BIOLET CAPACITY Capacity 3 people - full-time use (4 people with auxiliary fan) 4 people - part-time use (6 people with auxiliary fan) Weight Limit Maximum weight of a person sitting on the toilet is 158 kg Measurements and Weight Depth 73,6 cm Width 40 cm Height 63,5 cm BIOLET COMPONENTS 1. Top part 2. Seat 3. Compost Cover Button 4. Compost Cover 5. Compost Chamber 6. Compost Bin 7. Bowl Cap 8. Mounting holes 9. Bin handle 10. Air Outlet 11. Unit Base 12. Drain Outlet Installation of the composting toilet 2
The kit supplied (pipes) is normally sufficient to make the air connection. The tubes which are located in heated spaces need no insulation. The tubes that are located outside the heated space (attic, outside) do have an isolation: it is included. This insulation will quickly dissipate the air guaranteed (stable temperature). The tube ideally goes up to one meters above the roof space. On the top of the supplied iron net is engaged. It makes it to impossible for insects to enter. Moreover, it does not rain inside. Obviously, the opening is well sealed (eg silicone). 3
Possible directions of the air drains? 1. The pipes go straight up 2. The tubes have 2 kinks (elbows) of maximum 45 degrees each. 3. The tubes are 1 bend (elbow) of 45 degrees. All tubes (except the kinks) are simply included with the Biolet. Check before you start Look that enough air is coming in the toilet room. The incoming air should be internal air of the house (correct temperature) and not external air (temperature may be too low in winter). If your door has an opening of 1 to 3 cm below or above the door, this is sufficient. Alternatives can be ventillation, holes or other openings. You need sufficient place in front of the toilet to get the composting box out of the toilet : The floor below the toilet has a normal insulation (no external cold coming in). The 30 NE electric can work without power. If you use power for the ventilation unit, The connexion for power (normal 230 V) is present, distance for the cable is about 1,50 meter Installing the pipes (tubes) If possible all pipes go streigt up : - External part installed above the roof : o Length is 1 meter if possible 4
o Ideal solution is to come above the roof. Goal is to be sufficiently high (so that nobody smells an odour) - Allowed number of curves : o Maximum 2 o Maximum degree of the elbows is 45 o Use the Biolet elbows, not ones you buy yourself. You can always purchase such an elbow if needed at composttoilet.eu - Maximum total length of the tubes : o Straight up : 9,2 meter o with 2 curves (elbows of 45 ) : 8,2 meter - If you have to make a hole in the ceiling, the diameter should be : o 5,71 cm - About isolation around the pipes : o In a heated room (18 ) : not needed o Rooms that are not heated : yes please add - Installing the first pipes above the toilet (heated area without insulation) : o Pipe 1 connect it immediately to the toilet o Keep on connecting the pipes upwards until you come at the top part (eg sealing). Check that all pipes fit well. o Cut the last pipe linked to the roof in such a way that it comes above the roof. - Make sure that all openings are well closed (e.g. silicones) - Regarding the black insulation pipes : o Black pipe is used at least above the roof in the external part (protection against rain). o Install insect netting on the top of the roof o If you use rooms / areas where ther is no heating (temperature below 17 ) : use at lease the white insulation, you can add the black one too if desired. o Included in the standard kit : 2 black pipes o If you make an opening in the roof : Make sure the hole is somewhat larger than needed You can put the black plastic closing aroung the pipe if possible (ensures water resistance) Make sure it is closed totally afterwards (eg silicones) About the electric fan Presence of the unit : - The Biolet Separera 30 does already have an electrical unit. - The Separera 30NE does not have an electronical unit, but if ordered optionally it can be installed. The goal of the fan is to evacuate odours. Installing the optional electric fan on the 30 NE 5
Remove the top cover of the toilet Replace the empty cover by the complete electric fan (remove the screws, add the fan, And fix it with the screws) Aeration without and electric fan The aerobic organisms responsible for the composting process require free atmospheric or molecular oxygen to survive. Without oxygen, they will die and be replaced by anaerobic microorganisms that will slow the composting process and generate odors. For composting toilets to work most effectively, the materials being composted should be unsaturated with liquids, and have a loose texture to allow air to circulate freely within the pile. Maintaining aeration Maximum aeration can be achieved by: 1) Keeping the product inside the composting chamber in a loamy consistency. 2) Proper installation of the ventilation pipe. Keep in mind that the addition of any angles in the vent pipe will reduce the airflow. 3) Ensure a good flow of air to the bathroom from the living area. 4) Proper mixing of the product inside the composting chamber (manual mixing). Emptying the Compost Bin In a full-time residential setting, the compost bin should be emptied when the bin is about 3/4 the way full or once every 6 months, whichever comes first. In a part-time cabin/cottage setting, the compost bin should be emptied when the bin is about 3/4 the way full or once a year whichever comes first. 1. Remove the top of the toilet by lifting straight up. 2. Straighten the carrying handle on the bin into an upright position. 3. Remove the primary bin and move it outside to finish composting.
