3 Autumn s Colors On View October 4 November 18 The crisp fall air heralds the emergence of golden hues, native asters, and graceful meadow grasses in our Gardens. Take a nature walk through our Meadow Garden or delight in the sounds of children s laughter in our Pumpkin Playground and along our Garden Railway. Set your heart aglow throughout October when Asian-inspired lanterns adorn our Conservatory. Starting October 25, chrysanthemums meticulously grown into unique forms are the stars of Chrysanthemum Festival. In November, join us for our Silk Road performing arts series, as we explore the rich culture of this ancient trade route. This autumn, it s all about amazement.

Our narrated Fountains Then and Now show at 11:15 am and 3:15 pm showcases our newest fountain features. Our 1:15 pm and 5:15 pm shows are set to a variety of musical genres sure to please. In addition to our Main Fountain Garden, don't miss our Open Air Theatre fountain shows. Shows run daily at 10:15 am, 12:15 pm, 2:15 pm, 4:15 pm, and 5:55 pm. 6 Chrysanthemum Festival On View October 25 November 18 Experience the largest display of exhibition chrysanthemums in the United States. Our horticulture experts work daily throughout the seasons to meticulously nurture and train more than 17,000 chrysanthemums into giant orbs, spirals, pagodas, columns, and even more unique forms including a traditional fan shape making its debut this year. In late October, the unveiling of the Thousand Bloom Mum a single plant bearing more than 1,500 perfect blooms takes our display to a whole new level. The result is simply astounding.

8 Highlights from Our Gardens Follow the Fellows: Journey Along with our Fellows Cohort (1) We re thrilled to welcome the five talented professionals selected for the cohort of our Fellows Program. Sadie Barber from the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, Scotland; Eleanor Gould from Thomas Jefferson s Monticello in Charlottesville, VA; Erin Hepfner from Polly Hill Arboretum on Martha s Vineyard; Chelsea Mahaffey from Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, VA; and Caroline Tait from Coton Manor Garden and Caroline Tait Garden Designs in Northampton, UK together represent Longwood s second Fellows Program cohort, now embarking on our 13-month immersive, residential Fellows Program that develops global leaders in the field of public horticulture. During their time as Fellows, the cohort will develop and refine their leadership skills, become immersed in the culture of Longwood and other regional public horticulture organizations, participate in a mentoring program, complete coursework, and then fulfill a twomonth field placement at a domestic or international garden, all while working collectively on a single project that spans the duration of the program. As our Fellows navigate their 13-month learning experience on what it means to be a leader in the changing world of public horticulture, we invite you to experience the journey with them. Main Fountain Garden Garners Worldwide Accolades (2) Our guests aren t the only ones loving our revitalized Main Fountain Garden. Following the May 2017 return of the Main Fountain Garden, the project and its design team have been the recipient of more than a dozen awards. Together with our revitalization partners, Longwood used an adaptive restoration concept to preserve the garden, honor the vision of founder Pierre S. du Pont, and ensure the continued enjoyment of its fountains. We collaborated with more than 80 design teams and firms across the globe, and our successful revitalization was rooted in the efforts of our partners. Our design team included architectural design team Beyer Blinder Belle, lighting design firm L Observatoire International, landscape architecture firm West 8, and water feature design and engineering firm Fluidity Design Consultants. Beyer Blinder Belle received the 2018 Palladio Award from Traditional Building Magazine and 2018 Grand Jury Preservation Award from the Philadelphia Preservation Alliance. In addition to Beyer Blinder Bell s accolades, L Observatoire International received a 2017 Best of Design Award from The Architect s Newspaper, while West 8 received an American Society of Landscape Architects Professional Award. Many others, including local firms, have also been recognized for their work in their specific trades. Bancroft Construction Company, for one, received a Pyramid Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors national association. We applaud all of our partners and look forward to enjoying the results of their expertise for many years to come.

