With this in mind, a little acronym comes to mind PaRK. As Affiliates, Cleveland Botanical Garden is the ideal PARK for us. How do we best enjoy it? By following my acronym: o Participate: in Affiliate activities at the Garden there are so many! Here are a few: Create a tabletop design for Big Spring Design a Childhood Memories container garden for the summer in the Hershey Children s Garden Create an awesome scarecrow for fall decorating in the Garden Decorate a spectacular tree for Glow 2014 (the theme is History of Cleveland/Western Reserve) Attend either Affiliate Day (April 24) or Affiliate evening at Glow (date tbd) Join us for an Affiliate Round Table (the first one is coming soon, on March 6) Share your club s sales, shows and activities via The Root, our monthly publication o Renew: Double-check and ensure that your Club renewed its Affiliate Membership, AND double-check that your personal or family membership is current, too! o Konnect: Let Cleveland Botanical Garden be the place where you connect with other Affiliates on days when we are together at the Garden, as well as outside of the Garden. Let the Garden also be the place where you connect by bringing family and friends to experience all that the Garden has to offer, year-round! Dues Update: As of the printing of this newsletter, we have fewer than 30 Affiliate Garden Club renewals for These include at least 3 new members! Knowing that we have many events coming up this spring which require Club membership, I m hoping that more will arrive any day now. One of our benefits is the ability to promote our clubs via this newsletter, and those who are not current with their memberships are unable to be included. Big Spring Opportunities for Affiliates For the 2nd annual Big Spring celebration, the Garden would love to showcase the creativity and talent of our Affiliate Garden Club members via tablescapes. The theme is Botanical Fantasy think Alice in Wonderland and larger than life. Your week will be assigned upon registration. Hershey Children s Garden 2014 Summer Container Gardens Theme The Hershey Children s Garden theme for summer container gardens will be A Child s Garden of Memories. Please see pages 4 and 5 for details! News & Announcements from Affiliates Greater Cleveland Orchid Society Sale & Show: Runs this weekend, February as part of the Garden s Orchid Mania. Come and see the judges picks in the following classes: 1) art featuring images of orchids in media such as oils, acrylics, pastels and botanical illustration 2) photography featuring images of orchids in both color and black and white 3) collectibles which include creator-entered objects such as clothing, pottery, jewelry and quilts featuring images of orchids and 4) orchids in use including arrangement and corsages. Entries will be on display until the show closes at 4 pm on Sunday, February 16. For more details, please contact Cas McBride at tcmcbride@windstream.net. Organic Gardening for Houseplants and Outdoors at Wildwood Cultural Center Mark Occhionero, owner of Top Garden Products in Mentor, will talk about Organic Gardening for Houseplants and Outdoors at Wildwood Cultural Center, 7645 Little Mountain Road, Mentor, on Wednesday, February 19 at 10 am. The program is presented by Wildwood Garden Club. Graduating from Xavier University in 1995 with a business degree and a minor in botany, Mark Occhionero has gained most of his knowledge through experience and great mentors over the past 18 years. His company sells supplies for the indoor and outdoor garden enthusiast specializing in organic nutrients and carries a wide variety of indoor garden lighting. The lecture is free and open to the public. Nonmembers may call to register. Wildwood Garden Club is a member of the Garden Club of Ohio, Inc. (Cleveland District), Central Atlantic Region and National Garden Clubs, Inc. The Club meets the third Wednesday of the month from September through June.

