5 Green Thumb PAGE 5 The following is the official press release about the Garden Club s tree donation to Birch State Park Fort Lauderdale Garden Club Continues Restoring Roots The FLGC was formed in 1927 to help restore the natural beauty of Fort Lauderdale after the disastrous hurricane of 1926 that devastated south Florida. The history of the Fort Lauderdale Garden Club is an enduring record of civic achievements and dedication to beautifying our city s landscape. In 1930 they planted the stately Royal Palms that grace Las Olas. In 1964 they dedicated 100 trees to Birch Sate Park after hurricane Cleo. They have continued to plant trees throughout the years, maintain the Sensory Garden at the Lighthouse of Broward, and in collaboration with local schools, offer students the hands on opportunities of growing plants through our Youth Gardening Program. To Commemorate our 90th Anniversary, The Fort Lauderdale Garden Club has donated 124 native trees and plants indigenous to Birch State Park, as a Hurricane Irma Restoration Project. This project was partially funded through the National Garden Clubs. Inc., Natural Disaster USA Fund. The tree and plant species were determined in collaboration with park staff biologists. The bay cedars, pigeon plums, black ironwood, willow bustic, Jamaican caper, golden beach creeper, necklace pod, marlberry and Hercules club, are all historically native to Birch State Park. The Fort Lauderdale Garden Club built its headquarters at the Glenn F. Bates in Hugh Taylor Birch State Park in 1951 and has called it home ever since. All General Meetings are open to the Public and free of charge.
