Comprising two buildings; one with a rich history and poignant architectural style, the other, a modern interpretation informed by this legacy. 14 Netherhall Gardens perfectly represents the character of the neighbourhood. Otto Schiff headed the Jewish Refugee Committee responsible for aiding the escape of Jews from Germany and Austria. Shunning public acclaim and characterised by a quiet discretion, it was only after his death that Schiff received widespread recognition for his work. The Otto Schiff Housing Association was created in 1984 to pay tribute to his admirable legacy, originally operating as part of the Central British Fund, the association dates back to Using funds to provide welfare for elderly Jewish refugees, the first property they settled in was 14 Netherhall Gardens, now known as Otto Schiff House. Otto Schiff House boasts many of the features that help make the area so charming. A fine example of nineteenth century architecture, Neo-Gothic and Classic Italianate styles seamlessly merge together to provide an unmistakable Hampstead feel. To ensure this beauty stands the test of time, Otto Schiff House, built in 1885, joins the other buildings surrounding it in being a part of the Fitzjohns Netherhall Conservation Area. The second building, Otto Schiff Mansions, is an elegant interpretation of a mansion building and sits proudly at 14 Netherhall Gardens in homage to the late Victorian red brick building. Originally conceived by award-winning architects Squire & Partners and executed by MR Partnership, it is a modern example of the traditional forms, enriched by contemporary detailing. Both buildings remain considerate towards the traditions of Hampstead and the conservation area and have been designed to the highest of standards and specification. In terms of the Fitzjohns Netherhall Conservation Area, this relates to the layers of 18th, 19th and 20th century houses, beautiful green space, public squares and cul-de-sacs found on the southern slopes of Hampstead Village between Rosslyn Hill and Finchley Road. Long synonymous with high art and traditionally inhabited by cultured and artistic circles the area is as characterful and interesting as the people who have called it home. From John Keats and Sigmund Freud to Piet Mondrian and George Orwell, some of the most forward-thinking individuals of the last century have settled here. The positive influence of his work reflects the surroundings in which he created it. Alternatively the Northern Line from Hampstead and Belsize Park stations crosses London from North to South.
