9 Avenues run like green veins through cities and landscapes. They characterise a countryside and for both people and animals they enrich lives. On hot and sunny days, they provide shade and create a microclimate by their foliage canopies. They become an important habitat for many animals and other plants. Avenue trees absorb noise from traffic and filter dust and pollution from the air, producing oxygen. Particularly in cities, trees effectively contribute to the people s well-being. They provide shade, absorb dust and above all they sustainably improve the microclimate of their environment. Parks turn into little oasis among the city: they invite us to stay and to slow down. 13 Small plants, plants with compact crowns and drought-resistant trees alongside roads are becoming increasingly significant in town-planning nowadays. The climatic and local factors of town centres have altered considerably as the result of dense development. Extreme weather is more common and long periods of drought are more frequent nowadays. Town-planning problems are playing a continually more important role: plant beds are becoming smaller and planted locations are more confined. It is also becoming continually more difficult to ensure proper care because the local authorities must cut down on their personnel in order to make savings. Factors like frost-resistance, salt tolerance and the ph value must also be considered. Trees that can satisfy these conditions are in demand for enabling the planting of living greenery in town centres to contiue. The following examples are suitable choices for this purpose: an assortment of Acer rubrum, Quercus cerris, Magnolia kobus, or assortment of Gleditsia triacanthos, Fraxinus ornus, Fraxinus americana Skyline or Ginkgo biloba Fastigiata Blagon. 14 There is a saying that one cannot plant an old tree but that is not true at all because the Romans were already planting large trees ages ago! It is much easier nowadays to plant old trees by means of modern technology. The Lappen Tree Nursery has specialized in cultivating very large trees among other things. We can offer a splendid assortment of trees that are regularly selected, transplanted and pruned. A typical specimen s trunk can have a circumference of up to 1.20 m, or it can be a solitary tree or a multi-stem specimen with an overall height of up to 12 m! Trees often do not grow older than 30 years in towns on account of restructuring measures, roadbuilding works, subterranean infrastructure (e.g., sewers and conduits) and many other reasons! Most of these trees could grow much older otherwise but one is prevented from appreciating their full splendour. Therefore, many good reasons exist for planting a large tree whenever one would like to replace a tree that is missing on an existing avenue or in a park. It is interesting to plant a LARGE tree on many projects: especially when most of the buildings are high and one would like to create a harmonious relationship between the tree and concrete. However, the artistic characteristics only become evident after the tree has reached a certain age. Most of this evolution has taken place in the Tree Nursery already. You do not need to train the tree any longer because it has already reached maturity and therefore requires less care than a younger tree.
