3 Integrated Safety Management

4 1. General rules Inform yourself about potential dangers you might deal with. Think about what to do in case something goes wrong.

5 Eating, drinking in the labs is forbidden.

6 Alcohol drinking and smoking in the labs and offices is forbidden.

7 Close windows, lock labs and rooms if nobody is inside!

8 A collection of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) including also information on risk (R) and safety (S) is available in room 414 (A. Setzer).

9 Take a look at the packing, dangerous compounds are marked by symbols.

10 Dangerous compounds must be signed to prevent mistaken.

11 Avoid skin and eyes contact with chemicals, use personal protective equipment (PPE).

12 Use the fume hood! After using the fume hood, clean the place. It is no storage room.

13 Recycle organic solvents black containers Acids, bases, other inorganic chemicals in white plastic containers.

14 After finishing your work, clean and make the space free.

15 If something is damaged/destroyed, inform immediately the responsible people or someone who can help to fix the problem.

16 2. Fire prevention Behave appropriately to prevent fire and damage! Persons using devices/instruments: stay strictly to use specifications. Defects in fire protection must be notified to the person responsible for security (P. Lorenz) or the "Dekanatsrat" (M. Schaefer). No smoking in every lab, seminar room, lecture hall etc.

17 Running Coffee machines is only allowed in lounges and bureaus, nowhere else. Flammables should only be stored at an amount needed for one work day in the respective lab or work rooms.

18 In Case of Fire or Smoke The building doors can be closed but not locked.

19 Escape Ways Don't put anything that can block the escape way or areas necessary for rescuing marked in the "Flucht- und Rettungsplan".

20 Signs of the escape ways must not be covered.

22 Every person who has no responsibilities in case of fire must leave the building and go to the 'Stellplatz' for a presence count!

23 Fire Report Press the fire alert button. The alert is forwarded to a central technical department. Another alert is induced by smoke sensors.

24 Fire Extinguishers Use the 'Rettungsplan to find them. Appropriate to extinguish small fires. They must not be covered!

25 Alert Signals Fire alert takes place by sound of hooters.

26 Behavior in case of fire 1. Don t panic 3. In case of alert, call the dispatcher Dispatcher: (0341) Rescue life 4. In case of fire without alert, inform the fire department/dispatcher Fire Department: (0) 112

27 3. Compressed Gas cylinders Never store and use them lying on the floor.

28 Avoid storage near to heat sources. Don't heat gas cylinders.

29 Oxygen cylinders must be stored 6 m from combustible materials or flammable gas containers. O 2 6 m

30 Fasten cylinders securely while in storage.

31 Use the valve protection cap when moving a cylinder.

32 Use a suitable hand truck or dolly for transporting cylinders.

33 Before removing a regulator, close the valve and release the gas from the regulator.

34 4. Electrical equipment Check the electrical insulation of pipes, sockets etc. before starting the experiment.

35 The assembly or modification of electrical circuits must always be done with the power off. Set up the circuits clearly. Discontinue the current flow immediately in electrical accidents.

36 Every electric shock victim is considered to be seriously injured and has to be provided appropriate medical assistance. Testing of electrical devices (deadlines: 1 year, half a year)

37 5. Laser Safety Instructions 1. Scope minimization principle: From simple screening oneself up to a complete body protection measures Keep the course of the laser ray as short and compact as possible Optical equipment should be fastened carefully

38 At the point of impingement of the beam make sure it will not cause any harm (absorption, diffuse reflection) To have the laser beam above or underneath the eyes would best answer the safety purpose for the eyes No optical axis in direction to the window

39 Furniture of the room, windows, floors should reflect the laser beam diffusely Same goes for clothing, watches, tools etc. For example, use black lacquer spray for blackening

40 2. Mode of operation Even when already wearing protection glasses: do not look into the laser ray Use only the protection goggles that have been produced for the used laser (wave-length, attenuation, producer) Goggles for laser adjustment should be used up to 10 W only

41 Eye damage - what to do, whom to call?

42 If one of your eyes got into contact with a laser ray, it can be assumed that there was caused serious damage. An eye specialist should do a "Fluoreszenzangiographie". The eye clinic of the Leipzig University is able to do such a checkup. Ambulance phone: (0341) (every day 7:15 am - 12:00 am, laser checkup from 1:30 pm - 2:15 pm.)