3 Cactus & Succulent Show & Sale: Join Midwest Cactus & Succulent Society for this popular annual sale and show at Cleveland Botanical Garden on Saturday, March 22, and Sunday, March 23, during general operating hours at the Garden. In addition to the show and sale, Bill Hendricks of Klyn Nurseries will present Hiking Sedona at 2 pm each day. Sale, show & program are free with Big Spring admission. Glow 2013 Recap from your President Glow just kept going and glowing! Our Affiliate Garden Club trees did so much more than create a fantastical, creative, beautiful atmosphere for Glow 2013 their impact spread well beyond the Garden! The North Ridgeville Garden Club joined us for the first time during Glow 2013, and their local newspaper found out about their participation and was present on decorating day. Inspired, local officials asked Gloria Hearns, Affiliate Representative, if their Club would reproduce their tree for the North Ridgeville Library for Christmas 2014, thus making it available for all the citizens of North Ridgeville! Fairview Park Garden Club has participated in several of the Garden s Winter Show/Glow celebrations. This year, their dream catcherthemed tree (each one made by a Club member, and the berries, grasses and grapevines that filled the tree were items from their own gardens) piqued the interest of the Fairview Park mayor. Their beautiful representation of a well-known Native American artifact will come to life again in December 2014 at the Fairview Park Recreation Center. The Ridgewood Garden Club of Parma had such an overwhelming Club member response to their Mitten Garden theme that they were able to make two trips to deliver gloves and mittens to the Parma Family Collaborating Center once when they first decorated, and again when they undecorated. What a great way to support their own community! Another community project was the Books of Dreams theme used by Four Corners Garden Club for their tree. When all of the books were removed after Glow, they were delivered to a local program for young readers. These are just the stories told to me I am sure there are more fantastical stories to be told! The incredible thing about our work is that it is not limited to decorating one tree, but rather our beautiful trees can develop lives of their own, impacting so many throughout Northeast Ohio! 4 Hershey Children s Garden Affiliate Club Container Gardens Project Summer 2014 This year s theme will be A Child s Garden of Memories. We would love for any affiliate club participating to be inspired by the magic and fun of childhood. Whether that includes a toy, a game or a specific activity is up to your creative minds. You can decorate your container, and you may even choose a unique item to use as a planter. Some key guidelines are below to make the process as smooth as possible. There is a lot of flexibility this year, as far as specific container themes, but also in containers and locations. We can you find a perfect home for it in Hershey Children s Garden. Step 1. Pick out a theme for your specific container (always good to have a backup in case another group has already reserved something similar). Step 2. Pick a container/location from the below options (have a backup in case another group has already reserved the one you have an eye on) or have an idea of one your Club will provide. Step 3. Call or Kathryn Clusman, Hershey Children s Garden Manager, to reserve your spot and let her know your fabulous idea! This should be done no later than May 1, but it is first-come, first-served, so the earlier the better! The following information should be given: Affiliate Club name, theme or ideas, main contact person with contact information, preferred planting day and title for your container (optional, but a nice touch). Step 4. Collect your plant selection and plant your container. The containers are always planted the weekend before Memorial Day. You can plant during any of the following days and times: Friday, May 23 (10 am 4 pm), Saturday, May 24 (10 am - 4 pm), and Sunday, May 25 (12 pm 4 pm). Please reserve a time in advance Step 5.Watch your container grow and delight children and adults all summer long! Container/location options: 1. Four 22 (inside top diameter) x (height) 20- inch cement containers placed just outside Hershey Children s Garden Gates. Two containers are in full sun and two in part 4 feet are 2. Three 18x16-inch cement containers between benches in the main fountain court. One container is in full sun and one in afternoon 5 feet are 3. One 17x16-inch plastic terra cotta container placed near the entrance to the woodland path. The container is in part sun. Strong vertical elements no taller than 4 feet are 4. Three 13x9-inch baskets hanging from the edge of the tree house. The baskets are in part to full sun. Strong vertical elements no taller than 14 inches are 5. One 22x17-inch half wine barrel spotted in the bird blind. The container is in part to full 4 feet are suggested, but there is room for growing vines. 6. One 20x18-inch plastic terra cotta container at the intersection of the berry patch, vegetable garden and bird blind paths. The container is in full sun. Strong vertical elements no taller than 4 feet are 7. One 17x17-inch chocolate brown plastic container placed just outside the maze across from the herb garden. The container is in full sun. Strong vertical elements no taller than 4 feet are 8. One 11x16-inch blue fiberglass urn, one 11x11-inch red fiberglass container and one 8x8-inch yellow fiberglass container placed at the bottom of the tree house stairs. The containers are in part to full sun. Strong

5 vertical elements no taller than 4 feet are 9. One 17x17, one 14x12 and one 12x12-inch plastic terra cotta container next to the prairie play house. The containers are in full sun. Vertical elements no taller than three feet are 10. One 16x14-inch terra cotta container in the tree house. The container is in part to full shade. Vertical elements no taller 3 feet are 11. Three 12x10-inch green plastic containers on either side of the path at the base of the tree house ramp. The containers are in full shade. Strong vertical elements no taller than 2 feet are Just a reminder, we provider the containers, soil, plant care and Affiliate Club identification. You provide the creative ideas, plants and décor.
