, which is then absorbed by plants via photosynthesis. The quantities of CO2 released into the atmosphere during the natural process of decomposition, exactly match the amount of carbon that the plant has absorbed during its growth. Making the entire process carbon neutral. All Specflue biomass products simply move the heat produced by biomass to the locations where energy is needed, without releasing new or differing quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere than wood releases naturally during decomposition. Choosing the correct product What to consider: The size of the room to be heated The insulation of the room The shape of the room The heating requirements The existing heating system and its heat output Whether it s a primary or secondary source of heating Type of heating preferred - air or water (hydro) air (room heater only) The stove warms up the room quickly and efficiently Hydro By utilising the existing plumbing system, the stove heats up the entire house The position of the flue pipe Our impressive System Designer software can simplify the entire process, simply log on to 4
Why buy a Pellet Stove? Pellet stoves burn compressed wood or biomass pellets to create a source of heat. By slowly feeding fuel automatically from the storage container (the hopper) into the burn tray, a constant flame is created and monitored to ensure maximum efficiency. Our range of pellet stoves and boilers are fully programmable; much like traditional gas boilers they use thermostats and time controlled systems. Specflue s pellet stoves offer: Low power consumption High efficiency Easy to use fully operated via an easy user friendly control panel Modern design steel and cast iron Available in a variety of stylish colours Powerful yet quiet Programmable room thermostat (optional) Compatible with the RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme) and MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) 5

Solar Thermal Single Array What is solar thermal? Solar thermal is the means by which solar energy is captured directly from the sun; to heat water and supplement domestic hot water demands. Why invest in solar thermal? East West Array Solar thermal helps to provide hot water throughout the year. Even on cold days when the sun is shining, hot water can still be produced Solar thermal is a renewable form of energy, providing a stable resource and a reduced carbon footprint Sunlight is a free resource. Once the initial installation has been paid for, hot water costs will be greatly reduced. Solar thermal can provide up to 80% of a home s hot water needs annually How does solar thermal work? Solar thermal uses a flat plate solar panel (called a collector) which is fitted to the roof of a building. Inside the solar collector are coils of copper pipe, which with the addition of sunlight, heat up the water that is slowly moving inside them. Evacuated tubes v s flat plates Within the UK the debate rolls on regarding the best solar solution, flat plates or evacuated tubes. This really is a matter of preference. Historically evacuated tubes were more efficient than flat plate collectors. Once the transfer fluid reaches the required temperature it is pumped to the heat exchanger in a large storage tank (known as a thermal store). The transfer fluid gives off its heat into the hot water via the heat exchanger. The hot water remains in the thermal store for domestic hot water needs. Once the temperature of the water within the thermal store falls below a set temperature, the pump starts up and the process is repeated to heat up the water again. Solar collectors are very efficient at converting solar radiation into heat. The ideal orientation for the solar collector is south, with a pitch of between 35 and 45 for a single array. However, in some instances this ideal south orientation is not possible. In these situations, the collectors are then divided into two arrays one on each roof side known as east west configuration for maximum exposure in daylight hours. However, with advances in the selective surfaces, the irradiative loses and the insulation of flat plates, nowadays there is very little difference in efficiencies due to the UK climate and average temperatures. Flat plate panel systems will always be a cheaper solution to the consumer. The question is: Does the extra cost really warrant the difference in performance between a flat plate collector and an evacuated tube collector? There is no doubt that in the winter months the evacuated tube system will be slightly more productive, this does come at a price though. Other considerations to address are: the aesthetics of the system, the security and the risk of losing the vacuum within the tube system. Test cases produced conclusively prove that either is an effective solution. The flat plate offers a worthy solution for less money than the evacuated tube system, with very little difference in efficiency. 24
It is solar thermal and biomass that complement each other the greatest. The carbon footprint on these two technologies is the lowest out of all the existing renewable solutions. Biomass is an ideal heating solution year round, however, in the summer solar thermal is more efficient to run and will provide all hot water needs. Our collectors Our flat plate collectors are universal and can be used for individual houses, housing blocks and public and industrial buildings. Designed with a larger absorber surface area (2.040m 2 instead of the standard 1.827m 2 ), this enables a 12% increase in the collector battery surface area without the need to increase the number of collectors; leading to low unit heat losses and higher levels of thermal efficiency. The absorber plate 5 is made entirely of a single aluminium sheet (0.40mm thickness, twice that of copper sheets) and a parallel arrangement of copper pipes 6 (providing minimum flow resistance, reduced electricity consumption by the circulation pump and rapid emptying of glycol from the pipes in case of overheating and stagnation of the collector). These are connected together using the latest laser welding methods to provide high rigidity. 1 Casing 2 Seal 3 Transparent Cover 4 Thermal Insulant 5 Absorber Plate 6 Tube The quality of our solar collector is confirmed by a SOLAR KEYMARK certificate, whilst also complying with the quality requirements of the PN-EN standard. The absorber plate 5 is covered with a BlueTec selective coating produced using oxides of titanium and silicon, with good selectivity properties (absorption 95%, emission 5%). The transparent cover 3 is made from structural glass providing high transmission to solar radiation (91.6%, which represents the highest class U1). Low environmental heat losses are ensured by the use of a thermal insulant 4 of mineral wool (55mm thick on the bottom of the housing and 20mm thick on the side walls). Length 2,019mm Width 1,037mm Height 90mm Gross Surface 2.094m 2 Aperture Area 1.817m 2 Liquid Capacity 1.1 litres Weight 39kg Optical Efficiency 81.1% Loss Coefficient A1: 4.46; A2: Lifetime of Panel 25 years Minimum Warranty 10 years Solar collector installation options Solar collectors are versatile in respect of their location and method of installation. Whether a steep roof or other freely positioned and inclined surface, a wide range of mounting options are available. In-roof installation is perfect for new build properties as it maintains the integrity of the roof and looks less obtrusive. The solar panel is mounted directly onto the roof battens and tiled into the roof for weather tight installation. On-roof installation is perfect for existing properties. The solar panel is fitted to specifically designed brackets which can be fixed directly to most types of slate and tile roofs. Flat roof installation is achieved via the use of an A-Frame. An A-Frame is also used if people wish to mount solar panels in their garden (an option for people who have not got a south facing roof, but who wish to achieve a perfect south facing array). 25

