2 History Lorenz von Ehren. The nursery. Established Since the foundation of the company in 1865, the Lorenz von Ehren nursery has been owned by the family. Now in the fifth generation, Bernhard von Ehren, Managing Partner, is responsible for the fortunes of the company. He has been supported in this role since 2007 by Managing Director Konrad Parloh. 10

3 History A little tree nursery history. Times have moved on since A lot has changed. But the high demand for the quality of our plants has remained consistent throughout. Founded in 1865 in Hamburg-Nienstedten, from early on the Lorenz von Ehren nursery was known far and wide for its large and special plants. Customers across Europe, including royal houses in Prussia, Denmark and England and even the Tsar s court in Russia, knew they could rely on our quality. 11

4 History The nursery developed splendidly and the business flourished. But its history also includes difficult times. Two world wars had to be weathered and the consequent rebuilding had to be done. However, the nursery recovered quickly from these knocks so much so that within a few years the nursery had outgrown the site in Nienstedten. The transfer of the production of topiary and evergreens to Ammerland was the solution. This branch in Bad Zwischenahn was founded in 1965, and topiary production remains our specialist activity here. In 1993 we relocated our headquarters to the south of Hamburg, giving us even greater space, and greater opportunities. 12

5 History Our entire tree nursery production area has now expanded to around 550 hectares, and we offer the complete range: from large trees to hedging, from the exclusive solitary low branching specimen to high clear stemmed trees, and from bonsai to rose bushes. We also grow a number of rare trees. Our name stands for tradition and progress. Expertise gained over the decades, the implementation of modern tree nursery technology and above all our experienced, well-trained team of employees, all these factors guarantee our consistently high quality. 13

7 Production The best conditions for plants, the environment and your projects Plants for your gardens, parks and other projects. On approximately 550 hectares in Hamburg and at our branch in Bad Zwischenahn, we produce plants in a variety of shapes and sizes for all your projects. 15

8 Production The different soil types and climatic conditions at our nursery sites determines our production programme. In Hamburg we grow primarily avenue trees, large trees, fruit trees and shrubs, but also rare specimens, large shrubs, multi-stems, trees with unusual shapes and our selected range of trees for cities. In Bad Zwischenahn, our emphasis is on evergreens and traditional and innovatively cut topiary trees and shrubs. 16

11 Production High requirements. Plants are demanding. They all have high requirements when it comes to pruning and care. The Lorenz von Ehren team are also specialists in land management. We cultivate special plants for you with a great deal of expertise, and modern technology. We regularly give our soils one or two years to recuperate, this involves applications of green manure, cow dung and rest. Losses in top soil are carefully counterbalanced. During the cultivation phase our grounds are reseeded to prevent possible soil erosion and to actively foster soil life and to improve the microclimate. 19

12 Production Protect the environment. Our environment is important to us. That s why we use soil and water resources with great care. An economical drip irrigation ensures that our plants are given only as much water as they need. We use as little fertilizer as possible. We determine need by regular soil sampling. We protect our plants only in the event of acute dangers, and take into account ecological and biological factors. All this allows our plants to grow well and strong over the years, and so you can be assured that our plants will be in the best condition to make their contribution towards protecting the environment in their new location. There is a great deal of ornithological activity in our fields, which we foster through the use of nest boxes. The numerous birds help us to protect our plants against pests. 20

15 Production But it is not just birds that enjoy the exceptional living conditions in our fields, we have rabbits, and some very important small creatures including bees. Our healthy honey bee colonies are good indicators of our environmentally-friendly production. The bees also provide us with our special tree nursery honey. Our thinking is holistic and conservation conscious. That s why we use environmentally neutral products such as jute, wire and tape in our packaging materials, and why we use mechanical methods for soil cultivation and work with low-emission technology. 23

16 Production Large trees. You get time with us. The time that is needed to let trees grow. Are you looking for a climbing tree for your children or grandchildren, or a fruit tree that s already bearing a lot of fruit, or simply a tree that has already developed its own individual character? Use this opportunity to look for trees on our grounds that have already reached a stately size. 24

17 Production A tree arrives at the Lorenz von Ehren nursery when it is between five to eight years old. It is transplanted, pruned, maintained and nurtured at our nursery until it is at least ten years old. Only from this age is it sold and transferred to a new location. Our largest and oldest avenue and park trees are up to 80 years old, but there are also up to 200-year-old solitary specimens in our grounds and these can still be transplanted thanks to our regime of regular transplanting. 25

They create wellbeing, improve the microclimate, offer a habitat for many creatures, absorb CO 2 filter fine dust particles, produce oxygen, and thereby increase our quality of life. That s why we ask ourselves again and again how we can make our production and logistics even more environmentally friendly. It is for this reason that we have joined and been certified by Hamburg s Ökoprofit environmental programme. We optimise deliveries and transport roadways, and where possible we work together with partners to use rail for long distance transport. 27

20 Responsibility In order to maintain biological diversity, we offer a comprehensive range of local trees with certification by ZgG, which guarantees complete traceability from seed harvest to production through to sale. 21 Responsibility Investment in the future. Well-trained young people are our future. We know this, so the Lorenz von Ehren company offers continuous internships for school pupils and students, plus apprenticeships in three occupational areas: the nursery gardener, the wholesale and foreign trader, and the agricultural and construction machine mechanic. Furthermore, we are actively involved in nationwide campaign days and work in close co-operation with other companies to ensure all our apprentices receive a comprehensive training and education. 29
