WSU Utilities WSU primary systems are all based on district type utilities rather than individual systems: Provides better service at lower maintenance and ownership cost Higher efficiencies Fewer components More professional attention available for a larger service area.

College Ave Steam Plant (CASP)

Grimes Way Steam Plant (GWSP)

Steam System Utilities The campus district steam system consists of two main plants: College Avenue and Grimes Way Steam supply and condensate return pipelines are routed through walking tunnels. There are some small individual heating systems distributed around campus, but the steam system serves the majority of campus square footage.

Boiler Plants College Avenue Steam Plant (CASP) Most recent remodel in 2003 with two new packaged 99MBTU gas-fired boilers Grimes Way Steam Plant (GWSP) 2004 three new gas/oil-fired packaged boilers, 99MBTU each permitted for natural gas and #2 fuels. Boilers and fuel storage are all equipped with appropriate fire control and suppression equipment.

Boiler Plants (continued) Future Considerations Reuse of previously abandon equipment. Implementation of Condensing Economizers and local hot water loops. Combined Heat and Power

Steam System Schematic Campus Buildings Grimes Way Steam Plant Metered Condensate College Ave. Steam Plant 100 psi Steam Distribution Collected condensate TANK All make up water and condensate are generated and processed at the Grimes Way plant. College Ave uses condensate return exclusively for feed water.

Steam and Condensate Steam piping is typically schedule 40. Runs through tunnels and in spite of it being nearly 100 years old it is in very good condition with minor deterioration-the result of effective water treatment and a decent return percentage. (20% or better) Tunnel design incorporates expansion and restraint methods Condensate control through traps and changes in section for piping. All condensate is pumped into common return piping which carries the condensate via gravity to College Avenue plant. Condensate not utilized at the College Avenue plant is pumped to the Grimes Way plant through piping in the tunnels. The campus condensate system is piped with schedule 80 steel pipe.

Steam tunnel showing 4160 electrical, steam and condensate, Data and Telecom wiring

Steam and Condensate Design Issues Thrusting, anchoring and expansion joints are often misunderstood Continual debates regarding tunnels or direct buried piping. Very little familiarity with ASME B31.1, the design guideline and code basis for steam piping practice.(piping and pressure vessels) Condensate Trapping is also misunderstood. Different pressures have different selection and installation procedures. Resist the temptation to lift condensate. Pressure relief connections require drip ell for structural reasons. Expansion joints. Distance and thrusting. Piping connections and take offs from tunnel to buildings. Oversizing water heaters and other steam devices. Venting condensate pumps The campus condensate system is piped with schedule 80 steel pipe.

Chilled Water System Initial plant built in 1975 with 11 Buildings connected 3000 tons capacity Current system 85 buildings connected 12,000 tons capacity 20,000 ton/hours of thermal storage Free cooling and process cooling applications System is modeled with software to keep track of present and future capacity issues. Pressure test requirements are a part of all new installations-200 psi Future: Adding chillers to stay current with N + 1 Redundancy Line extensions to maintain reasonable pressure loss-system operates at 15 to 20 # differential pressure Planned expansion to accommodate the 50 Year Master Plan
