3 University of Illinois Training: We received a $ credit for training from the University of Illinois to be used for live fire training at the Illinois Fire Service Institute. This training credit was received as a result of our department s donation of surplus self contained breathing apparatus to the Fire Service Institute. Chief s Report Dear Mayor Sexton and Board of Trustees: I am pleased to present the 2012 Annual Report for the Evergreen Park Fire Department. The accomplishments and activities over the past year continue serve as a testament to the dedication and hard work of our personnel. I am proud of our accomplishments, and prouder of our people as we strive to make our village a better and safer place to live and work. We utilized a portion of this credit to conduct one 8 hour live fire training session for our apprentice firefighters to meet their requirement for firefighter certification. The remainder of this credit will be utilized to conduct an additional live fire training session this year. Keep the Wreath Red Our annual Keep the Wreath Red campaign to prevent fires caused by holiday decorations was a success as no fires were experienced during the holiday season. This report chronicles the events of the past year: Walmart Community Foundation Grant: We received a $ grant to purchase Intraosseous Infusion Kits that were placed into service on each of our ambulances. These kits allow our paramedics to administer fluids and medications when a traditional intravenous line cannot be established. Emergency Responses - 1 -

4 Our department responded to 768 fire incidents and 1928 EMS incidents for a total of 2696 calls. These numbers reflect an increase of 95 fire responses and 97 EMS responses over our 2011 totals. While calls for service have increased, total fire losses are down dramatically from Our total estimated fire loss for 2012 was $55, s estimated fire losses were $174, I believe that the decrease in estimated fire losses can be attributed to our residents sound fire prevention practices in their homes, as well as the comprehensive programs conducted by our department s public education division. Additionally, there were no injuries or fatalities due to fire in Our past and future successes are made possible by the strong backing we receive from the Mayor and Board of Trustees; I thank you for your continued support throughout the year. Sincerely, Ronald L. Kleinhaus Fire Chief New Equipment We replaced 2 of our utility pick-up trucks this past year. A 2012 Ford F-350 replaced our 1989 Ford F-250 which was the first pick-up purchased for the fire department, this truck was sold for $ A 2012 Ford F-250 replaced our 1998 GMC 2500, this truck was sold for $ Both of these trucks are equipped with snow plows to assist the public works department in snow removal at village parking lots

5 Our apprentice firefighters participated in live fire training at the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute. Additional training was conducted at the Oak Lawn Fire Department training facility. Division of Training Division Chief Robert Murphy Division Chief Peter Vassios The Division of Training is responsible for the development and implementation of our departments training programs. All fire department training is conducted in accordance with the guidelines established by the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. 10 In May we conducted our 5th annual Kid s Health Fair. This event, co-sponsored by Little Co. of Mary Hospital, brought together community organizations concerned with the health and well being of our children and has become one of the most anticipated events we conduct. 13 Our investigators attend annual training seminars on investigating fires caused by electrical equipment, appliances and flammable liquids. Additionally, our investigators are members of the MABAS Division #21 Cause and Origin Team. This team, made up of investigators from fire departments within our MABAS Division, can be called to assist with major fire investigations throughout our division. This past year our investigators responded to 8 requests for assistance from area fire departments. Our investigators conduct fire cause and origin investigations on all fires, in the event of a suspicious fire, information, photographs and evidence is turned over to the detective division of the Evergreen Park Police for further investigation

14 Division of Support Services Division of Vehicle Maintenance Assistant Chief Corey Hojek The Division of Support Services is responsible for researching, purchasing and maintaining all fire department equipment, protective clothing and supplies. The Division of Vehicle Maintenance is responsible for conducting preventative maintenance and repairs to all fire department apparatus and equipment. Additionally, whenever possible and cost effective, personnel perform minor building maintenance and repairs in and around the fire station. Over the past year the Support Services coordinated the procurement and equipping of our new pick-up trucks

15 Division of Emergency Medical Services Lt. Edward Palenik Our paramedics are licensed by the state of Illinois and work under Standing Medical Orders developed by the South Cook County Emergency Medical Services System located at Ingalls Memorial Hospital. The addition of the 12 lead cardiac monitors continues to be a huge success. We continue to meet or exceed the time frames set by the American Heart Association regarding the identification and transport of these patients to the hospital. In addition to emergency responses our paramedics participate in the following activities throughout the year; Mandated continuing education Community Health Fairs CPR and first aid training for the community Senior Citizens weekly blood pressure screening Area hospital training and meetings

16 Division of Data and Communications Division Chief Thomas Mullally The data and communications division is responsible for maintaining all department radio and computer equipment as well as the equipment utilized in the village emergency operating centers. Our department radio and computer technicians were responsible for the installation of all radio, telephone and computer equipment into our new command van. The federal Communications Commission mandated that all VHF radios become narrow banded by January 1, This narrow banding will allow for additional in the radio spectrum. Our department radio technician completed this re-programming of our department radios at no additional expense

17 Everbridge Emergnency Alert System Village residents who maintain a home telephone through AT&T automatically have their number entered into the emergency alert system, approximately 15,700 land line telephones are preprogrammed to receive the alerts. Emergency Management We continue to work closely with the Cook County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and Illinois Emergency Management Agency on issues pertaining to local emergency management. Additionally, over 600 residents have registered to receive these alerts via e- mail, cellular telephone or pager. The system is maintained by our 911 communications center in Oak Lawn and can be activated for emergencies or community alerts at the direction of village officials. In order to enhance our storm warning capability, an additional outdoor warning siren was installed at 100 th ST. & Central Park Ave. The addition of this siren now provides an outdoor warning siren in each quadrant of the village. Additional sirens are located at: - 89 th St. & California Ave th Pl. & the CNRR Tracks - 94 th St. & Hamlin Ave. Additionally, due to their age, and in order to comply with the FCC narrow banding mandate, the radio controllers in our outdoor warning sirens were replaced

Since it s inception in the 1970 s the MABAS organization has expanded to over 100 divisions, comprised of fire departments throughout the states of Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri and Indiana. In the event of major emergencies, MABAS provides for a systematic response of fire department resources to a stricken community. 24 Fire Department Club Activities Through their annual fundraiser, the firefighter s club purchases equipment for the fire department, supports local charities and organizations and continues to support our military personnel. Over the past year our members have contributed to; Project Wounded Warrior Benefits held for local residents Proceeds from this years fundraiser will be used for improvements at our fire department s training facility. Purchased tools and equipment for the fire department Illinois Fire Chiefs Educational and Research Foundation to fund scholarships for firefighters
