1 The following are critical documents for the installation of Lumacurve LED Signs. These documents include the following: 1) Knowing your circuits 1) Regulator and Circuit Review Record 2) LED Electrical Installation Record These documents were developed to help ensure the smooth and successful installation of Lumacurve LED equipment. We strongly recommend that these forms are filled out at the time of installation (one Regulator and Circuit Review Record per regulator/circuit associated with LED sign installation, and one LED Electrical Installation Record per sign or upgrade kit installed). These documents serve as the basis for knowing that the installation was completed properly. Should any problems arise during or following installation, it is important that the maintenance department have these documents filled out and available when contacting Lumacurve for technical support. This will guarantee that we're able to provide support to work through any issues efficiently. 2 Knowing Your Circuits Healthy circuits are necessary to the proper functioning of signs. Just as a sign cannot be expected to work if it is receiving no power, it cannot be expected to work properly if it is receiving insufficient power. Therefore, it is essential that circuit issues be identified and addressed prior to the installation of Lumacurve equipment. What the FAA Has to Say In their Maintenance of Airport Visual Aid Facilities Advisory Circular (150/ B), the FAA states that Performing regular preventative maintenance checks on airfield lighting circuits is absolutely necessary for reliable operation of the system. ( ) The FAA recommends: Performing insulation resistance tests on all airfield circuits on a monthly basis (minimum) Documenting test results, making note of special conditions (ie: moisture, weather, etc), failure locations, and causes when found. Addressing problem locations as they are identified The FAA suggests: Circuit Length in Feet Suggested minimum resistance to ground in megohms 10,000 or less 50 10,000 to 20, ,000 or more 30 The FAA notes: The insulation resistance that is required for new installations will have a great effect on the ability of the maintenance staff to maintain the series lighting circuits after installation and acceptance. Meggering Megger testing is a non-destructive way of testing wire insulation. It reveals if the insulation has been injured in any way to cause a short circuit when normal power is applied. The initial circuit reading should be taken at the vault. If the results indicate injured insulation, further testing is required to determine where the damage is concentrated. Often, replacing a portion or portions of the circuit is all that is required to bring the circuit to the required standard. Sometimes, the damage is extensive enough that it should be replaced in its entirety to ensure proper functioning of fixtures.

3 Preparing for a Lumacurve Installation Lumacurve suggests meggering circuits well ahead of the installation of our signs. If problems with a circuit are identified, we recommend that these be addressed prior to our equipment being installed. If the circuit issues are not addressed ahead of time, it is essential that extra time is scheduled during and after installation to monitor the signs and address any issues that may result. It s About Safety It s important to remember that circuit monitoring and maintenance is about more than the proper functioning of fixtures. It is about safety. When lighting fixtures aren t working properly, an airfield is a more dangerous place for all: contractors, airfield maintenance, pilots, and passengers. Poorly functioning circuits indicate major losses to ground, meaning that individuals working in the field are more in danger of being electrocuted. Extreme caution should be exercised at all times!
