1 PRSRT STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID ADDISON, IL PERMIT NO. 91 Expanded Recycling Program! See page 2 for details. Village of Gurnee Solid Waste & Recycling Collection Guide 1411 OPUS PLACE DOWNERS GROVE, IL CUSTOMER SERVICE
2 The Village of Gurnee provides a comprehensive solid waste program designed to encourage recycling and waste reduction, reduce litter in our neighborhoods and ensure that waste is disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. This guide includes various services that are available to Gurnee residents. Waste Management pledges to continue the same high quality service we have provided in the past. If you have any questions, please call Customer Service at between 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. Expanded Recycling Program! You can now contact Waste Management to receive one 96-gallon cart on wheels for your recyclables at no extra charge. You can also reduce the size of your trash cart for a reduced rate on trash collection. This is part of an effort to increase recycling in Gurnee. Waste Management has integrated the latest sorting technologies in many of our facilities, enabling us to provide singlestream recycling, which allows customers to mix recyclable paper, plastic and glass in one cart. Please see pages 6-7 for Lake County s Curbside Recycling Guidelines to find out details about what you can recycle. Additional 96-gallon recycle carts are available for an added monthly charge. For more details, please contact Waste Management s Customer Service at between 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Disposing of Latex Paint Latex paint is not accepted at HCW collection events. For a small fee, Earth Paints Collection Systems will recycle your latex paint and can, producing new products. They have drop-off locations around the region Please contact them at (847) to find the nearest location. Visit SWALCO.org for ideas on how to reuse leftover paint. If you cannot find other alternatives, you can take the lids off the paint cans, add an absorbent such as kitty litter, sand, Oil-Dry or shredded paper, and when the liquid paint is absorbed, leave the lids off the paint cans and dispose in your regular waste (not recycling) for pick-up. PLEASE RETAIN THIS BROCHURE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE General Guidelines All solid waste materials must be placed out at the curb for collection by 6:00 a.m. the day of your scheduled collection, but not before 5:00 p.m. the day before your pick-up. Please keep in mind that separate trucks pick up trash, recycling and yard waste, so each of these materials may be picked up at different times of the day. Garbage and recycling should be separated by the drive and at least 5 feet from stationary objects (mailboxes, basketball hoops, vehicles, etc.). Carts should be placed handle toward house, along the curb. All containers and any solid waste materials that are not collected must be removed from the curb by 8:00 a.m. the day after your scheduled collection. Provided carts are the property of Waste Management and are not to be removed from the property. Village of Gurnee 325 N. O'Plaine Road Gurnee, IL Phone (847) Fax (847) Residents with questions or service related issues regarding the solid waste program may contact Waste Management directly at To pay your invoice online visit our website at: Waste Management 1411 Opus Place Downers Grove, IL
3 Disposing of Household Chemical Wastes Household Chemical Waste (HCW) and household hazardous waste are terms used to describe common products used in a variety of cleaning, painting, pest control and yard work activities. SWALCO will accept public drop-off of household chemical waste at the Gurnee facility. For Gurnee residents, appointments can be made for the second Saturday of every month and the fourth Monday of every month (except December). Schedule your online appointment at or by calling The following materials are typical household chemical wastes that are accepted at the HCW events. With our Think Green From Home recycling kits, you can safely recycle these materials for pennies a day, without going farther than your own mailbox. Designed for the safe storage and transport of discarded bulbs or batteries, the kits come with prepaid postage for shipping with the United States Postal Service. The bulbs and batteries are sent to our recycling facility where the recyclable materials and the mercury are separated for reuse. For more information visit Residential Electronics Recycling Beginning January 1, 2012, the Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act landfill ban for certain electronic devices will take effect. The following electronic items will no longer be accepted in either your regular trash or recycling container: TV s, monitors, printers, computers (including tablet computers), keyboards, mice, scanners, fax machines, VCR s, DVD players & recorders, portable digital music players, video game systems, small servers, satellite receivers, cable receivers and digital converter boxes. Gurnee residents should direct these and other household electronic items to a residential electronics recycling collection event hosted by SWALCO. For more information regarding residential electronics recycling opportunities, go to the SWALCO website at or call Carpeting & Construction Waste Carpeting: 1 roll per week in lieu of bulk item. Must be rolled, taped or tied and no more than 4 ft. long, 2 ft. in diameter and 50 lbs. in weight. To dispose of an appliance, please contact Got Junk at or call Environmental Field Services to arrange for pickup, or visit SWALCO.org for additional service providers.
