3 Lila Waldman, President Spring is here. We ve had fresh asparagus and I ve made rhubarb crisp. Our tomato, pepper, and marigold plants are looking good, waiting to be planted. Potatoes, lettuce, arugula, and spinach seeds are already in the ground. I m enjoying the pretty tulips and daffodils outside my office window as I write this. Master Gardeners worked at the Portage library and museum on Earth Day, April 22nd, along with about 60 volunteers throughout the city. After our April 26th business meeting, Liz Meils, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protect, Plant Industry Bureau, gave an interesting presentation on how nurseries and greenhouses are inspected in the state. Our May meeting will be the annual plant sale on May 14th and assisting 4-Hers with container planting at Link s greenhouse on May 17th. Your help is needed at both events; contact Leah Stark to volunteer. The June meeting will be a gardening field trip to Madison on June 28th. We will leave Portage s Market Square at 8:00 a.m. and return at about 5:30 p.m. In the morning we will tour and shop at The Flower Factory, then continue to the UW Research station for a tour and lunch. In the afternoon we will visit the gardens at Epic Systems. The cost is $20 for Columbia County Master Gardeners and $35 for non-members, lunch included. CCMGVs must submit payment for themselves and their guests by May 15th. Make checks payable to Columbia County Master Gardeners and submit to either George or Lila. After May 15th, this opportunity will be offered to other gardeners and associations. The Columbia County Fair will be July 27th- 31st. Volunteers are needed to help set up and staff the booth in the Bidwell Building. Contact George or Lila to sign up. See signup list on next page for dates and times still needed. The fair planning committee will be determining the booth theme this month. Page 3

5 MGV Plant Sale Saturday, May 14 8:00 am -12:00 pm Tractor Supply in Portage We need your HELP, and we NEED PLANTS! If you have any plants that you are looking to divide or get rid of, we would gladly take them for our sale. Annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, veggies...whatever you have! Tractor Supply Company is allowing us to bring our items the Friday night before (4:00-6:00), so if you can't make it to the sale but still have plants to donate, please bring them on Friday. If you don't have time to pot your plants, please put them in a bag or box with the correct name and/or description. Sun, shade, etc. We also need more volunteers. Right now 8 people have signed up to work on Saturday, but we could always use a few more, even if it is for just a few hours. Please let me know if you are able to help out. Thanks, Leah Stark leahlynn3@yahoo.com, after 3:30 or leave a message A note from Carol Ziehmke: I have flats of plants at my house that Jean Damm and Donna McElroy purchased at the Amish Tri-County Auction for our sale on Saturday. Plants purchased are tomatoes, peppers, impatiens, alyssum, dianthus, marigolds and spikes. I need help transporting the plants to the sale. I live in Pardeeville by Chandler Park. If you can help just give me a call or me at carol@ziehmke.com. I will be able to work at the sale early to help set up and later in the morning to clean up. Page 5

7 Garlic Mustard Have you seen this invasive weed on your property? If so, pull, pull, pull!!! Refer to the A Garlic Mustard factsheet for help in identifying and controlling this weed. One of the real challenges is that the seeds can lie in the ground and be viable for about seven years, so you have to be more persistent than the weed itself. It is most effective to pull or cut the stem from the root prior to flowering, but be assured it is already beginning to flower in our area. Brady Holbach Page 7
8 Emerald Ash Borer Now is the best time to protect your ash trees from Emerald Ash Borer. Trees are waking up and taking in large amounts of water and nutrients, which will help them to move the protective chemicals up into the tree canopy. We have had confirmed sightings in Harmony Grove, near Lodi; in the city of Portage; and west of Portage in the Lewiston Township. Therefore the insects are here and they will be visiting an ash tree near you (if they are not already there). To find a Certified Arborist to do tree injections or to treat your trees, check out the Wisconsin Certified Arborist Association website for a list of certified professionals. You may treat your own trees by purchasing the correct active ingredients to control EAB, and then follow the directions on the label. Here is a link to the UW-Extension Document XHT1181 Homeowner Guide to Emerald Ash Borer Insecticide Treatments. Homeowner_Guide_to_EAB_Insecticide_Treatments.pdf. Another helpful document is XHT1215 Is My Ash Tree Worth Treating for Emerald Ash Borer? Is_My_Ash_Tree_Worth_Treating_for_Emerald_Ash_Borer.pdf Signs of an emerald ash borer infestation: Sparse leaves or branches in upper part of tree Vertical splits in the bark Winding S-shaped tunnels under the bark, often visible within vertical bark splits D-shaped exit holes about 1/8 inch wide New sprouts on the lower trunk or lower branches Increased woodpecker activity Leaf feeding damage Adult EAB on leaf Page 8