Thermal Stores What are thermal stores? Thermal stores provide both space heating and mains pressure hot water by storing and managing heat distribution, from both traditional and renewable heat sources. As a result thermal stores are becoming increasingly popular in domestic settings. As long as it has been designed and sized to, the thermal store can take inputs from a variety of differing technologies; pellet stoves, biomass boilers, heat pumps, under-floor heating, solar water heating systems, and wood burners. The benefits of HEATBANK How a thermal store works Thermal stores vary from conventional hot water cylinders in that water in the thermal store does not come out through the taps. In contrast the water going to the taps is heated by passing through a heat exchanger that transfers heat from the thermal store water to the mains water. Heat exchangers transfer heat extremely quickly; a mains pressure shower can be had or a bath filled exceptionally quickly. The water in the store is also used to drive central heating, as well as heating water for taps. This allows both central heating and hot water to be run of any of the connected heat sources e.g. a wood burner can be used to heat up the thermal store in the evenings and the thermal store will retain this heat to run radiators in the morning, without needing a boiler to turn on. Manages the difference in time between when heat is available and when it is needed e.g. Hot water produced by a solar water heating system during the day when the occupants are out can be stored for use in the evening when little or no solar energy is available Provides high pressure hot water to taps and showers, allowing numerous outlets to run at the same time, with water remaining potable (drinkable) Stored heat is used for both central heating as well as hot water, improving boiler efficiencies Enables a renewable heating system to work more efficiently Thermal store design Thermal stores are tall and thin; encouraging the natural tendency of heated water to form layers of heat, with the hottest at the top and the coldest at the bottom; commonly referred to as stratification. Stratification is beneficial in thermal stores and is actively encouraged by both the shape of the store and also by placing the cold feeds and returns at the bottom of the store and reducing the movement of water within it. Heating systems linked to thermal stores make the most of this by ensuring connections are placed at the point of maximum gain e.g. under-floor heating, which works at lower temperatures, would take heat from the lower part of the cylinder and heat for hot water would be taken from the top. Thermostats One or more thermostats are fitted to the thermal store allowing the temperature of the stored water to be monitored. If temperatures drop too low to meet demand, they can be topped up using additional means - boiler or immersion heater can be used to raise the water to the required temperature. Thermostats are arranged in a hierarchy up the store, allowing the cheapest/most carbon efficient heat source to be requested first e.g. solar would heat the entire store, but if more heat was needed than what the solar had produced/was producing, the bottom section of the thermal store would begin to get cold. As the cold section increases in size, the lowest positioned thermostat may for instance ask for a biomass boiler to come on. If the boiler was then not able to fulfil the heat requirements the next thermostat up might ask for a gas/oil boiler to come on. And so on and so on. The clever use of thermostats also allows the quantities of water that are heated up to be managed to match demand. e.g if a householder only requires small volumes of hot water for washing up, then the system will only prepare a small quantity of water, reducing the loss of efficiency that results from heating up more water that is required. The volumes of water prepared can be programmed into the system to match the patterns of use, providing the lowest possible running costs, while also ensuring there is enough hot water ready to go at times of peak demand. 28
Combining technologies A thermal store allows a number of different heating systems to be linked together e.g. a pellet stove and a solar water heating system; allowing hot water in the summer without having to light the stove. This is only one combination, just about anything can be connected to a thermal store: solar, biomass, heat pumps, under-floor heating, conventional boilers, aga s, immersion heaters. Thermal stores are the brains behind your heating and hot water system - all heat comes and goes from it. 33 Amazon Unvented Plate Recovery Where superior performance is desired when connected to boiler systems, the use of plate heat exchangers in place of primary coils is an option. This allows the quantities of generated hot water to go far beyond the capacities of standard coil type unvented cylinders. Amazon Unvented Biomass CHP We have developed advanced systems, generally for use in commercial properties. These are designed to maximise the performance of CHP boiler systems, typically running on biofuels (including second hand chip fat) and generating both hot water and electricity. Domestic and commercial ranges Reheat cylinders up to 250kW Heats water almost instantaneously, allowing continuous generation of hot water at rates limited only by boiler size Controls the amount of hot water generated, from a sink full to repeated baths When used in conjunction with solar panels, the system can vary the size of the reserved solar storage to match the weather When connected to a 40kW boiler, a standard 300 litre system can generate over 1,700 litres of hot water; enough for 15 generous baths or 30 showers Low boiler return temperatures Shares the advantages of plate heat exchanger recovery systems Recovery rates matched to boiler outputs, resulting in low return temperatures Backup electric options with twin 12kW heating elements, providing triple redundancy - never be without hot water Option for fitted heat meters and solar coil HEATBANK thermal store equivalent versions available Amazon Unvented Plate Recovery Amazon Unvented Biomass CHP 48.
