4 Safety Tip Fire Protection I by Gary Pelach There is a very remote chance of having an onboard fire of some sort to deal with in flight. This raises the question of carrying a fire extinguisher and what types are approve and safe in flight. Purchasing a fire extinguisher is an investment in safety you should consider. The FAA does not provide a list of approved extinguishers but does accept hand held Underwriter Labradorite approved models There are three classes of fire extinguishers, Class A is ordinary combustibles, Class B flammable liquids, Class C electrically energized fires. There are three types of extinguishers that cover the three classes; Halon, dry chemical, and CO2. Halon fire extinguishers meet the requirements of the Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) , and Department of Transportation. Their small size and weight allow them to be stored easily and Halon is not very toxic. Dry chemical extinguishers are not a wise choice for the cockpit, it's very corrosive and will eat away at avionics, the powder discharged will stick to windows blocking vision. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) has disadvantages as compared to Halon, to have the same effect as a 3-pound bottle of Halon a CO2 extinguisher would have to weigh 14 pounds and 9% concentration causes a loss of consciousness after a short time if not in a ventilated cabin. Unfortunately, Halon is not in production in industrialized countries due to its effects on ozone but there is a stockpile. The FAA and other organizations are looking for alternatives that don't harm the ozone. These extinguishers are still available, just at a higher price than when Halon was still being produced. Most manufacturers of fire safety products carry Halon extinguishers and may be found in aviation product catalogs.
