3 A Longwood Christmas On View November 23, 2017 January 7, 2018 There is only one way to describe our French-inspired holiday display c est magnifique! Our exquisite Conservatory is reminiscent of the splendor of Versailles with fanciful topiaries, imaginative wreaths, ornate mirrors, and more than 50 trees trimmed in sparkling crystal ornaments. Thousands of floating cranberries, apples, and gilded walnuts create an intricate mosaic in the grand tradition of a French parterre garden. Outside, colorful fountains dance to holiday music, strolling carolers herald the season with song, and a wonderland of a half-million twinkling lights await. Celebrate the holidays with us à la française!

18 Highlights from Our Gardens A Palatial Music Room Display (1) The Hall of Mirrors at The Palace at Versailles in France is the inspiration for this year s regal Music Room display. The glow of 156 candles illuminate the grand room, as all eyes are drawn to a 12-footlong, hand-crafted mirrored table set for a lavish Christmas Eve fête. Towering mirrors adorned with garland create an illusion of elegant expansiveness, while two 18-foot Fraser fir trees trimmed with bundles of silvery white Lunaria and glittering silver, gold, pearl, and red ornaments add to the opulence. A twinkling candlelit archway leads to a glistening wall fountain created using pieces from our old Main Fountain Garden. The fountain is surrounded by conical Chamaecyparis topiaries completing the grand setting. A Jolly Ole Stout (2) It s going to be a very cherry Christmas in our Beer Garden! Throughout A Longwood Christmas enjoy our newest seasonal collaboration with Victory Brewing Company, Longwood Seasons: Cherry Oatmeal Stout, brewed with cherries grown in our Idea Garden. This beer is a true collaboration between our horticulturists who handpicked more than 100 pounds of SK Carmine Jewel and Rigewood Black Gold cherries, our chefs at 1906 who juiced more than 30 liters of cherry juice, and Victory Brewing Company s brewers who developed the final product. This almost-black stout features the taste of rich dark malts with hints of marzipan and cherries, with a nice light backbone of vanilla. Developed exclusively for Longwood Gardens, enjoy this limited-edition brew before it is gone. How Do You Like These Apples? (3) Our Exhibition Hall is transformed into a colorful, floating mosaic this holiday season that evokes a traditional French parterre garden. An estimated 670,000 cranberries, 8,000 'Granny Smith' apples, and 3,000 gilded walnuts combine to create a swirling pattern, inspired by clamshell motifs from Versailles, fleur-de-lis, and the botanical flourishes in a sketch by artist and landscape architect William Andrews Nesfield ( ). To keep the fruit and walnuts in place, our carpenters designed a lightweight structural form using plywood and metal just tall enough to contain and separate the fruit, but invisible when viewed from above. To install the design, the form is placed on the floor then every apple, walnut, and cranberry gets arranged prior to flooding the floor. Adding to the display, six twinkling trees stand among the floating fruit and walnuts. Ranging in height from 12 to 9 feet, the trees are placed from largest to smallest with the intention of elongating the perspective, much like the design of our Italian Water Garden.

20 Celebrating Women in Horticulture Women have always held a place of distinction at Longwood and have played an important role in making Longwood one of the great gardens of the world. In 2018 our Community Read and Continuing Education courses are recognizing the role of women in horticulture. The national bestseller Lab Girl by Hope Jahren is our Community Read book. This fascinating memoir invites you along on Jahren s journey to become a scientist. For our youngest readers, we have chosen two books, The Tree Lady by H. Joseph Hopkins, and Women in Science, written and illustrated by Rachel Ignotofsky. The Tree Lady (for ages 4 10) tells the true story of Kate Sessions, a girl who loved trees, wasn t afraid to get her hands dirty, and was fascinated by science. Women in Science (for middle and high school grades) highlights the contributions of 50 notable women to the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) from ancient times to the modern world. Our Continuing Education lineup includes several courses that highlight the contributions of women both in Philadelphia and on the international stage. The Elements of Design Tour: Philadelphia s Women of Horticulture takes you to The Ambler Arboretum of Temple University; Andalusia, the birthplace of the Garden Club of America, and Wyck; the oldest rose garden in the country. Our Heroines of Horticulture book chats highlight top female floral designers, landscape designers, and gardeners that have shaped horticulture. For more information about our Community Read and to register for 2018 Continuing Education courses visit longwoodgardens.org. America s Garden Capital Maze at Dilworth Park Returns On View November 10, 2017 February 25, 2018 Wintergarden at Dilworth Park returns for a second holiday season at City Hall in Center City, Philadelphia.
