(949) bis.mitra@fluor.com President s message By Jesus Moncayo, Section President Here I am on Sunday night thinking about what to write to all of you and the first thing that comes to my mind is what are we Engineers doing to inherit to our daughters and sons the passion for Engineering, Science and Technology? Part of the answer to this question I founded on FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). FIRST is a non profit association which mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. FIRST in conjunction with the LEGO Group created the FIRST LEGO League program which engages children in playful and meaningful learning while helping them discover the fun in science and technology. FLL inspires kids to research, build and experiment and by doing so, they live the entire process of creating ideas, solving problems, and overcoming obstacles, while gaining confidence in their abilities to positively use technology ISA, FIRST, and the Automation Federation have established an alliance to promote the importance of science, technology, engineering and math education for students in kindergarten through high school. The other part of the answer is US. The same way we coach our kids sports teams; we can couch our kids in the fun and adventure of discovering how things work and how we can find solutions to challenges. My family is getting ready to form a team and participate in this year s FLL competition. Get involved, it is in your hands to plant the seed of Engineering for our future generations! GFC300 - DUAL CHANNEL FLOW COMPUTER FOR LIQUIDS, GASES AND STEAM GFC300 can be ordered as a single, two independent or a dual flow computer. It can very accurately measure volume, compensated volume and mass of liquids and gases. Or volume and mass of steam, saturated or superheated, in a very large ranges of pressures and temperatures. GFC300 calculates density and compressibility factors with a very high accuracy. Each channel has one flow input that accepts pulses with 24VDC / 20 ma power for the pulse sensor and 4-20 ma loop power flow signal. 30 points linearization for each pulse input can significantly improve the flow meters performances. Flow meter calibration tables can be entered there. Each channel has one 4-20 ma loop power input for temperature or density and one for pressure with a typical error of 0.01% full scale for each. The isolated analog output of each channel can be ordered as 4-20 ma loop power, 0-5V or 0-10V. It can be programmed to represent rate, rate A+B, pressure or temperature. The isolated pulse output of each channel is sinking open drain 100V / 100 ma and can represent total, total A B or total A+B, producing pulses of frequencies up to 10kHz. Each channel has also one relay for 250VAC / 5 A with programmable hysteresis for rate, rate A+B, pressure or temperature Both flow rates are seven digit, totals are eight digit. There are separate units for flow rate and total for each channel. Many volume and mass units are listed in special menus. Flow rate and total for each channel have independent programmable decimal places. GFC300 has many preset liquids, gases and temperature transmitters which simplifies its programming. Power can be ordered as VAC, or 12VDC or 24 VDC, all with high isolation, surge, reverse polarity, under-voltage, over-current and short circuit protection. GFC300 has a bright transmissive color graphic display with a white back-light and easy to use scroll drop list menus. Fully compliant, programmable RS485, 1/8 load, MODBUS RTU for baud rates up to makes GFC300 highly network-able. Multilevel menus, the first of which can be locked make programming easy, simple and protected. Size is DIN 72 x144 mm panel mount, weight is 0.45 kg (1.0 lb). All software options can be enabled on the field with passwords. G Instruments - (858) , Fax (858) sales@ginstruments.com CORPORATION JAMESBURY NELES Instrumentation Work Smarter... 10 The Communication Advantage by Paul Bodeau, Standards and Practices Chair, ISA Los Angeles Section To perform business functions everyone speaks, listens, and writes almost every day of their lives. Yet most of us take these important skills for granted. As engineers, technicians, salesmen, and managers, we tend to emphasize technical and mathematical skills more than our communication skills. This raises an important question that we, as individuals, need to consider. Given the volatility of the current economic condition and the uncertainty of jobs in general, can we be truly effective in our work, if we are poor listeners, speakers, and writers? We must possess a range of business communication skills if we are to professionally compete. We need ISA Central California Section CenCal programs Unless otherwise noted, all are at Petroleum Club Sky Bar California Ave 12th Floor in Bakersfield. To comply with new NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) limits for selenium, Emerson s Rosemount Analytical Wireless was chosen due to the long distance telemetry (about one-half mile) requirement and the known effectiveness of ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) to monitor the reduction state of the wastewater within the immersed organic substrate beds. The Emerson wireless solution includes 24 each 6081-P wireless ph/orp transmitters, 24 each Model 396P ORP sensors, and one Smart Wireless 1420 Gateway. Continued to page 14 This presentation will provide the audience with an overview of which wireless works best, by reviewing the available technologies, current application successes, and future technology directions. We will discuss the growth and evolution of radio transmission technologies (narrowband, spread spectrum, cellular, satellite) in the industrial environments, and review the competing protocol standards including 802.x (Bluetooth, ZigBee, WiFi, WiMax), 3G/4G, and various proprietary protocols. The goals and initiatives of the various industrial wireless standards consortiums (including ISA s SP100 & WiHART ) will also be touched on. Seminars will be held on March 1 and 2, from 9am-3:30pm at ioselect Inc., 9835 Carroll Centre Rd., Suite 100, San Diego. There is no cost and lunch is included, however seats are limited. To stay in the game and play at the highest level, we must become powerful communicators. At our May section meeting, we will approach this important and timely topic directly to bring you up to speed in a one hour presentation. Presented by longtime educators and accomplished speakers and writers, Barbara DeNatale and David Allen Foat, Why Not Engineering will co-sponsor this special event. This presentation is entitled: The Effective Speaking Blueprint: How to connect to any audience through focused preparation, inspired delivery, and technological magic. This will be an intensely valuable and unforgettable event. As a bonus, each attendee will receive a copy of The Five Fatal Flaws of Speaking and How to Avoid Them. Register early so you don t miss out on this powerful and career enhancing evening. For next month s newsletter I plan to interview both presenters, Barbara and David.
