1 Installation and handlinginstructions for Mullis biological toilets. Please read the instruction before starting the installation and follow the handlinginstructions. The systems best functional temperature is between +18 and +25 degrees Celsius. At 7 C the biological process standstill. In order to get the best results it is important to put the container in a place that is warm enough all through the year. If this can t be done, you will need to isolate either the room or the container itself. It is also important to have a good ventilated area. Please be careful, the container can be sharp-edged in some places.

2 Installation of Mullis biological toilets 1. Decide the location of the toiletseat in the room and put it on the desired place. Check if there is enough space under the house for the Mullis container of your choice. Also make sure there are no beams or walls in the way of montage. 2. Draw the outline profile of the seats lower edge. Mark the contours for the holes on the floor. 270 or 200 mm, depending on the seat of your choice. If you have a seat with urine separation, also mark this hole. Take up the holes with a jigsaw tool.

3 3. After this you can easily decide the right place of the container. It is imortant that it s standing steady. The soil has to be welldrained and be able to carry a weight of 500 kg without sinking. If you are building a new space please make the dimensions a little bit larger so final adjustments can be made for the placement of the container. There also have to be enough space in front of the emptying hatch, wich is placed at the lower shortside. 4. Bellow the emptying hatch there is a hole for the level hose. Put a string of silicone around the hole and take the plastic device from the inside of the container and thread it firmly. Than stick the hose on to it with a hose clip.

4 Montage of porcelainseats The stainless joining pipe should be hanged in the flange at the floor. Put it about 30 mm below the containers roof. Don t forget the holes for the urine separation. Then put the porcelainseat on it s place and put joint sealant around the hole in the floor. Montage of plastic seats The stainless joining pipe should be hanged in the flange at the floor. If you skrew the skrews a bit skewed into the floor the seat becomes more stable. Put back the possible hygenic inset.

5 Ventilation How the ventilation is drawn depends on the choice of toiletseat. For porcelainseats the waste air is taken directly from the container, while from the plastic seats it is taken through the seat. Please contact a firm of ventilation to get everything right. The waste air-pipe should be 110 mm of diameter and be drawn as straight as possible to get the best ventilation. 1. Plummet the hole in the ceiling and drill or saw up a hole with 110 mm diameter. Keep plummet to the roof and make one as large hole there. 2. Then montage the ventilationpipe at the seat or the container and make sure it is a bit over the roof-ridge for best results. 3. Seal at the roof where the pipe comes up. 4. Isolate the pipe at the attic and over the rooftop. 5. Put the protecting pipe (in stainless steel) over the isolation. 6. Montage the sleeve coupling at the protecting pipe. 7. Last but not the least, put the weather vane on the protecting pipe, to keep it stable.

6 About Mullis Mullis is constructed to maintain the mouldering procedure, where human waste, food waste and vegatables are decomposed by oxygen, heat and microorganisms. Mullis has a unique construction, which makes the bed of wastes to decompose without a bad smell. Gases and evaporated liquids are conducted out through the ventilation pipe, which has its opening above the roof. The well-balanced inclined container in stainless steel makes sure that the night soil and wastes moves at the correct speed towards the hatch where you empty the composed material. The emptying of finished compost occurs different times and depends of the temperatur. Normally this is done once a year. A Mullis package contains a toiletseat in plastic, a container (size of your choice) in stainless steel and the stainless joiningpipe. As accessories we have porcelain seat, urine separation, ventilationpipe, protectingpipe, sleeve couplings, wheather vane and more. The best temperature for this process is +18 to +25 C. If it goes below 7 degrees the process standstill. In theese cases you can install a radiator under the container. The heat will help the mouldering process not to stop at cold wheather. 7 Urine separation By separating the urine the risk of odor are reduced and the dry feaces are easier to manage and compost. It s also an environmental gain, because the urine can be used as a fertilizer. A closed system tank provides better decay. The procurement of urine in the urine serves for irrigation during the growing season. 10 For the mouldering toilet to work satisfying there is a need of regular inspection of the waste. When the first stack is getting big enough it should be raked down. Fill the area under the dividing wall with almost done mould. This is easily made by push the material, a little bit before the dividing wall, in between the air channels with a small shovel. During time the mould compartment is being filled. This compartment should allways be full. It will take the moister and spread it to the area above. Rake up a hole to build a form of stop edge. Rake down the first stack in to the hole. Fill it with material from the stop edge. In this way you mix new material with partly decomposed material and this will speed up the mouldering process. When you during the year done this process it is time to empty the decomposed material. A mouldering toilet has an ongoing decomposing process. No directions are therefor strict. It all depends on the amount of liquid, the temperature and the amount of mould in

11 the system and the total needs at the moment of the decomposing material. Handling and maintainance While using Mullis biological toilet, please notice the following: sit down at usage urinate in the urinebowl never put paper or such us in the urinebowl rinse the urinebowl with water once in a while, use soap for cleaning strew peat moss over the feaces don t use chemicals Mullis is designed for night soil and organic waste from kitchen and garden. Do not throw metall, plastic, glass, cartonnage or other non-decayable material. Cleaning Mullis toilet seats in plastic have a hygenic inset which is easily removed and cleaned. Do not use chemicals, because these can damage the decomposing process. Operational disorder Liquid at the emptying area can occasionally occure with overload of urine. But it can also depend on bad or non-existing ventilation. Check if the draught is bad. In that case a fan should be installed. If the container and the decomposing part is in a cold area, it should be isolated.this goes for the ventilationpipe as well. Otherwise the decomposing process will stop during the cold time of year. Even though you can still add waste thanks to the big capacity of Mullis. To keep the process going on all the time you can install a radiator. The night soil can build up a mound under the toilet seat. It can depend on too large usage of paper. In this case you should flatten it over a bigger area in the container. Flies Make sure there is a fly screen at the air intake at the container. You can also add ashes or sawdust into the container. Emptying After 3-5 years you should be emptying ready-made mould for the first time. Thereafter once a year. Every year you empty around 25 litre mould.