4. Place the secondary bin into the unit with the curved end facing the front of the unit. 5. Place the carrying handle in the down position to the rear of the toilet. 6. Pour in enough Starter Mulch to make a 5 cm covering inside the bin. 7. Replace the top of the unit, ensuring it is evenly sitting on the base. If the secondary bin contains humus, dispose of it by adding it to an existing outside compost pile for finishing or when an existing compost pile is not available, by mixing it with soil or compost and trench it in around ornamental trees and plants and cover it with a minimum of 13 cm topsoil. White plastic housing with the primary unit in it On the right the secondary unit Urine Drainage The Biolet Separera models allow the urine to overflow to a unit that is located below the toilet. 1
The urine overflow goes trough the tube that is connected on the back of the toilet (lower part) This tube can be fixed with a ring. popp 1
This option requires soil with good permeability. In this case you will add sand : this will be the area with permeability. In this case the container will hold the urine. A container can be ordered optionally or you can use a container yourself. 2
The optional container. This can be spread out in your garden : the one part of urine can be mixed with 8 parts of water. Starting up the toilet 1. Open the compost cover by pressing on the toilet seat. 2. Add some water and a part of the starter mulch in the toilet. (This is only to keep the mulch from dusting) 3. Add at least half of the bag of starter mulch into the toilet. 4. The toilet is ready to use The first month of use The first month is important to start the composting and the use in each family is different. You will quickly learn what is the most optimum use of your Biolet in the first month. - Too much fluid in the lowest composting part (humus tray, number 11 in the Biolet scheme) o When you look at the toilet : this is the transparant plastic tube on the right side below. o If the fluid level is going up : you will see it in this tube o Although your Biolet will accelarate the heating automatically, you could also adjust the heating level manually. - The upper composting chamber : (number 8 in the Biolet scheme) o The goal is that there is sufficient mostoire (the humus should not be completely dry). With a normal use of the toilet this should be OK. 3
o If the humus is too dry : Put the thermostate a little bit lower If really needed add some water After a while you automatically know what to do. What to do with the compost : - In a composting unit - Use in your garden : yes - Use in your garden for vegetables : first put it 6 more months in your composting unit Biolet electrical consumption The peak power is: - Heating: not present - Mixer motor: not present - Fan: 14 watts (air evacuation is around 0,6 m3 per minute) Other advice Avoid that windows are open for a long time in the toilet area (is not needed for the smell : all smells go away trough the pipe) No cigarettes in the toilet. If you want to work on the toilet : swith off the electrity. Toilet paper in het toilet - Toilet paper can go in the toilet : no problem - You do not need special paper (avoid to strong paper) - If too much paper in the toilet : o Is being composted rapidy when it gets wet o So : Add some water Mixer moter will mix it Urine makes it wet too Clean the toilet 4
- The inner part does not need a lot of cleaning - Cleaning : in general a brush and water is sufficient. Soap is not needed, if you use it : use a minimum, biological products are safer. - Avoic strong detergents If you do not use the toilet for a while - When you leave the house and you will not use it : o Put the protection cover on the toilet - When you come back and start using it : o Normally start using is as before o Add some mulch if you thing it is needed : o Humus is hard : add some water. Possible add some humus. - 5
