This year, the chapter will present the 43rd rendition of this much anticipated annual event at the University Club in Palo Alto on Friday, June 17. Needless to say, technology has come a long way since that first show, and we will be taking advantage of that with a fantastic multi-media presentation highlighting some of the best landscape projects in our chapter and in the state! 2 2016 Garden Tour a Personal Best Despite the rain, the 2016 Garden Tour went off without a hitch. We loaded the bus with sandwiches and drinks, hit the road, and viewed 7 sites in 5 hours a SFBA chapter Personal Best! Thanks to Todd Bradrick of Maniglia Landscape Inc., a partner of the Celtic Group Inc., we started the tour with Google Tech Corners. From swing sets to Zen gardens, bioswales and rain gardens, the site gave us a taste of inviting, creative outdoor space solutions for a relaxed yet productive commercial site created for Google employees, their friends and families. Next up was lunch and a tour with Patti Berryhill of the SFBA 2015 Chapter Project: Walter Hays Elementary School s Living Classroom. These gardens are ecological laboratories that provide beautiful and stimulating outdoor learning environments. Thanks to the new garden planters and drip irrigation system, the gardens have been host to 65 lessons for the children in grades K-3 this year. Francisco Quezadaz of Skyline Landscapes, Inc., and dynamic duo designers Cristine Mortensen and Astrid Gaiser worked on the first residential site on our tour. From the eye-popping and fragrant roses in the front yard (Cristine) to the daunting installation of concrete entertaining artistry in the back yard (Astrid), which replaced a turf area that was no longer in use, the site was impressive. Continuing the thread of creativity to the max while keeping in mind the 4R s (Recycle, Re-use, Reduce, and Re-purpose), Fanny Obadia of Green Thumbs Up Inc. shared her Heavy Metal Vegetable Garden, inspired by the recent reconstruction of highway 101. Her design incorporated an edible garden (planters with 101 steel siding) in the front yard, with an area for entertaining and a private meditation corner in the back yard. Rick Camin of Camin Landscaping worked with architect Randy Thueme on the redesign of a new home. Rick made this (continued on page 4) Above: Todd Bradrick leads the tour at Google Tech Corners. 3 A Message from the President SFBA Chapter One of Best in the State! By Todd Bradrick, The Celtis Group Hello everyone and Happy June! The days are getting long enough to play some golf after work. Many of our large projects are in full swing. It is a good time to live in the Silicon Valley. Well, except for the increased traffic. Our professional sports teams are mostly doing really well. There seems to be plenty of landscape related work to go around. We are very fortunate. I went to my first CPC meeting in Sacramento in April. It was nice to see most of the other chapter presidents there. Regan Barry from Coastal Evergreen and the Central Coast Chapter did a great job running the meeting. CLCA Executive Director Sandra Giarde gave us an update on the goings on at the state level and some new items coming up. Plans for the CLCA Annual Convention in Paso Robles are moving full steam ahead. It will be a fun time at a great venue. The online Find My Contractor search is being updated to become more useful. I was very proud to hear that our SFBA Chapter is considered one of the best in California. That remains true only because of our members enthusiasm, volunteerism and participation all of which we so greatly appreciate and enjoy year after year. Keep up the good work everyone! At our last board meeting we decided to try to generate a Contractor s Forum in the Bay Breeze. This column will contain anything interesting industry related or not that any contractor or associate member would like to contribute in writing. You can even include a picture. Keep it brief and light hearted. Minimize politics. We have heard enough of that lately. Send your submission ( words) to our editor Jerrie Beard at mail@beardassociates.com. It s time to strap on you light saber and get ready for SCAPE WARS! All the judging has been completed and the winners decided. Now it s time to sit back and watch it unfold on Friday, June 17. Be sure to make your reservations for this scape-tacular event. And, don t forget to thank all the award sponsors who so generously support this event. Calendar of Events June Chapter Awards Banquet. 4 (continued from page 2: Garden Tour) project look easy by installing what is in artistic terms a simple design with the contemporary, smooth concrete finished entryways, patios, and a BBQ from the front to the back of the yard. At our sixth stop, Ian Harris of Harris Landscaping, Inc. and his team expertly installed Astrid Gaiser s design for both the front and back yards of a new home in Palo Alto. The home s footprint and taller design impacted the garden space considerably, as did the already existing guesthouse. All plantings also needed to underline the colors of the house and the playful character of the garden. The challenge was beautifully met and the house and garden truly fit. Our final site, installed by Samscaping Inc. and Julie Orr of Julie Orr Design, is a 2014 SFBA Chapter Award winner (First Place for Best Custom Residential Project). This project is an Empty Nester s dream come true. A water feature made to match one the owner saw at a hotel in Los Angeles provides a visual feature that makes one think of an impressionist s masterpiece. The louvered arbor system with side screening for an outdoor heated family room (complete with a flat screen TV) pushed the boundaries on the conceptual design. A huge thanks to the tour guides, contractors, designers and helpers! 5 Contractor Forum: Thank You in Advance to CLCA By Barry Cohen I am in the process of selling my business and retiring. After more than 40 years in CLCA, I ve served in almost every position, chapter and state, and have received almost every award given by CLCA. We have participated, both in state and chapter award competitions from day 1. I ve been on the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter board for almost the entire time I ve been a member. Due to CLCA, my circle of friends consists of mostly state and chapter people. Tons of the success and knowledge I ve accumulated is due to my involvement with CLCA. I plan to be present and involved for the rest of this year with the company and subsequently continue with CLCA as a Life Member. I will always be available for consulting and mentoring my fellow contractor members, old and new. Thank you! Take Your Website MOBILE! Add a mobile-responsive site to your web presence, and make it even easier for clients to find you. We can help. Jerrie Beard & Associates info@beardassociates.com June
