2 FROM THE DESK OF FIRE CHIEF ROBERT WILSON Hello and thank you for taking the time to review our departmental statistics for the period ending December 31, This one-year snapshot will allow you to see that our department is being run efficiently and with notable improvements. Our call volume, as you will note, exceeded our 2013 call numbers by 21%. The men and women of the Orange Village Fire Department handled this increased volume with efficiency and with the level of professionalism we are proud to provide our residents. Our public relations efforts increased this year with the addition of a large and wellattended community Halloween Celebration. In coordination with the Mayor and her administrative staff we were able to return this event after decades of hibernation. These public events are important for several reasons. First, they promote a sense of community and provide a great opportunity for families to share time together. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, these events allow our members to educate those that we proudly serve. Using our motto Help Us To Help You we are constantly attempting to educate the residents on fire and EMS related issues. The feedback on our PR efforts has been tremendous and we look forward to another strong year of community presence in Finally, as 2015 takes shape you can be assured that our Officers will be addressing operational issues related to the Pinecrest development and the Lakes of Orange. As Chief, I depend on our Officers to help lead the way in this planning phase. However, I also value the input attained from other members of the department, both veteran and new. 3 RUN VOLUME: Our run volume showed a significant increase from the previous year. In fact, 2014 represented the highest run volume in the department s history. 4 RESPONSE TIME ANALYSIS WE ALWAYS STRIVE TO REDUCE THE TIME IT TAKES FOR OUR DEPARTMENT TO RESPOND TO EMERGENCIES. IN 2014 OUR AVERAGE RESPONSE TIME REMAINED STABLE WITH JUST A 9 SECOND INCREASE. WHILE CONCEPTUAL PLANS ARE BEING REVIEWED FOR THE NEW PINECREST DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION BEGINS IN THE LAKES OF ORANGE DEVELOPMENT, THE OFFICER CORE IS WORKING ON PLANS TO ENSURE ADEQUATE RESPONSE TIMES FOR ANTICIPATED INCREASED RUN VOLUME. 5 11 * % 12 23* % TOTAL RUNS % NOTE THAT TOTAL RUNS ARE SHORT OF OUR VOLUME OF 717 DUE TO CALLS THAT WERE CANCELLED PRIOR TO ARRIVAL AND THUS NO ARRIVAL AND RESPONSE TIME ATTRIBUTED. *PROLONGED RESPONSE TIMES INCLUDE CALLS WHERE THE APPARATUS SHUT DOWN LIGHTS AND SIRENS EN ROUTE, LONG DISTANCE HAZMAT RESPONSES BY OUR TEAM MEMBERS, MUTUAL AID TO DISTANT AREAS (GEAUGA TANKER SHUTTLE) AND WEATHER RELATED DELAYS. 5

6 EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES The Orange Village Fire Department responded to 498 EMS calls in The breakdown on these calls is as follows: EMS calls (excluding accidents with injuries): 461 Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA s) with injuries: 20 Motor Vehicle Accidents without injuries: 14 EMS other 3 TOTAL: 498 6

8 FIRE PREVENTION Our fire prevention efforts continued under the leadership of Assistant Chief Daniel Fritz and Fire Inspector Mel Weisblatt. In 2014 the Orange Village Fire Department completed 98 inspections including: Commercial Hood Inspections Commercial Alarm Inspections Acceptance Tests Annual Fire Prevention Inspections. Our efforts do not stop at the commercial level. The Orange Village Fire Department also conducts Point Of Sale Inspections for all home title transfers. Last year we completed 38 POS Inspections (down From 43 in 2013) which help guarantee that our housing stock is compliant with national standards for the placement of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Approximately 80% of these inspections require a follow up as it is extremely important that the placement of these units is strictly enforced. 8

9 Our Fire Prevention Bureau also is responsible for inspecting all firework displays that take place within our borders. In 2014 these events included: July 4 th celebration at Beechmont Country Club The Salute To Orange Village In 2014 our Fire Prevention Bureau also conducted Fire Education Programs including: 4 Commercial CPR Classes 3 Orange Village CPR Classes 2 Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Scenario Classes 2 Fire Prevention Safety Classes Educational Presence at all Fire Department Public Relations Events (Open House, Halloween etc..) 9

11 PUBLIC RELATIONS FIRE DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE / HEALTH & WELLNESS FAIR In 2014 the OVFD once again hosted this event. Working with members of Village Administration and University Hospitals we were able to provide our residents with a fun and informative day. HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED: Tours of our Fire Trucks Cotton Candy / popcorn Lunch for all attendees (Compliments of University Hospitals) Mini helicopter ride Fire Safety Trailer New Technology exhibits (EMS equipment) Health Screenings (University Hospitals) Fire Prevention information table And much more! We will be hosting this event again this year (Sunday June 7th 2015). Please consider attending and helping us spread the word. 11

13 THE ORANGE VILLAGE HALLOWEEN FUN FEST 2014 Working with Mayor Mulcahy and members of Village Administration, the OVFD proudly hosted this fun event. Some of the firefighters attended these parties when they were little firefighters. After a long hiatus we were happy to bring it back! Firefighters donated their time for set up which included the Haunted Firehouse and general decorating. Below are some pictures from this successful event. 14 MAYOR MULCAHY JUDGES COSTUMES EVERYONE HAD FUN HAUNTED LABORATORY HAUNTED FIREHOUSE 2014 CHRISTMAS AND HANUKKAH PRESENT DELIVERY In 2013 Firefighter / Paramedic Nick Kaminsky suggested that the OVFD deliver holiday presents to children in the community. We thought it was a great idea! In 2014 we continued this effort delivering presents to many homes in the village. Participants dropped off presents at Village Hall and the OVFD responded with lights and sirens (but driving REALLLLY slow) to the homes delivering the gifts with candy canes and gelt. For the Christmas delivery we even convinced Santa to join us (Ok it was Firefighter / Paramedic Rich Koblin but don t tell). 14

OUR TEAM IF THERE IS ONE THING THAT IS AN ABOLUTE IN THE FIRE SERVICE, IT IS THE ADAGE THAT A FIRE DEPARTMENT IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO BRAVELY SERVE. WHETHER IT S A MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON I-271 IN ICY AND DANGEROUS CONDITIONS, A HOUSE FIRE, A MUTUAL AID COMMERCIAL FIRE OR A COMBATIVE EMS PATIENT OUR FIREFIGHTERS CONSTANTLY PROVIDE QUALITY SERVICE WITH COMPASSION AND BRAVERY.
