2 Basic Safety training to be used in addition with other sources EMERGENCY NUMBER FOR ROYAL HALLAMSHIRE HOSPITAL 2222 Laboratory coats, gloves and eye protection (if appropriate) must be worn when carrying out laboratory work. You must comply with COSHH forms, SOP s and risk assessments for any procedure you are doing. Training must be given whenever you use a piece of equipment or carry out a procedure for the first time. Normal working hours are between 07:30 and 18:00, Monday to Friday. To work outside these hours you must attend an Out of Hours course and get prior permission. Students are not permitted to work out of hours OR without supervision. IF IN DOUBT..ASK. Infection and Immunity technical team Technical team leader Yvonne Stephenson Katie Cooke Fiona Morrow Dr. Linda Kay Vanessa Singleton Janine Phipps Ben Harvey Jonathan Kilby
3 Laboratory Good laboratory practice must be adhered to at all times Laboratory coats and gloves must be worn at all times when working in the laboratory. When moving from one lab to another you are only allowed to wear ONE glove. This leaves one hand free to open doors. Laboratory coats can be laundered. There is a bin in LU122 where you can put these. It usually takes 1-2 weeks for them to return. Please label your coat clearly. You must read the relevant COSHH forms and any SOP s and risk assessments for your work., These can be accessed through the following link COSHH forms should include instructions on how to dispose of chemical waste. Waste disposal There are several types of bin available for waste disposal. Please use the appropriate bin for your waste. Please complete on-line safety services training if time allows at Cardboard boxes Black refuse sacks Collapse down and put by the back lifts. General waste e.g. Paper towels and some packaging. Do not put gloves in these bins. Orange plastic bags Cardboard clinical waste boxes Biohazard waste that will not puncture the bag e.g. tissue culture flasks, centrifuge tubes, gloves etc. If you think that it will damage the bag do not put it in. Biohazard waste that could puncture a bag e.g. Pipette tips, strippettes (serological pipettes) PLEASE DO NOT OVERFILL THE BOXES PLEASE LAY THE STRIPETTES FLAT PLEASE SEAL UP AND PUT A RED TAG ON WHEN FULL Sharps bins Brown paper bags Yellow plastic omniums GMO waste For things like needles, glass ampoules etc. For glass. Please ensure that anything that is put in here is free of biological and chemical hazards. For tissue waste. All GMO waste must be inactivated prior to leaving the site.
4 In the case of a fire If you are going to be here for more than a few weeks it is mandatory for you to attend a hospital fire lecture. This should be attended once a year. There are fire extinguishers around the department but you are advised to use these only if you are trained to do so and the fire is small. If you discover a fire Raise the alarm within the building by breaking one the of the manual call points. Dial 2222 and notify the control centre of the details of the incident. Evacuate to the designated location. The hospital has two tier system for fire and the building is divided into 2 hour compartments: Continuous alarm This means there is a fire in your area.. The exact location should be displayed on the repeater panels located by the fire exits. Stop what you are doing immediately, switch off any equipment if it safe for you to do so and evacuate to the designated meeting point. Leave by the nearest clear exit ensuring that doors are closed behind you. Do not use lifts, if you are in a lift when the alarm sounds it will go to B or C floor. The doors will open for 20 seconds to allow you to leave the lift but then will not open after that. Re-enter the department only when the all clear has been given. Intermittent alarm This means that an alarm has been activated in an area either above, below or to the side of our department Be prepared to evacuate. Please note the fire alarm is tested every Friday morning. In the case of an accident All accidents must be reported. Please ask a member of technical staff or first aider to help you complete a form. The paperwork must be completed and forwarded to safety services within 24 hours of the incident. If medical assistance is required call the emergency number In event of activiation of oxygen depletion alarm In laboratories where there are gas cylinders and liquid nitrogen vessels, oxygen sensors are fitted. Once the level of oxygen goes below 18% an alarm will sound. Upon activation of one of these please vacate the laboratory immediately and contact the named person on the alarm panel (usually located near the entrance to the laboratory)
5 Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) GLP should be observed in laboratories at all times as a minimum standard. No eating or drinking in any laboratory. Wear a lab coat and appropriate safety wear (see COSHH information) No pipetting by mouth (use a pipettor or a hand dispenser). Clearly label all bottles and containers with name, substance, date, disposal date and hazard(s). Keep lids on reagents. Store chemicals appropriately. All Winchesters containing chemicals (e.g. acids, solvents etc.) must be transported in a Winchester carrier. Check fume cupboard is working before use. Acids should always be added to water, (never the reverse) when mixing. Clean up all spillages immediately (see COSHH information). Keep the laboratory clean, tidy and safe for others (e.g. cleaners) to enter. All waste must be disposed of according to the waste assessment. COSHH forms should state how to dispose of waste Acids and alkalis should be neutralised (to ph 6-8) before being flushed down drains with copious amounts of water (see COSHH/waste assessment). Waste solvents (e.g. alcohol etc.) must be disposed of in particular drums (see COSHH/waste assessment). Wash hands after use and before eating. If in any doubt at all consult your academic supervisor and/or appropriate member of technical staff before proceeding.