11 The Art of Chrysanthemum Bonsai (3) Some of the most intriguing chrysanthemums in our display this year may also be some of the smallest. Longwood s Horticulture Specialty Grower Kevin Bielicki, who joined Longwood as our bonsai collection curator in January 2018, notes the increased variety of gnome chrysanthemum bonsai utilized because of their small flower size that will be on view this year. Approximately 80 chrysanthemum bonsai in orange, yellow, white, purple, and red will be featured in the display. When you look at the entire Chrysanthemum Festival display, our bonsai will represent more organic shapes, mimicking what you d see in nature, but scaled down, shares Bielicki, likening bonsai to an aging art form and one that requires patience and imagination. Bielicki s background is rooted not only in bonsai curation, but also in art. Holding a Master of Fine Arts from the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University, Bielicki s artistic endeavors outside of horticulture center on abstract wood sculpture, in which the rhythm and repetition of his artwork are influenced by his work with bonsai. Preparation for the chrysanthemum bonsai and their eventual October and November display period begins in mid-january prior, when cuttings are first taken, potted, and re-potted as the cuttings grow and develop. Moved outside to full sun starting in May, the chrysanthemum bonsai are trained as soon as they are large enough. Each tree s intended style and shape must be determined from the very start, achieved through constant and rhythmic pruning, wiring, and pinching as growth dictates. Repotting and pinching runs through August, followed by an application of a growth regulator, which will reduce the length of the pedicel or stalk bearing an individual flower and lead to a more compact plant. Disbudding happens just before flowering, timed perfectly to allow the tree to force more energy into each singular flower and help the flower open larger. Once the flower buds are set, the trees are placed into display containers for final development and enjoyment just in time for the Chrysanthemum Festival. Travel the Sounds of the Silk Road (4) This season, we re excited to showcase both floral artistry and the musical essence of the Far East during our Chrysanthemum Festival, as we present three performances that celebrate the sounds of the Silk Road the ancient network of trade routes that connected the East and West. These special performances celebrate the Silk Road s many influencing cultures and voices, perfectly showcased amid the diverse chrysanthemum forms displayed in our Conservatory. It s always our goal, when possible, to create a connection between Longwood s performing arts and horticulture, says Director of Performing Arts Tom Warner. To do that, we engage with a variety of artists and a high caliber of artists that match the variety and quality of our horticultural display. This season s Silk Road offerings will open on Saturday, November 3 with Original Quartet Andalusia: The Origins of Flamenco (sold out), which takes guests on an exploration of the roots of flamenco music. On Saturday, November 10, the banjo-guzheng duo of Grammy Award-winning artist Abigail Washburn and zither master Wu Fei present a unique adaptation of Appalachian and Chinese folk songs. Our Silk Road offerings close on Friday, November 16 when small ensembles from The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia spotlight music and composers both influenced by and originating from the Silk Road. 13 The Rigors of Preparing for Our Chrysanthemum Festival Our Chrysanthemum Festival is known for its rare cultivars, meticulously-nurtured forms, and imaginative displays but you may not necessarily know all the steps and considerations taken behind the scenes to ensure its success. We take more than a year to prepare for each Chrysanthemum Festival, growing and nurturing all of the large, specialty chrysanthemums both indoors and out, which raises some unique challenges. Our cascade chrysanthemums start in our production greenhouses in the form of stock plants. We take cuttings from those stock plants each December prior to Chrysanthemum Festival, and the cuttings remain in the greenhouses until the last of that year s frost before we move them outdoors in May. While they re indoors, we focus on growing them to their desired length under controlled conditions, shares Senior Grower Jason Simpson, who oversees the cascade chrysanthemum program. Once they re moved outdoors, that control goes out the window and we work with Mother Nature. Chrysanthemums require constant fertilization. If we experience heavy rainfall and they become overwatered, the plants can lose their required fertilizer and be susceptible to nutrient deficiencies and such diseases. Last May, for example, we experienced so much rainfall that our horticulture team had to cover the root ball of each chrysanthemum with plastic in order to dry out each plant and help keep the root systems healthy and disease-free. We also contend with heat, utilizing shade cloths to keep the chrysanthemums cool and thriving, especially when temperatures reach the 90s. If we re uncomfortable in the heat, so are they, remarks Simpson. We re constantly keeping an eye on each and every plant and testing their conditions. From the time the cascade chrysanthemum forms are moved outside in May until the time they re put on display in October, we run a weekly soil test to make sure ph and electrical conductivity influenced by salts from the fertilizer are at an optimum level. Our inventive Chrysanthemum Festival display will be extraordinary this year, with pagodas, clouds, columns, and many more beautiful forms including our beloved Thousand Bloom Mum and, new this year, a traditional fan form taking center stage. Spanning seven feet, the fan includes the white Yamanoha-no-Kumo cultivar along the majority of the fan s surface area, surrounding a striking red Kurume circle in the center of the fan symbolizing the Japanese flag and, ultimately, the origin of chrysanthemum display.

28 A Longwood Christmas On View November 22, 2018 January 6, 2019 This holiday season we pay homage to the Christmas tree with an imaginative display of traditional favorites and inspiring new twists, with festive firs suspended from above to towering tannenbaums created from books, stained glass, and other unexpected materials. NEW: Member Reservations Required Every Day After 2 pm New this year, Members may visit anytime, but require free timed Member reservations every day during A Longwood Christmas if visiting after 2 pm. Gardens Premium Members and those included in their Membership level do not require reservations. Member reservations are limited, and sell out is likely. With a timed Member reservation, you may enter the Gardens as early as a halfhour before or as late as a half-hour after your entry time. Later or earlier arrivals cannot be accommodated. You may stay as long as you wish once you enter the Gardens. Member Guests & General Admission Buy Before You Arrive Timed Tickets Required Tickets Limited Admission to A Longwood Christmas is by Timed Admission Ticket only with tickets issued for a specific date and time. Guests not included in a Membership require a Timed Admission Ticket. We cannot accommodate a Member s request for tickets if we are sold out. Purchase in advance as tickets sell out. Using Complimentary Guest Tickets? Many complimentary admission tickets are not valid on Peak Days. Check your tickets as restrictions may apply. Parking Longwood offers free parking and transportation is provided between remote parking and the Gardens. For Your Convenience Longwood Gardens covers many acres. There are no shuttles within the Gardens. We re happy to offer the following: Non-motorized wheelchairs, electric scooters, and children s strollers are available on a firstcome basis for a fee. Supply limited, reservations not accepted. Scooters are not available during rainy, snowy, or freezing weather.
